Date
Copying a File Path, Comment

Rebecca Lineberger

Just a FYI comment to my response to Adrian below.  Google tells me that the copy file path has been around for quite some time.  This from PC World is dated March 2012.

1. Open Windows Explorer and find the photo (or document) in question.

2. Hold down the Shift key, then right-click the photo.

3. In the context menu that appears, find and click Copy as path. This copies the file location to the clipboard. (FYI, if you don't hold down Shift when

you right-click, the Copy as path option won't appear.)

So the option is in Windows 7 Windows Explorer too, not just in Windows 10.

Adrian,

Yes, so I discovered!  LOL.

Normally if I need to check a file path to distinguish one version of a document from another, I do a search in File Explorer (or in Windows Explorer in Windows 7 when I had it) and when I found the files I needed, right arrowing would give me the date, size and file location.

As to your point, I absolutely agree.  It’s always best for us to know as much as possible about the OS or programs that we use.  And since Microsoft is always improving things, smile, this learning experience never ends.

Rebecca, I want to pick up on just one point in your post. In Windows 7, as in Windows 10, we tend to assume that the applications key, shift-F10 and the simulated right-mouse click all bring up the same menu. Usually they do, but sometimes there are discrepancies. I wish I could think of an example, but none comes to mind beyond what you talk about here. It’s worth emphasizing this point because sometimes going through all three menus can bring up what we’re looking for.

I apologize if this repeats information already given. I send this along because others may have been working under the same incorrect assumption that I was.  Smile.

Maybe this is something though that has changed with Windows 10 and I never knew!  Thank you Microsoft!  LOL.

I’ve always used the application or context menu key, since it’s easier for my hands than shift-f10.  I’d always thought that the two were equivalent.  But, at least on my system (Windows 1803) they don’t seem to be.  Sigh.  And maybe I’ve never noticed because I’ve always gone to properties to get a file path.  Now there’s a much quicker way!  Smile.

With just the context menu key, I get a menu of choices, just as a sighted person gets when they right-click with the mouse.  But when I add shift to the press of the context menu key (or just press shift-f10, as people have to do who have no application or context menu key) there it is, as is explained in the article below—except that it’s written for mouse-users, so they talk about shift-right-clicking.

Quick Tip: Use the Right-Click Menu to Copy a File Path

By

Sometimes you need to make a note of the exact path of a file in Windows when, for example, troubleshooting an issue, editing batch scripts, programming,

or simply for file management purposes.

Instead of typing out a file’s path by hand, or trying to grab it from the file or folder’s Properties window, why not use a quick and easy Windows trick?

When you right-click on a file by default, this is what you see (your right-click menu may look different based on your version of Windows and the applications

installed on your PC):

windows 10 right click menu

But if instead you press and hold the Shift key before right-clicking, you’ll instead see this:

windows 10 copy as path

It’s a similar list of commands, but notice that new one highlighted in red? That’s right, when you Shift + Right-Click on a file or folder, you’ll get

a new option to Copy as Path. Instead of copying the file, this puts the file’s path in your clipboard, where you can then paste it wherever it’s needed.

windows 10 cmd paste path

Nothing groundbreaking, for sure, but it’s a handy, relatively unknown tip that can make many file-based tasks much quicker to deal with.

I hope this helps others as it did me.  Smile.

Rebecca

I remember this identical discussion on this list a number of weeks ago. At
that time I believed it was established that there is no simple document
that you could hand to an employer to accurately describe Jaws to an
employer. If you really want something like this, take the time to put one
together yourself, focusing on the main things that jaws can do, and keep
your material to one page, although, in my experience, an employer would
much rather hear the explanation from you, as it gives them an idea of your
communication skills, as well as knowledge of the product.

I'm sure that there is documentation, but I think it would be more
impressive in an interview for you to explain it yourself.

You only need to say something like:

I use something called a screenreader, the one I use is called Jaws, it
turns the text on the screen into spoken words, and I use Windows keyboard
commands and some Jaws commands to access the various parts of the text that
I need to read.

Morning, all

Going for an interview next week, I need documentation about what jaws does
so I can give it to the person who will be doing the interview instead of
just talking about. FS does not have anything like in about jaws. Just talk
about the fixes. Does anyone have something like that? I am going for the
interview on 09-12-18. Thanks

Re: link for VLC media player

ely.r@...

It is possible to make VLC the default player for DVDs via the control
panel. If you make that change, then when a DVD is inserted, spun up and
recognized, VLC will startup automatically. This is a good solution unless
you use several media players for different reasons as VLC will always
start. Even then, you can simply exit VLC and use another app to play the
DVD.
Good luck,
Rick

It's one of the menus that you pull down from the menu bar at the top of the
VLC screen. Alt-m should get you to it.
There's also a keyboard shortcut for opening a disc, which is one of the
media menu options. Hit ctrl-d to get to it. You'll see a box with options.

I don't have a DVD with me now to test it, but you should access these

I had to look up that extension, but this might be a part of your problem.
.bup files are some kind of backup information for a DVD and not meant to be
opened.
If you have a full DVD, you probably want to be opening this from the media
menu in VLC.
If you only have a .bup file, something is probably missing.
Maybe look for something with the extension .vob Even so, DVDs are not meant
to be played this way, generally. Your index files on the DVD tell the
programme or player where to go to get the audio/video information for
specific chapters or parts of the DVD, and these are generally .vob files.
So, is what you're trying to do play a DVD?
Sorry if I missed an earlier part of the thread.

Here is the way I do it.

Go into any document.

Press Control D to open the Font attributes dialog.

Select the font type and size you like.

Shit tab until you hear the button for “Set as Default” and hit enter on it.  In Office 2016, this button is two buttons to the left of the OK button.  You can tab to it, but you’ll have to go past so many other font options, that Shift tabbing to it is faster. When I just did it with JAWS 2018 running, JAWS warned me that this is a “true type font…” before it actually read the “Set As Default” button name.  Not sure if you’ll get that warning.

Hi Mike b,

I found the first set of steps worked well.

My friend who assisted me says that some of the options in the Windows defender area are different depending on if one is running home or pro.

We did manage to change the setting though.

Thanks again.

Below are 3 different sets of steps , and one of them  should work for you.

The following steps were created using the Windows 10 Version 1803 version of Windows Defender Security Center:

Open Windows Defender Security Center.
Navigate to Virus & threat protection pane then activate the Virus & threat protection settings link then activate the Add or remove exclusions link.
Select Add an exclusion.
Select File or Folder depending on what you wish to exclude.  Options for Process or a File type are also presented, but these are used relatively rarely.
Navigate to the file and/or folder where Defender is being told to skip scanning and press Enter.
When User Account Control appears, respond Yes to continue.
If you wish to remove something from the exclusions list, follow steps 1 thru 3, but then select an item in the exclusions list, then click “Remove” and respond Yes when UAC appears.

1. Windows key + I

2. Press enter on Update and Security.

3. Arrow down to, Windows Defender, press enter.

4. Tab to & press spacebar or enter on, Open Windows Defender Security Center Button.

5. Press spacebar or enter on Virus and Threat Protection button.

6. Tab to,Virus & threat protection settings Button & press the spacebar or enter.

7. Tab to, Add or remove exclusions Link, & press enter.

8. Press the spacebar on, Add an Exclusion button, now press enter on what you want to exclude.  Your options are File, File Folder, File Type, or Process.  After you press enter, now it's all about navigating to what / where you want excluded.
Note:  I pressed enter on Folder to highlight the drive I wanted to exclude, & I believe I pressed enter on it, but your options might vary.  It seems like different systems & their set-ups might deliver different selection options.

Information
Windows Defender helps protect  your PC against malware (malicious software) like viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. Malware can
infect your PC without your knowledge: it might install itself  from an email message, when you connect to the Internet, or  when you install certain apps
using a USB flash drive, CD, DVD, or other removable media. Some malware can also be programmed to run at unexpected times, not only when it's installed.

Windows Defender is  included with Windows and helps keep malware from infecting your PC in two ways:
list of 2 items nesting level 1
• Providing real-time protection. Windows Defender notifies you when malware tries to install itself or  run on your PC. It also notifies you when apps
try to change  important settings.
• Providing anytime scanning options. Windows Defender automatically scans your PC for installed malware on a regular basis, but you can also start  a
scan whenever you want. Windows Defender automatically removes (or temporarily quarantines) anything that's detected during a scan.
list end nesting level 1

If you like, you can add exclusions to Windows Defender for files, folders (file locations), file extensions (file types), and processes that you are confident
are 100% safe and secure to reduce the scan time of Windows Defender.

For example, a sandbox, ISO files, or virtual machines.

Hi all,

I am sending this to two lists, so that it might be seen by more speakdropbox users. Windows defender has considered this most useful program as a threat and in my case, refuses to let it in, having  per force, removed it from my pc. It has been to no avail any attempt to have it installed, and both me and my computer tec who saw to this through teamviewer, do not wish to remove securities. This little program has been most useful to me and I really regret this behavior. I was wondering, if other speakdropbox users have come up with such problems recently. We are talking about version 19. I am using latest jaws 2018 built, windows 10 home.

                                                                Any help appreciated,

Re: Copying a File Path

Hi Rebecca and List,

I confess I haven't read but a couple of the latest posts to this thread so if I'm repeating something, I apologize. Also, I've been known to install a variety of program utilities so it's very possible that what I see when viewing a file's context menu in Windows Explorer might be different from what you see especially as I'm running Windows 7. When I right click or shift F10 on a file in a Windows Explorer dialog, one of the choices I have toward the top of the menu list is Copy full name to clipboard. I notice when I peruse through my clipboard database using Ditto, I get the exact results when choosing Copy as path discussed below as I do when selecting Copy full name to clipboard on my usual context menu.

I just wanted to share this in case others might have the same option to see if they also get the full path without the need for using the shift key before launching the context menu.

Smile.

Rebecca

Here are step by Step instruction. If you find yourself tripping over a rock in the path, let me know.,,
Starting From the desktop and tab to the start button and click on it.
An edit field will open and in it type the text control panel.

Usually, one only needs to type a few characters and the auto complete feature will bring up the word control panel.
when this happens, press the enter key.
You should now be in the control panel in a search field. Type the words default Programs and press tab one.
You should now be on a clickable item called Default Programs, press enter.
Tab down to a link named Set your Default Programs and press enter.
You will, at last, be in a list of tasks you want to do on your computer. Here is where you select which app to use for that task. Press the tab key until you hear
Video Player Movies and TV and press enter.
What you will have now is a list of those apps that can play video. You will tab through this list. Don't be thrown off if the first in the list is the app Photos, you are in the right place.
Tab until you here VLC Media player. And press enter on it.
You will end up back in the list with focus on Video player but it now had VLC media player selected for that task.
You can always change to another app by using the same process.
I have no way of knowing how auto play is sent on your computer. You can try inserting a DVD and see if VLC starts. If it does not, then you need to turn auto play on. Get this far and do the test and let me know what happens. If auto play is off, the step for turning it on are similar to what you just did but simpler.
Good luck
Rick

hi how in control panel do you make VLC the default player for DVDS?

I have that installed and want to give that player A try for playing DVDS and I would also like to make that player the default for that as well.

It is possible to make VLC the default player for DVDs via the control

recognized, VLC will startup automatically. This is a good solution unless
you use several media players for different reasons as VLC will always
start. Even then, you can simply exit VLC and use another app to play the
DVD.
Good luck,

Yes I did. It would be nice to have it play when opened, but at least at
this point, I know there is info on the disc.

play it I guess.
Thanks for everyones help. I can still use that tutorial though.

It's one of the menus that you pull down from the menu bar at the top of the
VLC screen. Alt-m should get you to it.
There's also a keyboard shortcut for opening a disc, which is one of the
media menu options. Hit ctrl-d to get to it. You'll see a box with options.

Ok.
I don't have a DVD with me now to test it, but you should access these
through the media menu of vlc. Provided the DVD isn't constructed in a weird
way somehow, VLC should be able to figure out where to start it playing.

Mike,
I mentioned last night over this whole DVD debacle that it was Windows
8.1 and JAWS 18, but will mention it again to stay in compliance.
I set VLC to default and am still getting the same thing. I will try it

Hi Kurt,

what version of Jaws & Windows are you running? Have to ask this to
make your question fit list rules.
Whatever version of either go into your control panel / default
programs and set VLC as the default program. When you get a button
called, Set defaults for this program, press spacebar to open, tab 1
time to , Select All checkbox, and spacebar this to check it, tab to,
Save, press the spacebar, tab to, Okie Dokie, & press enter.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

I am using Thunderbird version 52.9.1
I got a security alert message in my email from google Gmail.com I believe I fix the issue. However while I can get email and send email from my iPhone when I try to use this version of Thunderbird from the computer I keep getting cannot logon retry and so forth. I’m not sure what I can do next.

That's a pain whenever you change your location.  Try opening your email thru the Google program, then try again opening your inbox if that's how you do it normally.

i got this message too. but i aggnored it.
the last time i got this message i went to my web mail and checked the one that said something like don't allow programs that are a security risk.
but it didn't say which program it was.
it was windows live mail. and google blocked all in and out going mail until i went back and unchecked it.
so i don't pay any attention anymore to these warnings.

Insert + B and insert + A do not work.

Hi All,

I tried doing the insert + B to get to the chevron button but it is not working. Also the insert + A does not work to go to the action center. Did Jaws break this on the last update. I have two computers running the latest W10 and Jaws and it does not work on either computer. I also check with a friend of mine and his is not working either. Is anyone else having this issue?

Re: Removing Facebook Notifications

Hi Rick,
Do you mean changing the address?
You go to the page as normal, and for FaceBook, they use an M in place of
the WWW
So to get to the address field on a web page, do alt + D
Then press the home key and then right arrow to you come to the period after
the WWW
Then backspace out the three Ws, and put in an M
That is for Mobile.
Press enter, and you will be on the same page, but the mobile version.
HTH.
