Most laptops have an insert key, often next to the back space, and desktop computers have three of them if you count the caps lock.

Hi,

No, that is not at all my concern. My concern is that there does not appear to be any other Insert key except for the caps lock key in laptop mode. I know very well how to use the caps lock key in laptop mode, but very much regret not having more than one Insert key as is the case with the desktop keyboard.

If this is what concerns you, that not be of concern, one only needs tap the caps lock twice quickly to invoke the caps lock and the same to disengage it.

Hello to Glenn and all others in the list,

What about the fact that the laptop keyboard uses the caps lock, and only the caps lock as the Insert key? To the best of my knowledge, there is no way of having more than one key serve as the Insert key, unless one chooses to use a key remapping program such as Sharp Keys. This restriction is not present when using the desktop keyboard. Nor is this restriction present when using NVDA. Perhaps I am totally incorrect with regard to the above statement. If so, I'd love to be corrected.

This disadvantage is about as miserable as having only one Windows key on the more modern keyboards.

Cheers

I think you’re looking for the laptop keyboard layout. You’ll find this in the JAWS menu:

Insert-j for JAWS

Press enter on “Options.”

Press enter on “Basics” and tab over to the keyboard layout list.

I looked in the documentation for Jaws but I don’t see anything for this. Is there a hockey that you can press to have jaws indicate how many inches from top and bottom and left and right the Microsoft word cursor is? Even when I hit the tab most of the time Jaws does not indicate how far I am moving away from the side of the document. I agree with you that the laptop configuration should be the default. I would suspect that most people on this list use the laptop computer. In fact more laptop computers are being sold these days than desk top computers. Now we know that not all laptop computers have the number pad. In that case giving them instructions to use the num pad to do a thing is no help. I suspect that back in the early days this was not true. and likely more than not the user back then was on a desktop computer. But since that is the way things were always done, they will keep doing it that way. I am sure that the powers that be will not be reading this post, but if they were this is what I would say, Hey folks, get with it, it is not  still the twentieth century. Let’s get with the twenty first century. It is time to consider the laptop the default configuration.

Re: Chrome bookmarks manager

I wasn’t aware of this F6 key with the bookmarks toolbar enabled. It’s actually a convenient shortcut. For me, it takes me with one or two tabs to my imported Firefox bookmarks.

The only problem is that it seems to be inconsistent. Indeed, more often than not, when I hit F6 and tab down, instead of the imported bookmarks folder, I’ll either get Bookmark this page Button or Edit this bookmark. If I continue to tab down, I’ll then get into my various extensions and whatnot.

Any way to make this behavior a consistent one?

Subject: [jaws-users] Chrome bookmarks manager

In my previous attempt to describe how to use Chrome’s bookmarks, I mentioned that pressing F6 landed me on my IE favorites. I said I didn’t understand why, though I was happy it did. Now I know what’s happening, and it’s a nice feature.

To make this work, I’m pretty sure you need to invoke the bookmarks manager, which you can do either through the Chrome menu or by pressing control-shift-o. Once invoked, it stays even after you’ve opened and closed Chrome.

Now, when you press F6 twice, you’ll land at the beginning of a series of tabs. In my case, the first happened to be IE favorites. Lately, it’s shifted to “Apps button.” However, when I tab once, I land on my IE favorites. But then I press tab again, and I land on one of my new Chrome favorites. And so on. this makes navigating Chrome bookmarks very convenient. No need to go into the cumbersome Chrome menu.

By the way, Marie, thank you for alerting us to alt-f as a way to get right into the Chrome menu. It saves a keystroke, and these days saved keystrokes seem to me a godsend.

Layout followup

I just switched to laptop layout.  The caps lock key and the insert keys do not always do the same thing.  Caps lock j reads the prior line, and insert j opens the JAWS menu.  Either the caps lock key or the insert key, when used with the up arrow key will read the current line.

In my Outlook 2010, insert-a processes appointments and attachments.  Caps lock-a is a document reading command.  It reads to the bottom of the document or to the bottom of the window, depending on which cursor is active, or so key identifier says.  Smile.  In other words, it’s another say all command.   These were just random selections.

I’ll just have to play with this more.  The caps lock key, as a modifier can not be used as a sticky key, which I would miss, having been spoiled by being able to use the insert key that way.

But my point in my product suggestion was that the caps lock key should be made available in the desktop layout.  Some people might be confused when the two modifiers do not do the same thing.  In the desktop layout, they would be the same.  Again, those of us who had this option in Window-Eyes would appreciate it in JAWS.  Just saying.  And nothing wrong in asking!  Smile.

And the elves were listening on the contact us link for the quality contact form.  I got a quick reply and a reply to my response.

Hello,

This is a bit of a long story.  Hope I make it clear enough.

I am using Windows 10 and JAWS 2019 beta (although, the version of JAWS doesn’t matter).

When I was using Internet Explorer, I was able to save favorites easily and use first key navigation to find them again.  This is difficult to do in Chrome.  But, there is a way.  It is just a little convoluted.

On my pc, Internet explorer saves its favorites in a folder called C:\Users\Reed\Favorites.

I created a shortcut to that folder and assigned it a shortcut key Alt+Control+Shift+f.

So, it doesn’t matter where I am on my pc, I can hit Alt+Control+Shift+f and my favorites folder is opened.  I can use first letter navigation to find my specific favorite, press enter and I go to the desired web page.

Using Chrome, the bookmarks are normally saved inside Chrome.  You cannot use first letter navigation to locate a specific bookmark.  You have to have Chrome opened and down-arrow through them all until you find the desired one.

When on a web page, you hit Control+d to bookmark that page.  Or, you use the menu to do the same thing.  Then you can down-arrow through all of your other bookmarks to find it again.

You have to have Chrome already open to do this.

I use a different method…

I ask Chrome to create a shortcut on my desktop and then I cut and paste that desktop shortcut to my favorites folder C:\Users\Reed\Favorites.

With a web page open in Chrome, I hit Alt to open the menu and go down to  More Tools (or hit Alt then spacebar then l).

Then I hit Left-Arrow then Down-Arrow to find Create Shortcut.

Here, I start in the Name field that I can change or leave the same.

I hit tab and land on a checkbox field “Open as Window” which I can check or uncheck.  If this is checked, Chrome will open the web page as a new window rather than a new tab.  My check/uncheck is saved.  So, the next time I come here, I don’t have to look at this checkbox.

I hit tab one more time to hit create and press Enter.

If I don’t want to change the name or the checkbox, once I am in the Create Shortcut dialog, I just hit enter.

The shortcut will now be on my desktop.

I go to my desktop and locate the shortcut.

Depending on how nervous I am, I will hit Control+X or Control+c to cut or copy the shortcut to the clipboard.

I will then hit my magic Alt+Control+Shift+f to open my Favorites folder and paste or copy the shortcut into it.

This seems rather convoluted.  It really isn’t.  It is just a couple extra steps to get the shortcut into my Favorites folder.  Once it is there, it is so much more useable that I find the extra steps worth it.

Now that I’ve set it up, it is so nice that I don’t have to open Chrome first.  I can hit my Alt+Control+Shift+f key anywhere, quickly find my bookmark/favorite and press enter to open the web page.

Hope this is relatively clear.

JAWS Support of Chrome 70 by Miguel Abdo

Google released version 70 of the Chrome Browser this week, and you may notice that navigating combo boxes has changed when using JAWS, no, you are not doing anything wrong. This change in behavior is due to a how the new Chrome version handles events, which in turn impacts combo boxes.  This change impacts users of JAWS 2018 and earlier when navigating to a combo box and attempting to read the contents without first opening it using ALT + DOWN Arrow. Thanks to our close partnership with the Google Chrome developers, we have implemented the changes needed in JAWS 2019 and Fusion 2019 to ensure combo boxes will read correctly, without the need to open them first.

This same change will be available in JAWS 2018 in a November update, and will correct this behavior for JAWS 2018 and Fusion 2018. In the meantime, when navigating to a combo box open it so first to get the correct behavior.

Then, check the messages that are spam and hit the Delete Forever button.

Installed it this morning and that darn bug where Jaws doesn’t speak the email addresses in the to, cc or bcc fields as you type or as you arrow down is still there.
Also and what’s very concerning since at first I dismissed it as a bug, but it seems more and more as though it was intended is that no longer can you have something spoken in a foreign language with the dictionary manager as before. For those of us who have or deal with foreign names/places or whatever, being able to configure the proper language and pronunciation is very important. Now, you’re only given the option for all languages and the defaults in the various combo boxes. Come on Vispero, what’s up with that?
A new thing is that Jaws is announcing line break for every . . . line break which is getting annoying fast. I’m guessing/hoping that this is just one of those settings that you have to go in and toggle. Does anyone in fact know how to disable this Jaws announcement? I did a quick once over in the settings and missed it.

What's new in this release:

The following is a list of improvements made between Public Beta 2 and Public Beta 3. Note that while many customer-reported enhancements are included
in this release, the following is a list of more notable changes.

Help Improve Freedom Scientific Products

JAWS 2019 includes a new option which allows us to collect anonymous usage information that is generated as you use the software for your daily tasks.
This data helps us continue to make improvements as well as more easily locate and address problems. Collected data includes JAWS version, operating system
version, language, country, as well as information on various JAWS settings such as the current synthesizer, braille display, and braille table.

If you choose to participate, no spoken or braille content is collected and no data is shared with any parties outside of Freedom Scientific. The data
we collect strictly helps us better understand how our software is being used in the field so we can quickly make enhancements to features being used the
most by our customers. If you choose not to participate, then no usage data is collected and transmitted.

You can change your selection at any time by doing the following:

list of 4 items
1. Press INSERT+6 on the number row to open Settings Center and press CTRL+SHIFT+D to load the default settings file.
2. Navigate to Miscellaneous in the tree view and press RIGHT ARROW to expand the group.
3. Use the SPACEBAR to select or clear the "Submit Anonymous Usage Data" check box.
4. Press ENTER to save your change and close Settings Center.
list end

You can also choose whether or not to participate in this program through the Startup Wizard located in the JAWS Help menu.

Other Changes
list of 12 items
• In response to customer feedback, JAWS now supports grade 1 literary braille input for languages such as English that offer more than one type of braille
output. For example, if you open the Braille Translation group in Settings Center and set the output to Unified English Braille Grade 1, you will now be
able to choose between computer braille or Unified English Braille Grade 1 for input.
• Resolved an issue where Vocalizer Expressive voices installed with certain languages were being removed during a JAWS uninstall.
• Resolved a reported issue where the wrong help message was being displayed for the "When pausing during character navigation, speak character phonetically"
option in Settings Center.
• Resolved an issue in Microsoft Office with content not being properly aligned in braille when using a language such as Hebrew that displays text using
right-to-left.
• Resolved a customer reported issue where page breaks in Word documents were not being announced by JAWS.
• Addressed a reported issue where Microsoft Word would sometimes close unexpectedly when attempting to edit after spell checking a document.
• In the Windows 10 calculator, resolved an issue where the result was not being spoken automatically.
• A customer using Java SwingSet reported that after restarting JAWS, text was no longer read correctly. This has been resolved.
• Addressed a reported issue where a Say All (INSERT+DOWN ARROW) was not working as expected in a Citrix published desktop after locking the client system.
• If Braille Mode is turned off in Google Docs, resolved an issue where the BACKSPACE key was not deleting text as expected.
• Addressed a customer reported issue with JAWS not reading the ampersand character in Firefox.
• Addressed several localization issues with Russian and Hebrew.

Hi,

I’m not sure where to make this change but here’s what is happening in windows 10 for me.

Every time I press a letter while in documents folder, the desktop, etc. it opens up a search box.

For example, if I am in my documents folder, and want to jump to my notes folder by pressing the letter n, a search box will appear with the letter n, and if I tab, there will be items with results with anything starting with n. How do I stop this behavior?

Thanks.

Hi,

I’ve seen an article somewhere claiming that iOS 12.1 causes various problems and advising delaying update. Does anyone on the list find that the latest update actually does cause any problems?

Amen!
I agree!

Many more people are using laptops and even tablets now. JAWS needs to access tablets better. Sighted users are using tablets way more now!

I really think that laptop layout should be the default.

Nothing is lost with that setting, it only adds more functionality, and standard keyboard users would have to do nothing differently.

I think you’re looking for the laptop keyboard layout. You’ll find this in the JAWS menu:

Insert-j for JAWS

Press enter on “Options.”

Press enter on “Basics” and tab over to the keyboard layout list.

Hi all, I have a netbook sized laptop that I use. The insert key is the same key as delete but when I try to do inser F6 nothing happens. I tried adding the function key but nothing happened. Is there a way I can use the caps lock key or shift key as the insert key? Where do I change this? Running Windows 10.

Beta 19 keep repeating over and over.

Mr. Ed

Hi, All,

I am using W10 1803 and Jaws Beta 3 that I downloaded today. I am also using Outlook 2010. Here is what is happening. When I am say in my inbox and I have Jaws read an email in my inbox which gives the name of the person, subject, date and size of the email. If I leave the focus on one email Jaws read all those things then starts reading them again. It just keeps reading name, subject, date and size of the email over and over. If I stop Jaws from speaking and just leave the focus there for a while it will start reading the same line over and over and over until I stop it. This did not start happening until I downloaded Jaws beta 3 today.

Is anyone else having this issue. I will report it if more people are having this issue.

Does anyone know how to get to the use classic clubhouse on espn fantasy

Re: espn fantasy basketball

I do ESPN fantasy football, so I would imagine that the layout is similar. Just below the list of players on your team and their stats, look for a link that says "use classic clubhouse". That will change the layout to the one with the combo boxes.

Open Gamil account on a web browser.

Go to the Spam folder.

Check the messages that are not spam and hit the button that indicates they
are not spam.

Then, check the messages that are spam and hit the Delete Forever button.

Unfortunately, Google's learning mechanism isn't perfect; I occasionally see
messages from certqain people on this list marked as spam, while others from
the same people get into my inbox.

How do you make spam messages nonspam messages. I just moved them to my
inbox, then to a folder.
Is that how? Will the person's messages now come into my inbox?
