It looks like the Old Version site has Firefox 45 from March of 2016.
That should work with Jaws 17. You will want to make sure it isn't set to update automatically, if you decide to try it. http://www.oldversion.com/windows/mozilla-firefox-45-0-1

I know some people are still hosting version 52 on their sites, too. But you pretty much have to install it with your internet connection turned off just to keep it from updating. Why go through the trouble? You are pretty much right about falling behind the curve. You don’t have to use JAWS; if you don’t want to upgrade because of cost or any other reason, NVDA has worked with new versions of Firefox pretty much since the outset.

As for waterfox, I was asking David about exactly that: how often and whether it’s properly maintained. I am just a little bit skeptical about it because it is based on old Firefox code. That doesn’t mean someone isn’t working steadily to improve it and fix bugs, holes, etc, but it’s got to be a pretty small project.

Hey.

Version 60 will not work with any JAWS version older than 2018.

The ESR is just an update branch that operates a year behind the regular software updates while still providing security and maintenance fixes. So, for a while there, JAWS users were encouraged to use the ESR version, which was at 52 until the summertime. At that point, it moved forward to version 60, so old JAWS versions would no longer work with Firefox.

You won’t be able to use Firefox anymore because of their changed architecture that only works properly with JAWS 2018 or another screen-reader, or Edge (assuming you have Windows 10), because there is no Edge support in anything prior to the final build of JAWS 18. Some people have reported success with Waterfox, which uses Firefox legacy code. I don’t know about Waterfox, myself; I don’t know how well it is really supported by its developer and I am a bit cautious about it. I’m also not sure how much success you’ll have with Chrome, but I believe . updated Chrome still works fine with JAWS 18, so your best bet might be to try it.

Otherwise, you might have to run IE if you’re determined to keep using that JAWS version.

Hi Sandy,

I am currently using Firefox 55.0.3 with Jaws 16 and it works fine. It should also work with Jaws 17. I gave up on Jaws 17 after about 6 months, because of the constant crashes. I tried Jaws 18 when it came out, but the crashes continued. I have a perfectly stable, usable Windows 7 system with Jaws 16, Firefox 55 and Office 2010. Jaws never crashes (I probably just jinxed myself) and I can get my work done, which is the most important thing to me. Just be advised that Firefox 55 is a bit over a year old now, so it does not have all of the latest security updates. But if you use the Internet in a responsible manner, you should be ok. Also, if you have a version of Firefox newer than 55 already installed on your computer, you will have to uninstall it prior to installing version 55. Here is a link that will take you to the download page for the Windows 64-bit English version of FF 55.0.3:

Sandy,
A good deal of the major development for Google Chrome was done
beginning with JAWS 2018.
Some Chrome works with 17 but, you'll get better results with 2018 or
2019 if you can afford the $90 per year and update to 2019 via the
home annual subscription on the FS web pagelocated in the e-store.
go to the FS page and find the shop link.

You can pay $90 and upgrade right from JAWS 17 to the current JAWS.

There is no longer a 52 ESR though. The ESR is now at 60. You could download version 52 from somewhere else, but it wouldn’t be supported, so receive no security updates. It also automatically attempts to update itself when installed, so you’d have to jump through a couple of hoops in order to stop it from doing that – doesn’t really seem worth the trouble, to me.

Well, the bottom line is if one is not going to update their screen reader, they are pretty much on their own since support goes away for old software.

Re: best browser for jaws 17

JM Casey

HI.

I feel like there’s a basic misunderstanding of how the ESR is, and how it works.

I’ll try to explain this as best I can.

ESR means “extended support release”. This is not permanently tied to a version number of firefox. It is meant for system administrators in institutional settings (or others, perhaps) where it might not be possible to roll out the latest software updates at the same time, all of the time. The ESR itself will update to a new version of firefox about once a year (admittedly guessing at the once a year thing, but it seems logical) whereas the “normal” Firefox update branch will move to a new version as soon as it has cleared beta testing. This means you will, if you are using the ESR, see your Firefox jump a significant increment of versions when there is a full-fledged update. This happened in the summer of 2018: ESR switched from version 52 to version 60. At that point, I believe the “normal” firefox branch was at version 62.

It was version 57 that introduced the new Firefox Quantum architecture. It was when this happened that jAWS users were encouraged to switch to the ESR, which was, at that point, at 52. When this happened, we were warned that we only had about a year’s grace period until we would have to start using a version of Firefox Quantum. That period has now ended. If you are on the ESR, you are on version 60. If you are on the standard update system, you are at version 64. There is basically no point that I can see in using the ESR anymore, and in fact you might even have a better experience sticking with the regular updates when they are rolled out.

Either way though, you will have to use JAWS 2018 or 2019, or NVDA.

Hi Ali,

See if this helps:

I’ll copy an earlier answer I posted to this question.

The old shift-control-8 doesn't work in recent versions of Word. It's been replaced by alt-h, then 8.

What if you only want to suppress the space marker and not the paragraph marker? You can select only one of these items, along with several other markers
(tabs, etc.) by doing the following in Word 2016, and probably also in previous versions:

Alt-f, then t for "options."

Arrow down to "display."

Tab through the various checkboxes.

Subject: [jaws-users] Word Document 2016 and the space markers problem

Hello JAWS Experts,

I am facing this problem with my word 2016 documents yesterday and today. I do not know what I have hit and all of the sudden I have JAWS 2018 reading the word “Space Marker” whenever there is a blank space. I used to solve this problem when using JAWS 2017 by going to the ribbon and turn off something. This time I could not remember it and/or find/bump into  it.

I am using JAWS 2018, WINDOWS 10 AND MICROSOFT Word 2016.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: best browser for jaws 17

Hi.. I have not switched from the ESR version to the “regular” Firefox. I’m using the latest version of JAWS and have two questions.

First, has Mozilla resolved the issues that made it problematic to use the non-ESR Firefoxes with JAWs?

Second, is it worth switching to the non-ESR version of Firefox?

Thanks. John

Hi.

If you actually go to the link he provided, you’ll see it’s now providing version 60.

It might be helpful to provide a download link for the 60 the way that Richard did for 52.
