Did you need to reinstall all of the apps you have already? I am not interested in losing all my apps.

Hi Marvin,

Not sure! I would try the update again. Do you have any USB drives connected to the computer? If so, please remove them before doing this update again.

Thank you.

Hi, it popped up in windows update, then it installed, then got a file error warning and restart. Now stuck at 94 %, taking a long while. Started at 4:34 and now it is 7:50 pm my time in Adelaide. Is the last 6 % always slow.

And got a fast connection 5 or 6 mb per sec download.

Fiber to the home.

Hi.

You can get version 5.8 beta there. There are lots of sites that contain v5.666, which is still what I’m using on my Windows 10 machine.

If you like, I can pass you a sendspace link for either of those – not much trouble to upload.

Windows 10 1903 update

Jason White

I just brought my laptop up to date with Windows 1903, installed as an “in place” upgrade using the Media Creation Tool.

Note that 1903 was released today.

So far, it’s working well with JAWS. However, I haven’t had much opportunity to test it yet, as I’ve just finished the installation this evening.

Re: JAWS in System tray

michele thredgold

I have noticed similar behaviour; not with JAWS, but with my sd card reader. Sometimes, when I'm ready to eject my sd card, I'll bring up ssystem tray and preis s, in order to reach "safely remove hardware", but the option that comes up is 'speakers'. Other times, it comes up fine. I thought it might have to do with the presence of updates, but it happened yesterday, after an update for JAVA had been installed. Strange!

Cheers!

Michele

Vicki,
On numerous occasions Jaws does not show up in my Win 10 system tray list after startup. When this happens and if I need to get to it I shutdown JAWS and restart it with the run command. After that it is properly listed in the System tray list. Don't know why this is necessary sometimes. Just an idiosynchrosy.

Hi Vicki,

Try the following:
1. Open Settings with, Windows key + I, tab 1 time to, System, right arrow to Personalization and press enter.
2. Tab 1 time into the list of options, down arrow to, Taskbar, press enter, now tab several times to, Notification Area Select which icons appear on the Taskbar link and press enter.
3. Tab through the icons and press the spacebar so Jaws reports, On, on the icons that you want in the system tray.

Here are steps on rearranging the system tray icons if you like them to show in a certain order:
Always show all icons in the notification area must be turned off.
I just learned that the Badges option needs to be turned off in order to rearrange the System Tray icons and here are my corrected steps:
Settings and their state:
Lock the Taskbar button, On.

The next several options I have Unchecked / Off.

Taskbar location on screen Combo box, Bottom

Taskbar location on screen Combine taskbar buttons, Never
Here's how I rearrange the system tray icons running Windows 10 Pro Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.379) & all installed versions of Jaws.
1. Windows key + I, for Settings, tab 1 time to System, right arrow to Personalization, and press enter.
2. Navigate to, Taskbar and press enter.
3. Tab several times to, Show Badges on Taskbar''', and make sure this is, Off / unchecked.
4. Tab a few times to, Notification Area, Select which icons appear on the taskbar Link, and press enter.
5. Okay now to put the System Tray in the order you want it in. Tab through all the icons making a note of which ones you have checked / turned on because
you're going to uncheck all of them.
6. Uncheck all the icons. Now you will go through and check the icons in the order you want them in but keep in mind, they will appear in the reverse
order that they are checked. What I mean is, the 1st one yu check will be at the bottom of the list, the 2nd will be 2nd from the bottom, the 3rd will
be 3rd from the bottom etc. etc'''. After you're done open the system tray to make sure it's the way you want it and Alt + Fbled if it is.
Note: With the System Tray now arranged the way you want it, you can now turn, Badges, on if you prefer this setting to be on.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Go Dodgers!
I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

How do I get JAWS 2019 to show up in the system tray in Windows 10? I have JAWS checked to show up, but I remember in Windows 7 I also went into Notification Chevron, to customize, and there I could select for a program to either hide, always show or only show when there is a notification. I always had to set JAWS here to show as well.

I'm not able to do that in Windows 10, so where do I go to find those options for JAWS and other programs?

Thanks.

Hi,

I do web searches all the time in my spare time.

I did a search with start page, which is my home page, because I do so many searches.

I did a search for this before asking on the list, and I don't trust a lot of sites offering it up, that is why I asked here.

Hey Glen.

I don’t mean to be an ass, but while I have winamp and could probably upload the installer to sendspace or something, I don’t remember where I got it from – it was probably the result of a google search, at this point. I just did one and a whole bunch of results came up. I hate those “google is your friend” kind of guys, but, that’s how I find most of my stuff nowadays.

I just checked, too, and http://www.winamp.com is still active and contains the 5.8 beta that many users are currently running.

Unfortunately there seems to be s ecurity certificate expiration error. The download works though.

I had tried Winamp.org.
When that did not work, I searched for it, and not liking my results, wrote the list.

Hi David & All,

Here's a list of the layered keystrokes for Jaws 17 and later:
After holding down the Insert key then pressing the spacebar, do the following.
General Commands

The following are commands generally available in this key layer.

Commands Search feature = J.
Toggle Speech between full speech and less speech mode = S. s.
While in Less Speech mode, toggle between Speech on Demand or full mute = Shift + S.
Review recent history of what was spoken = H.
Clear previous history of what was recently spoken = Shift + H.
Copy to clipboard the text of what was recently spoken = Control + H.
ResearchIt feature = R.
View text currently on the clipboard = C.
Temporary Lock keyboard toggle on/off = L.
Temporary bypass using current User Settings and use JAWS factory default = Z.

Editors, Email, and Word Processors

The following commands are available in editable documents.
Text Analyzer On/Off = A.

Messaging Applications

Repeat last background notification from Skype = Shift + R.

Secondary Layers

The following keys activate a secondary layer. You can press Questionmark in any of these layers to show a help screen.
Mouse Echo layer = E.

Picture Smart layer = P.
Skype Desktop Application layer = Y.
Activate Table Navigation layer while in a table = T.

Yo Bro,

I can't answer your question but, to run Jaws in its default settings mode do the following:
In the latest version of Jaws 17 & in all later versions of Jaws, you can run these versions in their default mode by doing the following:
Press, Insert / Jaws ke + spacebar, then press the letter, Z.  This will run Jaws 17 latest & all Jaws later versions in default mode, & this keystroke is a toggle, so just invoke the keystroke again to run them with your settings back.

Take care.

Mike, I don't use either version, but for making a note of it for the
future: so to run versions 17 or 18 of JAWS, there's no more need to
type the command in the run dialog as in earlier versions if it is
needed to run JAWS in default mode?

Hi Mario,

Not exactly!  In all earlier versions starting with, J17.0.2619, & older would you have to use the Run dialogue, but only in the latest / most recent version of Jaws 17, J17.0.2727, & Jaws 18 can you use the layered keystroke command, Insert / Jaws key + Z, as a toggle for turning Jaws to run in default mode on & off.
Take care.

Re: Jaws and links

Van Lant, Robin

Madison,

It’s tough without seeing the articles, but here are the tricks I use for my newsletter emails.

  1. If available, click the link in the email that often says something like, “if this email is not appearing properly, click this link to view in a web browser.”
  2. See if the title of the article is also a link.  In our daily industry newsletter here at work, I find the news story title is a link that works better than the “Read more” link for whatever reason.
  3. Try using the JAWS F7 keystroke to pull up a list of links in the email and activate the link from there.  I realize this may not work well if you end up with this list of links that all say “read more” or such, but you may find is helpful.

Let us know if that helps.

Hi all,

I have a problem that’s driving me nuts. I am subscribed to a number of newsletters and most of them have links to click on so that you can either read eith the whole story or the rest of the story. My question is:

When I click on a link sometimes it opens but most of the time it doesn’t so I’m wondering, is there some setting or something that I need to change so that when ever I click on a link in one of these newsletters it will open in my browser? I’m using Jaws 15, Windows 7, Outlook 2013 and Internet Explorer. I really hope that someone can help me, lots of the time I end up having to delete the email because I can’t read the story/article that I want to read. Look forward to hearing back from anyone who can help me! Thanks

Madison
