Re: Concerning Waterfox and installation

JM Casey

If you don't specifically select the 64-bit version of Firefox, the 32-bit one will be the one that installs.

I read the stuff on the Waterfox page there and it's just baffling, because Firefox at least claims to have a 64-bit version, and indeed, that's what I have installed -- when I access the "about" screen, here's what I get:
65.0.1 (64-bit)

I have had 64-bit Firefox for at least a year.

So, either Mozilla is making a false claim, or Waterfox is distorting the truth somewhat.

Having said all this, I'm still impressed with the speed of Waterfox at this moment.

all i know is when i downloaded version 64 bit it installed the 32 bit version on my windows 64 bit computer.
i was also going by what the waterfox web site says as of jan 2019 that the consumer version of firefox was still 32 bit.

What do you mean by this? Firefox has both a 32 and 64-bit version. I run the 64-bit version of Firefox because I have a 64-bit machine. Are you claiming that the 64-bit version of Firefox does not actually take advantage of 64-bit architecture? That's an honest question because I have never heard such a claim before.

it is going to run faster because it is useing the 64 bit format. not 32 bit like firefox.
other then this both are the same. all the menus and shortcuts are the same.
falso jaws does not pause randomly for about 10 seconds, waiting for the screen to refresh like it does with firefox because it is refreshing the screen faster.

I don’t know if it’s better. It does seem to be running faster than firefox does on my system at the moment. It also apparently can use multi-process architecture like Firefox does now. I believe it is compatible with some of the old add-ons that no longer work in the re-designed Firefox. If you have old add-ons that you want to use, therefore, I think that could be one of the strongest arguments for using this programme, but I personally am not really running any add-ons at the moment, not even noscript, which started to be a pain in the arse to use.

Hi. This afternoon FS sent me a Word.JCF file that they hoped would resolve a problem I’m having with Word 2016 and JAWS 2019. I made the mistake of pasting it over the existing Word.JCF file without first saving that original file. the new .JCF file causes Word to repeat every line. It’s a nightmare.

Can anyone suggest how I restore or retrieve the original Word.JCF file?

Thanks.

Thanks, Mike. I came back from dinner to find not only your posts, but also that FS’s rep had replied. He said to delete the file and the old one will reappear. Well, the file is deleted, but it hasn’t come back even after a PC restart. Even so, Word is back to where it was before I pasted that catastrophic file. This feels like the opposite of that line, “The operation was a success. The dog died.” In this case, the operation failed, but the dog revived. Call me baffled but relieved.

Issues displaying HTML E-mail messages in Windows Live Mail

Victor Gouveia

Hi Folks,

I’m using the latest version of Jaws 2019 and the latest version of Windows Live Mail, and usually, when I read my mail, I use the preview pane, though I read my mail in plain text.

Often though, when I want the message to take me to a website or a link within the message, I’ll switch it to HTML view, but as of 2019, when ever I do this switch to HTML, I can’t get past the first line, and the Jaws message reports zero links in the message, even though I know there are plenty.

I’ve checked my window size, and it’s maximized and I still can’t read my messages.

The same happens when I open the message instead of reading it in the preview pane, I still can’t get past the first line in the message.

This used to happen with 2018, but I just thought this was an issue with my fifteen year-old computer and not Jaws, and it also didn’t happen all the time and occasionally, when I switched windows, the issue would go away.  Now, no matter how many times I switch applications, it doesn’t let me read the message.

Does anyone know if this is a bug in Jaws, or is there a setting I can change that will fix this?

Victor

Yes, I’ve discussed the problem on the list. After a while, JAWS stops being able to read by character, word and line. It works fine in “say all.” Some list members reported having the same issue.

The Word.JCF file has not reappeared in the ENU list, but Word has been working the way it did before I installed FS’s test file.

Ann,
I've been experimenting with the first method you explain last week. Here's my question. Once you perform an action on a misspelled word, the list disappears. Have you found a way of keeping the list intact so you can keep moving down it, or do you need to bring it up each time?

JAWS has some special keys for accessing misspelled words.

1. Pressing alt+shift+l will list misspelled words. To correct a word, press enter on it and use the context menu (applications key?
right click) to list available options.

2. Press insert+z to turn on quick keys, then press 'm' to move to the first misspelled word. To correct the word, press insert+z to turn off quick keys, then use the applications (context) menu to see the list of options. To check for the next word, insert+z again, then 'm'. Remember that insert+z prevents your typing into the document.

I have to bring it up each time. I do like it that the number of misspellings decreases as I go, though.

I would suggest you try not using the preview pane. I have been using WLM for several years and use only HTML for reading emails and never had any security problems and the messages read just fine. I know the preview pane gives you a chance to decide whether you want to open the message, but I find it faster to just go ahead and open if the subject is something I am interested in.

Hi. Got a new laptop. Did have a Toshiba satellite pro, almost 5 years and a 1 tb Toshiba  external drive, and was starting to die. So got this new model. A assus vivo book x 540 uar, intel I 7 7 64 bit, 8 gb ram, 500 gb ssd hard disk, running windows 10 home 64 bit 1809.a nice machine, very quiet and very fast, never had a ssd before. Also got a portable Samsung external  500 gb  ssd drive. And have it set up, where I don’t have to enter the password, just click the sign in button, and takes a few seconds to wake, and jaws comes up. Got jaws 2019 home 64 bit, and got a sma, for the next version. And love windows 10. And faster transferring data, it took me about 10 minutes to copy across 50 gb of data, compared to my old machine, would have been 2 or 3 or more hours. And has dolby sound, real great. Uses the real tech and has the 3 usb 3 ports, and the headphone jack on the left, no dvd drive. And it alerts me when I have unplugged the headphone jack. 15.6 screen, with a num lock, and my mom had to put cork dots on the left, right, up and down arrow keys, and had this machine almost a couple of months. A sighted friend, will strip my Toshiba, do a clean install and set it up for his mother. A friend of mine. He is a programmer, and a geek. So, thought I would pop in and say hello. So, my machine’s working great.and also got intel 420 graphics, and the machine use 6 or 8 cores. Very fast.

Marvin.

Ps: so not asking for any help. Have configured windows 10, to how I like it.

Hi cher,

Windows 1809 is still being rolled out. I have it on one of my computers that just downloaded it about a week ago. My one computer has not received it yet. Just be patient and it will come. Are you receiving security updates and accumulative update? If your computer is receiving security updates then it probably is working fine. Look in the update history to see if you have been receiving security updates.

I have never hit the ‘check for updates’ button (as advised) but Microsoft said recently that the update has been pushed to everyone. At one time, I did check that I had a metered connection- but undid that later when I saw that I was not getting the security and virus updates that I needed. In case I missed something, will someone tell me exactly where to go to check any and all settings which might be preventing the update from coming down. When I select the windows update tab in settings, JAWS always reports that my computer is up to date. Thanks for assistance.

Follow-up: The update today was a cumulative update. Not to worry however, You all have helped me feel comfortable about the 1809 status.

I did hear a message about restarting when I turned on the system this morning. As suggested by you all, I looked at the shut down menu and did see the update & restart/shutdown options. I had also looked at the update history to be assured that I was still getting the other updates. I also have an HP system with Intel display drivers- so you all were right on target and very helpful! Thanks much J

Not with this Outlook 365. Chrome won't even read the email list.

Hi,

I from time to time have to sign into my outlook.com address to check the spam folder, but have no problem with this as long as I do 2 things both of which work just fine for me. First, insure that you are using google chrome as this will give you good results. Second, once you are signed in, press insert Z to disable the virtual pc curser. This should allow you to access the message list as well as the folder list without a problem. HTH.

Indicating that we should use the Light Version (stripped-down version) if we have accessibility needs is a cop-out for Microsoft. The full version should be fully accessible.

Hi Ann:

I guess it's no longer referred to as the "blind and low vision experience". Once you have signed into OWA, pick options, then Outlook version.

Here' a screen shot:
Outlook version
Select the check box below if you want to use the light version of Outlook.
The light version provides a simplified experience for users who have:
Older web browsers
Low bandwidth connections
Accessibility needs

Use the light version
Changes to this setting will take effect the next time you sign in.

Hi,
Don't listen to the crowd seariously, your internet browser is your choice.
Now, we have a large bunch of google chrome fanatics that are always trying to
put down internet explorer.
I E works good enough for me and my internet bank has never had a problem,
unless you use a different browser or PC to log on because the iBank recognize
the original setup,
Also the only way to get to J2020 is through 2019, it's a good idea to get
your Jaws SMA.
When I open I E it opens to the search bar... And control O is the address
bar, which from a website you are on currently you can jump to another website
by pressing control O and type in the website and press enter.
Alt + A opens your I E favorites list, find a saved website and press enter.

HTH,
Jorge

Hi group:

In reading this thread, I'm about to update to Jaws 2019. I have heard from
different people about Chrome and Fire Fox. Which one do you think is easier
to use with Jaws? I'm not tech savvy so I'm trying to find the best one.
When I open Internet explorer, I have Yahoo as my home page and all I have to
do is hit control O and I can put in the web address. Is any of these
browsers simple like that? Thanks for your help.

Window Eyes has not been supported or developed since it became a free
screen reader through Microsoft so it may work with older versions of
IE. But you really should stop using IE and move to a browser that is
being developed and supported.
If you stay with IE, you'll find more and more problems will develop

Ann,
I think it's worth you talking to the IT department of the college to see if you can access the email via an email client like Outlook, Thunderbird, or Windows Mail. At a minimum, could you access it on a smart phone? WE can brainstorm with you, but this is a good case where it's time to ask the IT people there what security measures they have around the email service and what accommodations can be made for you.

I use Chrome, but am not a Chrome fanatic. I actually love IE, but found that it was becoming sluggish and even freezing up on an increasing number of sites, and many sites now will come up with a pop up that says that the site no longer supports IE and certain areas of the site will not work with IE.
