Bob,
Don't know what happened, but the clock works. The computer said it didn't install, but it's on my system tray and works. Go figure.

Thanks.

Edge won't work with JAWS 17, just so you know. It only works with JAWS 2018, and I guess it sort of works a little with JAWS 18. It's also only for Windows 10 users.

You are my superhero for the day.  I have my verbosity set to advanced and I never even thought to check the settings for advanced.  I just assumed that the instructor on this recorded tutorial I was listening to would have his setting as advanced, as well.  Ok, I know what area of JAWS settings center I will be exploring today!

Hi Robin,

I didn’t see an answer to your question go by, so I thought I would give it a try. I am using JAWS 2018 latest. It has to do with your JAWS verbosity setting. If you set JAWS “user Verbosity” to beginner, it will say “bold on” and “bold off” or whatever the formatting is. However, if your “user verbosity” is set to “intermediate” then it will just say “on” And “off.”

I keep my verbosity at intermediate and I learned something today trying to answer your question. If you go to the settings center – JAWS key + 6 on the number row-- tab once to get to the list of settings, Arrow down to “Speech Verbosity” and open that menu, you can change the verbosity level and also change what is spoken at each verbosity level. In Word when I would try to bold or otherwise format something, when I would turn it on, JAWS would say “on.” When I would try to stop the formatting JAWS would say “on” once again. Very confusing! I just when into the “configure Verbosity Level” menu and pressed space bar on “intermediate” and then made sure that all of the items that start with “control” were checked, and now when I turn formatting on I get “on” announced and when I turn the formatting “off” I hear JAWS say “off.” (One of those control items was not checked, but I now can’t remember which one.)

This may seem confusing, so if you have any questions let me know!

Take care and have fun!

Hi,

Since moving to JAWS, I have noticed that if I select text and change formatting such as to make it bold, pressing Control B only says “on”, not “bold on”.  I thought this was a quirk of JAWS, but I’m listening to a tutorial on JAWS and hearing someone else change formatting and it’s saying ”bold on”.  Any idea how I can enable this?

Hi Adrian/all,

I meant control on the pc plus any cursor routing key above the Braille cells on a Braille display, if you are using one. Now, I find that every time I visit amazon I am confronted with some surprise, not a pleasant one usually. They seem to be changing things all the time, so you could have been a victim of this.

Takis, to clarify, you’re suggesting pressing the control key with one of the mouse simulation buttons, that is, the divide and multiply keys on the keypad? I thought at first you meant the arrow keys, but they don’t work. Control with the left  mouse key just might. I’m waiting for the opportunity to test it.

As for my Amazon problem, I bypassed the one-click button and placed my order via “Add to cart.” I noticed here that a popup appeared asking me to buy or reject a warranty. Perhaps this popup interfered with the one-click process and JAWS didn’t detect it. Just a guess.

Windows Laptop Sleep Problem Solved

Tom Behler

               Hello, everyone.

First of all, I want to sincerely thank those on the list who responded to my sleep function issue with my Windows 7 laptop.  I have saved the various suggestions I received for future reference.

It is mysterious to me how these problems emerge.

Equally mysterious is the fact that within the past day or so, the problem appears to have corrected itself, with no further action on my part.

The whole issue continues to baffle me, but I’ll take the positive end result and move on.

Again, thanks to everyone for the assistance.

Configuring Freeswitch and Google Voice

Cristóbal <cristobalmuli@...>

Hello list,

So a follow up to a query I made on list a few weeks ago. Someone recommended as an accessible VOIP client Freeswitch. https://freeswitch.com/

I downloaded and installed it and it seems pretty basic, accessible  and easy to use which is great. My question is does anyone know how to configure Google Voice with it? Doing a quick search, I come up with: https://freeswitch.org/confluence/display/FREESWITCH/Google+Voice+API

Yeah, so a lot of that stuff laid out in that URL are things I’m not familiar with and seeing as how it’s going on two years old, I don’t know if anything’s changed for the better or worse.

Again, the FS client itself seems pretty nice  and accessible. It’s just getting the number properply configured for incoming and outgoing calls now I guess.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Re: Backing Up External Hard Drive

Hey Jerry.

If you “cut”, it will disappear. If you “copy”, it won’t. If you hit ctrl-x instead of ctrl-c, the window will say “moving _____ items”, and if you hit ctrl-c, it will say “copying”. So, if you want to keep the stuff on the source drive, remember not to use cut!

Since it’s an external drive, all I’d do is open the drive in file explorer, open the location you want to copy to in another window, go to the external, hit ctrl-a, and then ctrl-c in the other window.

This will copy everything. If you’re looking for an automatic/synchronised/scheduled regular backup though, you’d be best finding another method.

Instead of closing jaws, you might simply consider pressing jawskey-space and place your mode on “speech on demand”, this will probably silence jaws and will not be disturbing your teamviewer partner.

Hi Adrian-all,

I have not encountered this one as yet, however, using chrome, I have found that if I press contrl with one of the cursor route buttons on my display, things work when other ways do not. Jaws usually says °control mouse click.°

Hope this might help a bit,

                                                                Best regards,

                                                                Takis

Subject: [jaws-users] Amazon one-click button

This morning I can’t activate Amazon’s one-click button. I’ve tried with Chrome, Firefox and IE11. I’ve pressed the spacebar and enter key on the link, but no luck. In the case of chrome and IE11, I get a message saying something went wrong, but no explanation. I called amazon’s disability number, but the woman who answered didn’t understand the problem. I’ll try calling again in the hope someone with more screenreader familiarity answers, but meanwhile I’m hoping someone here has some ideas.
