AFAIK, Edge is only for Windows 10, so for those of us who have not gone to
10, we have to use another of the aforementioned browsers.

Hi,
No, JAWS is not the cause.
IE hasn't been supported for years and its no longer being developed.
You are much better off getting rid of IE and
moving to Google Chrome or firefox.
Window Eyes has not been supported or developed
since it became a free screen reader through
Microsoft so it may work with older versions of
IE. But you really should stop using IE and move
to a browser that is being developed and supported.
If you stay with IE, you'll find more and more
problems will develop and eventually it will be unusable.
Mine rarely comes up anymore whether I do a
keystroke or hunt for it using first letter navigation on the desk top.

Robin, thanks for this post. I'd never considered this angle before. I'll try a compact voice to find out if I have the same reaction. Your "sing song" observation is on the money.

I find the premium versions have more inflection, making them sound too sing song. Having used synthesized speech for so many years, the "more natural" sounding voices can get annoying to me and seem to make some words harder to catch.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't recommend turning it off either, since it
notifies you if anything is about to be installed onto your computer. In
other words, it's a nice safe-guard in my opinion, and you can always say
"no" if you don't want the particular item to be installed.

I used to use Eloquence at work for almost 12 years.
I started using AVA at home and really liked her sound so I switched at work and now would not go back to Eloquence mainly because AVA is so easy to use for an eight hour day.

Eloquence might be the best synthesizer for pronouncing words but its also the most robotic and I would prefer not to listen to that for eight hours.
But as is the case with most things, it comes down to user choice.

Yes, you can do this in control panel!

Just type:

User Account Control into the search field of the Control Panel, and tab, and you can arrow down to set it to zero.

I have always done that, and you will not get those messages anymore!

Re: Outlook 2010 Calendar appointments with Jaws 2018

Rebecca Lineberger

I have Windows 10, 1809, the latest version of JAWS, and Office 2010.  I’m using the month view.

I just put in an all day event for February 5, and an appointment, also for February 5.

If my cursor is on February 4, I right arrow and JAWS tells me February 5, one all day event and one appointment.  If I tab once, JAWS reads the all day event.  If I tab once more, it reads the appointment.

Subject: [jaws-users] Outlook 2010 Calendar appointments with Jaws 2018

Greetings

I wonder if anyone has a solution to Jaws skipping appointments in Outlook 2010 where there is also a full day event listed for the same day? I and my admin team list my engagements either as full day events or appointments depending on the type of activity or likely time duration etc. Selecting the date and tabbing across with Jaws will read the full day events but not the appointments listed therein, using the month or week view.

I have spent well-over an hour with Jaws support here in England but they are none the wiser. I wonder if anyone here has come across the same issue and have discovered a solution to this rather annoying problem.

Many Thanks

Re: just one website

I seemed to be able to use the website without any problems. I found that it
had , ithink that it was 14 headings on the site and I saw that it had a lot
of links in the links list. So using the latest jaws, windows and chrome, I
didn't have a problem. Good luck in finding the answer to your problem.

Try going to
https://consortiumnews.com/

And see if you can get it to talk to you. It has the right date, but the
content won't talk.

Must be something wrong with this site. I tried opening it with IE and there
is nothing there.

It could mean anything.
Try with a different browser or screen-reader and see if you get the same
result.
And by "different screen-reader", that could mean a differetn JAWS version
that you might happen to have on your computer.

If you exhaust all possibilities, maybe you could contact the site
developers and see what, if any, changes have been made to the site recently
that might have impacted your experience.

Another thing you could try is using google to get to a specific page on
that site. Some sites have a weird "entry" screen; maybe yours has
introduced something like that which you are not able to bypass in the
normal way. Google could help with that.

What does it mean when Jaws is working fine with all the websites I go to,
but for this one website which I visit regularly, It appears not to be
working? I go to the site and Jaws tells me I'm there, but it doesn't then
tell me that I'm really there and able to move to where I want to go. I have
Magic way high up and only enough vision left to tell that if I use the
keys, things are happening, so I think that the website is up and running.
But I can't get it to talk. Everything else is fine. This just started
happening yesterday. I've been reading stuff on it every day before that.
