Hi Holjer. The below suggestions, as issued to us by our service desk at work can improved the experience with jaws, although these things are not critical.

You will find that Outlook 2016 is very similar to Outlook 2010. All of the hotkeys that you know from Outlook 2010 will still work as expected. There are some new features that you will find useful.

Initial setup

There are some settings in Outlook that should be changed to improve accessibility.

Turn off the Reading Pane.

To turn off the reading pane, press the following keys after opening Outlook:

Alt, v, p, n, o.

Turn off the to-do bar

To turn off the to-do bar, pres the following keys after opening Outlook:

Alt, V, B, O.

Turn off Grouping of Messages

By default, Outlook is set to display messages in groups such as today, yesterday, last week, etc. You may wish to turn off this option to make the message list easier to navigate.

To do this, press the following keys after starting Outlook:

Alt, V, A, B.

Then, arrow down to Show in Groups and make sure it is unchecked. If it is checked, just press Enter to uncheck it and return to the message list.

Using jaws 2019, outlook and w1              0. Are there setting that I can configure to make outlook accessible? Want to make outlooks accessible to me and easy to use with jaws. For those who use jaws for along time help me do the same to make outlook experience better.

I hate it when computer technicians do that.

Hi

As stated above, you can define a key to start JAWS so the combination of
Control+alt+(Chosen key(s)) will start a new copy of JAWS.    However it
used to be that it will only start a new copy of JAWS and not stop a
currently running copy of JAWS.  So as I have seen, you can have 2 copies of
JAWS jabbering away at each other.  So to recycle JAWS, you first have to
stop the currently running copy and then start the new copy of JAWS.  I
believe that this is still true.

Hi Glenn,

When you say Outlook Express the paid program, which Outlook Express are you referring too?  There's OE Classic and there's Outlook Express from Runas Xp that's the Outlook Express from XP rewritten to work with Windows 7, 8 & 10.

As far as the display setting you mentioned, this is the screen resolution setting and not display setting.  For screen resolution it takes some experimentation to get the setting that works best for someone.  For example, I use a 20 inch wide screen monitor at this house and a 17 inch monitor at the other house , but because of the different size monitors I have 2 different screen resolution settings for best all around viewing.  On the 20 inch monitor I have it set at 1280 by 800 and I don't recall what the other one is set at.

Another tip is to use Jaws16 if running the XP OE version rewritten to work with Windows 7, 8 and 10.  Jaws16 is the last version to have all the OE scripts.  Also, if the WinAmp window isn't minimizing it could be interfering with OE, but that's only a guess.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go dodgers!
No one has more to say than the woman who says she doesn't want to talk about it.

Subject: [jaws-users] Jaws Not Reading Outlook Express Messages

Hi,
A friend of mine is using Windows 7 and Outlook Express, the paid program, and the latest Jaws.
He thinks it is when he has WinAmp open, but I'm not sure that it is related to WinAmp.
But he opens a message and cannot read it.
If if he switches to an older version of Jaws, like Jaws 2018, he can read messages for a while, and he has the same problem.
If he switches back to 2019, he can read it.
If he unloads jaws and reloads it, he can read messages.
He did a jaws repair and that did not help.
He reinstalled Jaws and that did not help.
I'm wondering about his display settings, but Windows says that the 1280 by 1024 is the recommended settings.
So I'm not sure what might work.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Glenn

Re: Setting the Hotkey for Restarting JAWS

Rick Justice <ricjustice@...>

Hi Andy,
The reason this happens in earlier versions of Jaws, is that during
the update process, the original shortcuts are over-written.
I believe this was supposed to be corrected in the last update for Jaws.
An alternative for having a user assigned hotkey would be to pin Jaws to the
task bar, without assigning a hotkey.
Then, pressing the Windows key plus one of the number keys on the number row
corresponding to Jaws would start Jaws that version of Jaws.
I have all versions of Jaws on my systems set this way,
that way I have only a 2 key combination to press instead of 3.
I believe Mike B may have posted these steps to the list some time ago.

Microsoft Edge question.

Judy Jones

Hello Folks,

I am using Jaws 2019, tried Microsoft Edge in hopes that it is actually usable.  But Jaws loses speech and navigation, and seems pretty useless.  What am I missing, or do I need to employ some technique or settings that will help it to work?

Thanks.

For those who use Hi Criteria's Total Recorder?

Judy Jones

               Hello, All,

I hope this question isn’t too much off topic, as I do use Jaws 2019, as of today, but for a long time now, actually for years, I have been using High Criteria’s Total Recorder and love it.

Except for a while now, when recording, I am getting crackling and skips.

Have you all found a work-around or correction for this?

I did contact High Criteria support, and followed their instructions to run Total Recorder from the kernel version, but that didn’t work at all, and since then, I haven’t messed with it much.

It is great for editing and for converting to other audio formats, so will keep it around for that reason.

I have been doing any recording with Audacity, but would like to get back to Total Recorder.

Thanks very much for your collective wisdom.

Judy
