Mike,

At the risk of muddying things a little more, I don’t find the “forms mode” options in JAWS quick settings for Chrome. I’m guessing I made the change for Chrome in the main settings center, probably following similar steps to those you detailed. Right now, I don’t recall. I don’t know why these steps are available in quick settings for IE and not Chrome.

While I’m posting, I want to take issue with those who say there’s no real difference between IE and Chrome. Actually, Chrome’s menu structure is very different from IE and takes some getting used to. Firefox’s menus are different again, on top of the fact that Firefox periodically has accessibility problems. It’s true that the same navigation and other commands work across the board, which is a good thing. But the differing menu structures could be intimidating to a JAWS user who relies on the computer for certain limited purposes and doesn’t feel confident about learning new applications.

However, if Miriam is ever forced to switch to Chrome, she knows she has an army of thoughtful and willing advisors on this list.

Hi Miriam, Adrian & List,

I'm terribly sorry for what I stated yesterday that if you change the Forms mode settings in Settings Center default all applications that it would effect all browsers.  That was totally wrong and I do apologize.  Miriam, if you follow the easy to follow steps Adrian posted yesterday evening that will be the easiest way to change Forms mode settings.  Also, if you happen to need to use a different browser you can make the same Forms mode settings change in those browsers following the same steps.  Again my apologies for posting that wrong information.

Yes, that worked beautifully.

And yes, I’m beginning to think that I’d like to be able to go into forms mode when I choose, rather than automatically. But if I’m going to change, I need step by step directions like Rebecca gives me because

  1. I’m old and my mind isn’t as agile as it was and
  2. . Even when I was younger, I wasn’t good at this stuff.

When I had some vision, I’d print up emails with direction and read them step by step under my CCTV. Now, I read the emails, writing each step out in braille, and then I follow the directions, one step at a time.

I suppose because of the typical short term memory loss that happens when one ages, I can’t keep the steps in my mind.

Miriam, again, try pressing the PC cursor key twice quickly when this happens. I figured you had forms mode set to automatic. You shouldn’t have to change that setting if this is the only problem you’re experiencing with it.

For the record, I find having forms mode set to manual makes navigation easier, but each of us has our own experience to guide us. You’ll find the options in JAWS quick settings, JAWS key+v, while you’re in your browser’s window.

I had it set to turn the forms mode on automatically before, but this never happened before. Also, the person who was supposed to be helping me and who had to leave, told me it was best to remove the previous version because with Jaws 2019, I didn’t need the previous versions. I wasn’t comfortable with that, but I assumed, at that point, that he knew more than I did.

Hi Miriam,

It sounds like your, Forms Mode, is set to turn on automatically when you come to an edit field.  I don't know what setting you prefer, but if you only want the Forms Mode to open when you want it to, let the list know and someone can provide steps.  Or, steps can be provided to transfer your settings from your previous version into this newer Jaws version, if possible depending on which Jaws version you were running previously and if it's still installed.  Transferring your settings would probably be your best option, if possible.

There's a newsletter called Truthout and toward the end of each article, there's a kind of insert where the reader is told that he or she can receive a daily summary by filling out the following form. There's then a place for one's email address and , if I remember correctly, a sign up button. Before my calamitous move to Jaws 2019, I was able to just arrow through that form quickly and resume reading the rest of the article which continues underneath it. Now, I can't do that any longer. I'm stuck there. I can't go back above it and use insert 2 to just read everything. I can't get to the bottom of the article and arrow up. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Another issue, Jaws is set at intermediate verbosity, where it was before. I often copy articles and post them on the Blind Democracy list. I have a routine way of doing that. I've copied the article into the message. I then go to the top of the message where the title is, copy the title, and shift tab once to the subject line where I paste the title. I can still do that.
However, Jaws is not saying shift tab as it did before. It says nothing when I press those 2 keys in that situation.

Another thing it has stopped doing, it doesn't tell me that I'm in the original message after I've replied to a message. I can find out, but it almost never tells me that automatically.

Perhaps this is all just a punishment for still having a Windows 7 computer?

Good morning,

This has been occurring for a week now and it’s starting to irritate me

I’m using chrome 74, no matter the site I navigate to once I start reading using the down arrow, after a few lines, jaws just stops.  The only way I can start reading again is to tab and shift tab which causes me to lose my place.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

I use Google Chrome and I have the forms setting in the JAWS quick settings, insert-v, just as I do in Internet explorer.

When I switched to Chrome last year, I did not change anything and my semiauto setting applied whether in IE or Chrome.  It was set with the all applications, default setting so it should work in Chrome—by default.

I prefer the semiautomatic setting as a good compromise between automatic and manual.  I have passwords saved for several sites, and with manual I had to press enter twice—once to activate forms mode and again to confirm my login information.  I personally found this to be annoying.

So with semiauto, I just have to press enter once and I’m logged in.

Try the following to see if it will help:
1. While in Chrome press, Insert + V, for quick settings.
2. Down arrow to, Virtual cursor options and right arrow to open.
3. Down arrow to, General options, and right arrow to open.
4. Down arrow to, Page Refresh, and press the spacebar until Jaws reports, Off.
5. Now tab to, Okay, press enter to save the change and close.

If this doesn't help, write back and we'll see just how much more we can confuse you!  LOL  LOL
Just kidding, let us know if this works and if it doesn't we'll try something else.

Thankyou,

I understand your reticence to use these steps to solve your problem. As I aged my ability to remember steps that I want to take to solve a problem have been greatly reduced . At 80 I find that I have a problem of remembering just more than 3 things that I want to do, let alone 7 steps. So I feel your pain and don’t know what I would do without my family helping me do  any more than the simplest things. I too am worried sick that I might mess up and screw up my computer then where would I be? But I suppose what you may need to do is to print out these directions and have someone read them to you as you do each step. At least that is what I would have to do if it were me. I understand that that might not work for you. I used to use IE and didn’t want to change, but people kept telling me that it was the thing I should do, so, reluctantly , I switched to Chrome. Now since I really don’t do very many things I found that Chrome wasn’t that bad. It works well while downloading books from Bard. But I don’t like where it saves the favorites. With IE favorites were saved in a file in your documents folder. Not so with Chrome. It keeps favorites with in its self. When I worked that out, I found it not too troublesome. Now I know that this email has not gone very far to help you feel better about solving your problem. But since I have read so many of your emails and have exchanged a few comments with you  , I almost feel that you are my friend. And I just wanted to give you a little encouragement and understanding. I don’t know if this has helped even a little bit, but I hope it has. Hang in there, your email friend,

Hi Miriam,

Here are steps to turn off Forms Mode, or to say it correctly, put Forms Mode into Manual mode.

Try the following;

1. Insert + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard, to open the Settings Center.

2. Press, Control, Shift, + D, to open Jaws Settings Center Default All Applications.

3. Arrow down to Forms Mode, right arrow to open.

4. Arrow down 1 time, use the spacebar to toggle through these 3 choices auto, Semi Auto and Manual.  When you hear Jaws report, Manual, stop pressing the spacebar since this is the setting you want.

5. Arrow down 2 times to, Manual Forms Mode Settings, right arrow to open.

6. Arrow down 1 time to, Disable Forms Mode when a New page loads, & press the spacebar to check this box.

7. You can arrow down to Forms Mode Sounds, right arrow to open, & select sounds for when forms mode opens / closes if you desire.  If you would like steps for this let the list know and I'll type them up.

8. After you're finished making your changes tab to apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press, Enter, to save your changes & close.

If you are speaking of Google Chrome, I have had a few crashes with the latest update to Chrome using Jaws 2019. In the past, this has happened briefly with new Chrome updates and usually fixed by FS quickly so I would wait and see.

So after everyone's help and suggestions, when I returned home from my
audiologist's appointment, I used Adrian's directions, but I chose semi
automatic rather than manual, after having read Rebecca's latest message. I
was really afraid to try something that has become very unfamiliar, and I
suspected that probably, my setting in Jaws 2018 had been semi automatic.
After I used the quick settings, I went to a Truthout article and as I
suspected, I had no problem with getting past the sign up form in the middle
of each article.

Can I assume that this quick setting is permanent and will be there if the
computer is turned off and on again?

LeDon,

Well, I’m 81 and yes, short term memory loss is surely a problem which is magnified when one is blind. So I had 2 options. Luckily, I know how to read and write braille, a skill I learned in my twenties. I’m not expert at it, but it surely helps for taking notes and that’s what I’ve been doing with these directions. Six and more months ago, when I had useable vision, I printed up the email directions and read them under my CCTV. The other option is recording Jaws reading the email on my VR Stream. However, that involved getting all sorts of directions about how to control the recording volume and getting that set up was taking more time than the time taken up by writing a summary of the directions in braille. Unfortunately, my sighted children have little spare time and perhaps even less patience than time. (smile)

Mike,

This sounds rather complicated and if I mess up, I’ll be in a lot of trouble, especially with those sounds. I do appreciate these wonderful directions and I will hold onto them, but think some more before attempting them.

Hi Miriam,

Here are steps to turn off Forms Mode, or to say it correctly, put Forms Mode into Manual mode.

Try the following;

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go dodgers!

Hi Miriam,

The settings should stay the way you set them, but if by some chance they don't, reset it and reboot the computer to see what happens.  If they don't stick let the list know and we'll see what we can do to help.
