I did hear a message about restarting when I turned on the system this morning. As suggested by you all, I looked at the shut down menu and did see the update & restart/shutdown options. I had also looked at the update history to be assured that I was still getting the other updates. I also have an HP system with Intel display drivers- so you all were right on target and very helpful! Thanks much J

Hi cher,

Windows 1809 is still being rolled out. I have it on one of my computers that just downloaded it about a week ago. My one computer has not received it yet. Just be patient and it will come. Are you receiving security updates and accumulative update? If your computer is receiving security updates then it probably is working fine. Look in the update history to see if you have been receiving security updates.

I have never hit the ‘check for updates’ button (as advised) but Microsoft said recently that the update has been pushed to everyone. At one time, I did check that I had a metered connection- but undid that later when I saw that I was not getting the security and virus updates that I needed. In case I missed something, will someone tell me exactly where to go to check any and all settings which might be preventing the update from coming down. When I select the windows update tab in settings, JAWS always reports that my computer is up to date. Thanks for assistance.

Ann,
I think it's worth you talking to the IT department of the college to see if you can access the email via an email client like Outlook, Thunderbird, or Windows Mail. At a minimum, could you access it on a smart phone? WE can brainstorm with you, but this is a good case where it's time to ask the IT people there what security measures they have around the email service and what accommodations can be made for you.

Hi. This afternoon FS sent me a Word.JCF file that they hoped would resolve a problem I’m having with Word 2016 and JAWS 2019. I made the mistake of pasting it over the existing Word.JCF file without first saving that original file. the new .JCF file causes Word to repeat every line. It’s a nightmare.

Can anyone suggest how I restore or retrieve the original Word.JCF file?

Hi Sugar,

Simply having Internet Explorer on your desktop does not mean you're actually opening Internet Explorer on the Desktop.

You have to go into your Internet Options, then tab to the programs tab.

The first option will ask you how you want Internet Explorer to open links. There are three options.

1. Let Internet Explorer decide.
2. Always in Internet Explorer.
3. Always with Internet Explorer on the Desktop.

It's the third option you want.

Then tab to apply then ok and you're done.

If you want to replace that icon on your desktop, assuming you're using Windows 10, you have to go into your start menu and up arrow to all apps.

Once in the app list, press the letter W or arrow down to Windows Accessories and press enter to open the sub-menu. Arrow down to Internet Explorer and press your applications key or shift+F10.Arrow down to More sub-menu, then arrow right and down to open file location.

Once the window pops up, press your applications key or shift+F10 then down arrow to send to sub-menu. activate the sub-menu and arrow down to desktop, create shortcut. Press enter and you'll have the right icon.

Now, I have no idea if it matters what icon for Internet Explorer you use, but hey, what does it hurt. LOL.

Hi,
Don't listen to the crowd seariously, your internet browser is your choice.
Now, we have a large bunch of google chrome fanatics that are always trying
to put down internet explorer.
I E works good enough for me and my internet bank has never had a problem,
unless you use a different browser or PC to log on because the iBank
recognize the original setup, Also the only way to get to J2020 is through
2019, it's a good idea to get your Jaws SMA.
When I open I E it opens to the search bar... And control O is the address
bar, which from a website you are on currently you can jump to another
website by pressing control O and type in the website and press enter.
Alt + A opens your I E favorites list, find a saved website and press enter.

Hi group:

In reading this thread, I'm about to update to Jaws 2019. I have heard from
different people about Chrome and Fire Fox. Which one do you think is
easier to use with Jaws? I'm not tech savvy so I'm trying to find the best

When I open Internet explorer, I have Yahoo as my home page and all I have

browsers simple like that? Thanks for your help.

Noone is trying to put down iE out of spite. The fact is that it's no longer
developed and only receives emergency security patches. That means that the
web is leaving it behind, and has been for quite some time.

For putting that item on the desktop, if you want, there are a few other
methods you can use, too.

Open file explorer to your c drive. A quick way to do this is by typing
windows key + r to open the run dialog and typing "c:"
Press ctrl-e to open the search box (you need to use this one and not the
Cortana search activated by the windows key)
Type "iexplore.exe"
Wait a few seconds. If you have a solid state drive this'll probably be
really quick. When iexplore.exe pops up in the results list, place your
cursor on it, hit the applications key or shift f10, and 'send to" will be
right there. Make sure you really do it for iexplore.exe though and not
iexplore.exe.mui or anything else that might pop up in the results list.

Hi Sugar,

Simply having Internet Explorer on your desktop does not mean you're
actually opening Internet Explorer on the Desktop.

If you want to replace that icon on your desktop, assuming you're using
Windows 10, you have to go into your start menu and up arrow to all apps.

Once in the app list, press the letter W or arrow down to Windows
Accessories and press enter to open the sub-menu. Arrow down to Internet
Explorer and press your applications key or shift+F10.Arrow down to More
sub-menu, then arrow right and down to open file location.

Once the window pops up, press your applications key or shift+F10 then down
arrow to send to sub-menu. activate the sub-menu and arrow down to desktop,
create shortcut. Press enter and you'll have the right icon.

Now, I have no idea if it matters what icon for Internet Explorer you use,
but hey, what does it hurt. LOL.

Hi,
Don't listen to the crowd seariously, your internet browser is your choice.

I'm not tech savvy so I'm trying to find the best
one.
When I open Internet explorer, I have Yahoo as my home page and all I have
to do is hit control O and I can put in the web address. Is any of these
browsers simple like that? Thanks for your help.

LOL.

I also use Internet Explorer, and in fact, have given up using Edge because
of it's various troubles with Jaws. I realize they say they're getting
better and better with Edge, but I simply haven't seen it, and so still rely
on IE.

Having said that, you should make sure that Internet Explorer is set to open
Internet Explorer on the Desktop.

You'll find this setting under Internet Settings in the apps tab.

There will be two options, open Internet explorer, or Internet Explorer on
the Desktop.

The former is a stripped down version of IE, whereas the latter is the full
featured one with menus and such.

Hi. Got a new laptop. Did have a Toshiba satellite pro, almost 5 years and a 1 tb Toshiba  external drive, and was starting to die. So got this new model. A assus vivo book x 540 uar, intel I 7 7 64 bit, 8 gb ram, 500 gb ssd hard disk, running windows 10 home 64 bit 1809.a nice machine, very quiet and very fast, never had a ssd before. Also got a portable Samsung external  500 gb  ssd drive. And have it set up, where I don’t have to enter the password, just click the sign in button, and takes a few seconds to wake, and jaws comes up. Got jaws 2019 home 64 bit, and got a sma, for the next version. And love windows 10. And faster transferring data, it took me about 10 minutes to copy across 50 gb of data, compared to my old machine, would have been 2 or 3 or more hours. And has dolby sound, real great. Uses the real tech and has the 3 usb 3 ports, and the headphone jack on the left, no dvd drive. And it alerts me when I have unplugged the headphone jack. 15.6 screen, with a num lock, and my mom had to put cork dots on the left, right, up and down arrow keys, and had this machine almost a couple of months. A sighted friend, will strip my Toshiba, do a clean install and set it up for his mother. A friend of mine. He is a programmer, and a geek. So, thought I would pop in and say hello. So, my machine’s working great.and also got intel 420 graphics, and the machine use 6 or 8 cores. Very fast.

Marvin.

Ps: so not asking for any help. Have configured windows 10, to how I like it.

And you are doing the folks on this list a disservice by encouraging them to
ignore what has proven to be fact. Next we'll have a bunch of people
scrambling to get use to chrome or firefox when IE becomes unusable, which
it undoubtably will do.

Noone is trying to put down iE out of spite. The fact is that it's no longer
developed and only receives emergency security patches. That means that the
web is leaving it behind, and has been for quite some time.
