Good observations there, Victor.

I can’t recall whether this feature ever worked perfectly for large numbers of files/folders or not, but I will take others’ word for it that it did at one time.

Hi Mike,

In my case, no matter how many files are in the folder, if it’s less then 24, then Jaws will pronounce the positional information correctly, but over 24 files in a folder, and I should re-state that, I do mean items, and not just files only, as it occurs for both, but yes, when the item count in a folder is larger than 24, then Jaws will report a number lower than 24, with the total number of files being 24.

Once or twice, the item count has climbed to 33, but those are few and far between.  The state of the window doesn’t make a difference either, because no matter what, maximized or restored, the count will always be the same.

I’ve learned to deal with it by using the read status line command of insert+page down, but sometimes it would be nice if this feature would work like in the old days of Jaws.

Hi Rebecca,

Try the following to see if it'll help with item count:

1. Open the Settings Center default all applications.

2. Navigate to Speech Verboscity closed and right arrow to open.

3. Arrow down to, Configure Verboscity Levels, closed and right arrow to open.

4. Press the spacebar on your Verboscity level to open and make sure, Announce Position and Count when navigating in lists, is checked, Item number, is checked and Position information is checked.

5. Tab to, Okay, press the spacebar and tab to, Okay, press enter to save and close.

Yes, you can check the status line as you suggest to get the total number of files in a folder.  But sometimes you might want to know that a file was 150 of 300, for example, if you were trying to divide files and had only limited space left, as on a nearly full thumb drive.  Of course you could also select files and do a size check of them all under properties, but the count is just a quick way to “guesstimate” what could go where.

Also, not a criticism, but those of us who used Window-Eyes had this information at our fingertips as we arrowed down through the file or folder list.

File name, 4 of 69, file name 47 of 69, etc. We did not have to read the current line to get it.  If you didn’t want or need the count, you just arrowed through the list quickly, pressed the first letter of the file name you wanted, or just did a search.  So it was never a verbosity issue.  Narrator gives the count both in terms of the position in what’s on the screen and the position in the total number of files in the folder.

Why not just check the status line like I suggested?

Your file count should be there, reported accurately by windows, not JAWS, which – ok, I don’t know how it gets the information re. list views, but again I would suggest that it might have trouble seeing more than what’s already being displayed at times. I’d only be theorising though. However it is a fact that jAWS does not always accurately report the number of items. We should just do what sighted people do though, in this case.

Re: looking for two Excel keystrokes -- if they exist

Brian Lee

Hello Robin,

If you are only using arrow keys then you are not selecting but simply navigating.  If you select by using the shift key with arrow keys or by using other selecting keystrokes then the status bar should give you the count.  When you select the cells the status bar gives other things like the average and sum of the selected range of cells along with the number of cells selected.  If this isn’t happening then use F6 to go to the status bar, press either the application key of shift with F10, and use down arrow to the “Count” item and see if it is checked.  If it isn’t checked then use enter key to add it to the status bar.  If it is checked then just escape out of the menu and use F6 to go back to the worksheet.  The items in the menu include one for “Count” and one for “numeric count.”  The “Numeric count” gives the number of cells that contain only numbers and the “Count” should give the actual number for the cells you select.

You can use JAWS key with C to get the cell coordinates.  JAWS key with tab should give you the name of the worksheet, the contents of the current cell and the cell coordinates.

Take care.

There are two things I miss from using Window Eyes with Excel.  I’m wondering if an equivalent exists in JAWS.

First, Is there a way, other than to arrow away and back, to have JAWS announce the current cell coordinates?  This is particularly helpful when in the middle of typing a formula and I need to recall the current cell I’m in.

Second, I sometimes need to count a subset of rows or columns in a file.  For example, today I was looking at a list of all employees and I just needed to count out the number in a particular team.  With Window Eyes, I would start at the first cell and arrow down till the last one.  By default, Window Eyes would announce the number of columns or cells selected, depending on which way I was moving.  Is there some way to ask JAWS how many rows, columns or cells are currently highlighted?  I tried reading the status line, but that didn’t’ seem to work.

Using JAWS 2019 latest build with Windows 10 and Excel 2016.

See if turning Audio Ducking on in the Settings Center will help.  To do this:

1. Open the Settings Center with the keystroke, Insert / Jaws key + 6, on the number row, and press, Control, Shift + D, to open the Settings Center default all applications.
2. Down arrow to, User, and right arrow to open.
3. Down arrow to, Lower audio volume of programs when Jaws speaks, and press the spacebar to check this box.
4. Tab to, Okay, and press enter to save and close.

Something else you could try is exporting the settings on the 1 computer where everything works correctly and importing the settings on the other computer.

Hi Chris,

If you press the alt+V keystroke, you’ll land on the view ribbon.  Once you do, press the left arrow twice to get to the change options for file views, search etc. and press enter twice.

Once done, you’ll land on the file options dialog box.  control+tab to the view menu, then tab twice to get to the list of options.

Arrow down to Show Status bar, or simply press the letter S until you hear this option.  The setting should be on, but if you hear that it’s off, press your spacebar to switch it to on,

Not sure about everyone else, but I always tab to the apply button, press the spacebar, then shift+tab to the ok button, and press enter.

At this point, the insert+page down command to read the status bar should activate.

Let us know if you have any issues.

The insert+page down command should work every time in file explorer.

It should state the number of items in the window, and how many items are selected.

The only time the read status bar does not work is in Windows Live Mail, where it only reads a line in the message currently viewed in the preview pane, but for file explorer, the insert+page down command works flawlessly.

Is it possible you do not have the status bar turned on?

I know I could probably use another program to take a photo and use
the Jaws cursor on that, but I would prefer to avoid that extra part.
Otherwise, does anyone know how I can get the OB to find my scanner?
Thanks.

Hi. I might have something on my computer at home. I’ll check this evening. If I can find it I’ll send you a drop box link to download it.

Hi Mike,

I’ve always wondered about Audacity. Would you know if there’s a good blind tutorial out there; on how to use Audacity with JAWS? I did download the latest version of Audacity and ran through some of the menus, to get a feel for it, but I didn’t understand most of it.

So I’d appreciate it if someone could direct me to a good source for learning how to use this program, with JAWS.

BTW: I’m running W7, J 18 and I think, IE11.

The latest version of Audacity, an open source multi-track audio editor, now works well with the Narrator screen reader. As with previous versions, Audacity also works well with Jaws and NVDA.
Here's a link to Audacity's web site:
https://www.audacityteam.org/
A direct link to the installer of Audacity 2.3.2 is:
https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html?dwl=audacity-win-2.3.2.exe

For previous versions of Audacity, I've written guides to Audacity which were written specifically for Jaws users. However my guide for Audacity 2.3.2 is written for users of all of the three screen readers, Jaws, NVDA, and Narrator, and is available here:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.3.2-Guide.html

The introduction of the guide gives details of how to subscribe to the Audacity4Blind mailing list.

Re: File counting with JAWS

Chris

Hello Victor,

I don’t seem to get anything when I press insert and the page down button. I am using JAWS 2019 and windows 10. What do I need to do to turn on the status bar?

The insert+page down command should work every time in file explorer.

It should state the number of items in the window, and how many items are selected.

The only time the read status bar does not work is in Windows Live Mail, where it only reads a line in the message currently viewed in the preview pane, but for file explorer, the insert+page down command works flawlessly.

Is it possible you do not have the status bar turned on?

Sorry for sounding like a broken record, but I honestly can’t understand why you guys don’t just press insert-pgdn. Does it not work for you as it does on my machine?

I can’t seem to get this process to work, though, when in a sub-folder view within one of my major folders.

Just to be sure, do I invoke the Alt V followed by L and the enter sequence once the sub-folder has been opened?

Hi, the only way I've found to get an accurate file count is,

1, navigate to documents press enter,

you will hear not selected and then an untrue number,

2, press, alt+v=view,

3, l=list,

now press enter or the spacebar.

it, will stay true as long as the window stays open.

for some unknown reason the list feature doesn't stay checked.

Chris,

You make complete sense. It’s a recognized flaw in JAWS. In some areas, it can count files accurately (think of email messages) but not in others. Rebecca, a contributor to this list, has pointed out that you can get the counts you need by bringing up Narrator. Remember, you open and close Narrator with control-Windows key-enter.

Hello All,

I am sorry, to ask for help with file counting with JAWS, as I have asked before, and cannot find the response I got before.

This is a recurring problem, but not all the time. I have a number of files either in a folder, or on a different drive. But the count will only go up to 33 even if there is over 100. What are the steps to get a full count?

I hope this makes some sort of sense to someone.

Regards

Chris
