Editing cells in Excel 2016

Alan Robbins

Hello,

Using Win 1803 and latest Jaws 2018 I run into a strange situation when trying to edit cell contents in excel within MS Office 2016

Whether the cell contains text or a formula, some cells can be edited by dressing F2 and then arrowing back and forth making necessary corrections. However, other cells doing the same only reads the entire cell contents when arrowing either way. No pattern or consistency to this behavior. Have others experienced this too? Any work arounds?

Best,

Al

Re: Control-F Inconsistent for Searching in Word 2010

Hello Margaret,

Here are the steps for getting CTRL+F to work in the traditional manner. These steps work in Word 2013. I don't have Word 2016 but I think they should also work in that version of Word.

1. Use Alt with F followed by T to go into the Word options.
2. In the list of categories either use down arrow or press the letter C until you get to the “customize ribbon” category.
3. Press Alt with T to use the customize button.
4. Use down arrow until you get to the Home tab.
5. Tab to the commands list.
6. In the commands list press E until you find the “EditFind” command.
7. Tab a couple times to the “press new shortcut key” box.
8. Press CTRL with F.
9. Tab to the Save Changes In box and choose Normal.DOTM.
10. Tab to the Assign button and press spacebar.
11. Tab to the Close button and use spacebar.
12. Tab to OK and use spacebar.

Take care.

Thank you very much for this, Adrian. The JAWS Find command seems to work consistently here and I'm used to using it with other programs.

I'll look for the discussion from several months ago.

Some time ago, I found an old post from someone on one of the lists that I'm on that I think gave instructions for modifying Word so Control-F would work properly. Unfortunately, I had a roaring headache at the time and saved it in one of my e-mail folders figuring I'd remember where I moved it and could try it when I was feeling better. Now, I don't remember which list it was on or who the poster was.

2010

Good Afternoon, All:

Months ago I started having a problem searching for text in Word 2010 documents running JAWS 18 on my Windows 7 64 bit Home machine. The Control-F command is very Inconsistent and often works only one time out of six or more times or even a dozen. I've try pressing Control-F several times quickly when the normal one fails since I thought I saw a post somewhere that that helps and it still isn't consistent and it often takes more than a half dozen tries to search. Sometimes Control-F doesn't even work the first time I use it that day with a Word document. I've even tried the other Control key in case the problem was with the right hand one.

I renewed my JAWS SMA and installed J2018 and still have the same problem. Control-F seems to work every time with J16 and 17; and also with NVDA2018.1.1 and also worked consistently with NVDA 2017.x.

When I press Control-F with JAWS, JAWS says nothing at all instead of
something like navigation pane and search box where I can type in what
I want to

search for and then hit enter.

Any help getting Control-F to work with JAWS18 and 2018 would be greatly appreciated. I use Thunderbird for e-mail and JAWS 2018 works better for me than some of the previous versions of JAWS and that's why I am using it.

I worked at Northern New England AAA Call center for 16 years. In the interview for the job, I brought my Disc, and on which was the second interview for the job. As they were curious how this Jaws would work. So, in that interview on the Support and training room, I installed with their tech person, Jaws. They were very protective of their Data.. With it only in the demo-mode I could and did show them. Now if one loves Laptops and brought their Laptop with them and was willing to show on the Laptop this would be a step out of the picture. Such as using a layout of Documents and ETC. Along with the accessing the web-site. I was the first ever blind person they hired, so only used my license and Jaws. Yet, when it became clear there was others interested, blind, to work, I explained to Michael, Vice President, this would require and then could be placed on their System and pumped  into the computers being used by the Blind personal. Which Michael did. A little more expensive and yet willing to do as there was at the time, as I am retired now, for any company to hire a disabled person. So it off-set the cost. I have no clue what the price is now for a business to purchase the license now.

Thanks, Jim. Function key 6 works here. I seem to sometimes have to tab several times to get a result, but I'll have to spend more time with it since I got a strange button for store hours on one of my attempts. I have no idea what that was all about since I don't think I was searching for a store's phone number.

I have a couple of big documents that I use several times a day and alternate search commands like yours will be a huge help.

I’m confident there’s no difference in this regard between word 2007 and 2016. When pasting in text from other sources, I don’t use the simple control-v paste command, but instead the alt-control-v special paste command, press enter, arrow down once, and then press enter again. It avoids format conflicts.

This happens to me when I have different formats in the same document. You can have different formats without a problem occurring, such as when you indent quotations, etc. However, if you’ve been copying text from different sources and randomly mixing it up, you can confuse poor old Word. If you didn’t intend to use different formats (font, point size, etc.), I’d suggest selecting the entire text and conforming it to the format of your choice.

OK. How simple I will make it. I am going to interview in which I need to explain about JAWS and license. I want to give to the person doing the interview info about jaws and how a company can get a license.

Holger, this is the second time you’ve posted this same query, but I’m afraid I, for one, can’t make sense of it. Please try to explain exactly what you’re asking. Why, for example, would a prospective employer want to know about your JAWS license?

Where I can get info about jaws 2018 and license? Want to show in interview when I talk about accessibility.

Have you rotated the screen?

That’s the only thing I can think of why that’s happened

With such a long name, it is likely some of us will delete before it stops reading the name.  When your name is longer than the actual message and takes JAWS forever to get through it …

Hi Brian/all,

I don’t want to be off topic but yes the situation was really bad, as people were trapped in a resort between a mountain and a seashore that was difficult to reach. Anyway, thanks for your expression of solidarity. Things just calm down, but are far from being back to normal yet.

                                                                Sory for being off-topic,

Hi all,

I wonder what would be wrong with my suggestion of simply hitting enter, once the Greek stram on my address starts speaking. By hitting enter you should get into my message straight away, and unless I get mistaken with the keybord, I have six of them stored, it would be all in English.

                                                                Kindest regards,

                                                Takis

Hi David,

Please let me know what text string you use to make this Greek string say, Takis!  I've copied the text from speech history, I've copied it from the from field, and several other ways, but I can't get the dictionary manager to do anything withit!

Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

I might just put your from information in my dictionary and have it say
something shorter. Otherwise as the saying goes, "it's all Greek to me."

Unfortunately I cannot change my "from" credentials" so, I might suggest
once you hear the Greek characters assumingly spoken by our common screen
reader, you simply hit enter and see the message.
All the best,
Takis

Don, you don't seem to realize that Takis is writing from Greece and so his
"From" line is naturally in that language. I, for one, am grateful he
contributes so articulately in English.

Your messages are coming through, and your excessively long email identifier
is a pain to wade through with every message for  those of us with screen
