Hi Michael,
When this problem occurs, how many programs or windows do you have open?
Also, how much ram is installed on your system?

Hi Tom i am not sure if your sound issue is same as mine.

I have had an issue off and on for about 2 years now on only 2 of my
cheaper Laptops.

My issue is out of the blue jaws will be talking fine then all of a
sudden jaws witll get really reverby and little un responsive.

And i need to do a restart of my computer and the sound is all back to
normal.

But my issue can happen 3 times in half hour.

Or it may not stuff up for days.

2 years ago i did a total reinstalled windows 10 on 1 machine and it
fixed it for ages.

Then few months back it started up again.

Each time this happens i have found under my reliability history in win
10 tells me their was a error saying windows host process has stopped
working or not responding and had to close.

I have had stacks of thoes errors come up.

Most reports have been reported to Microsoft but no fixes.

And i have reinstalled the realteck audio drivers lots of times by
uninstalling drivers under devices.

So i am frustrated as well.

I have 3 dearer laptops with Realteck sound cards and never had a
problem with them.

I feel its something to do with the drivers.

Cheers Michael.

The problem was fixed by uninstalling the Windows generic sound card

file from Mike Mote.

Unfortunately, my problem has returned, but in a different form.

My jaws speech is slightly distorted in the laptop speakers, and when
I use headphones, I get stereo sound with a slight reverberation,
rather than Jaws being in the center of the headphones.

Does anyone have any suggestions for solving this latest issue?

I’m using the latest build of Jaws 2019.

Hi Tom,

Yes there is. Try the following:

1. From the desktop press, Windows key + R, to open the Run dialogue and
type in, control panel, and press enter.

2. Press the letter, S, to get to, Sound link, and press enter.

3. You should be on the, Playback page, so press the spacebar on the
Realtech option to make sure it's selected, now tab to, properties, and
press enter.

4. Now, Control + Tab, to the, Enhancements page. If the environment
choices are there you should be in a list of 6 checkboxes. The 1st one
being Environment which should be checked and if it isn't then the
environment choices aren't activated or don't exist. If it's there, but not
checked, check this box and tab 1 time. You should be in a list of different
sound effects. Arrow up / down and as you go from one to another you should
hear the differences. I don't like any reverberation so I use the living
room sound effect. After you make your choice tab to, Okay, press the
spacebar and you will be back on the, properties button, so tab to, Okay,
and press enter to save and close. If you still have my number you can
call.

Hi Tom,

When you installed the factory driver it could have put Environment sounds
like living room, ballpark or padded cell! LOL Anyways, in some these
environment sounds there's a lot of reverberation. If the environment
setting didn't change you'll probably need to reinstall the driver Mr. Mote
provided to you.

No, you're not missing anything.  I've ran the Realtech driver on one of our computers and it didn't install the enhancements or equalizer package but, it did make Realtech sound better.  The Enhancement page would be before the Advanced page in the Control + Tab order.

Hi Brian,
Maybe it's because I opened it incorrectly, but the play option is not available.
I did find the bookmark option and used it already.
What I did was to do control + O and pasted in a path to one of the files in the book's folder with an .OPF extension.
That seemed to work, other than no other options being available in the menus.
Thanks.

Hello Glenn,

FS Reader 3.0 works on DAISY files.  A shortcut might be on your computer’s desktop or you can find it in the All Apps list under FS Reader folder.  Otherwise, the executable can be found in
C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\FSReader\3.0.

You can use the normal CTRL+O command when the program opens to browse to the file to open.  When in the file you can use CTRL P to play or pause either the human speech or the synthesized speech used in the file creation.  Use comma to advance and period to go back in the playback, and you can use CTRL with page up and page down keys to increase or decrease speech rate.  You can also read the file with your keyboard and JAWS speech.  Use F6 to go between the window with the current information in it and the list of elements like chapters, parts, headings, etc.  There is a bookmarking capability in a Bookmarks menu.  CTRL+B to add a bookmark and CTRL+K to list them.  When using JAWS you can use quick navigation keys.

Hi,

I just downloaded a book from archive.org, and it came in two formats, DAISY and abbyy.GZ.

I used 7Zip on both of them.

I could put the DAISY in a special player that we can use, but I would prefer to read it on the computer.

Didn't Jaws used to come with some software for DAISY books?

Book Writing Software

Glenn / Lenny

Hi All,
Does anyone know of any free or almost free book writing software that works with Jaws?
I'm looking for software that keeps track of characters you create and the plot and other such details.
I can imagine losing track of details while writing.

The GZ file extracted to an XML file, and it seems to lock up whatever I open it with.

Didn't Jaws used to come with some software for DAISY books?

I don't much like Send Space either but it has little to do with the browser I'm using but that I don't much care for how their site works or doesn't work.

With Chrome running open the Chrome settings Center and navigate to,Web / HTML / PDFs closed, right arrow to open, down arrow to, Heading and Frames closed, right arrow to open, and in here are a couple of Fram settings you can change to see if it'll help.  If you make any changes tab to, Okay, press enter to save and close.

Hi Tom,

When you installed the factory driver it could have put Environment sounds like living room, ballpark or padded cell! LOL Anyways, in some these environment sounds there's a lot of reverberation. If the environment setting didn't change you'll probably need to reinstall the driver Mr. Mote provided to you.

Hello, everyone.

You may recall that last week, I had a Jaws distorted speech problem with my Dell Windows 10 computer.

The problem was fixed by uninstalling the Windows generic sound card driver and replacing it with a realtech driver thanks to an executable file from Mike Mote.

Unfortunately, my problem has returned, but in a different form.

My jaws speech is slightly distorted in the laptop speakers, and when I use headphones, I get stereo sound with a slight reverberation, rather than Jaws being in the center of the headphones.

Does anyone have any suggestions for solving this latest issue?

I’m using the latest build of Jaws 2019.

Thanks as always.

Hi Tom,

Yes there is.  Try the following:
1. From the desktop press, Windows key + R, to open the Run dialogue and type in, control panel, and press enter.
2. Press the letter, S, to get to, Sound link, and press enter.
3. You should be on the, Playback page, so press the spacebar on the Realtech option to make sure it's selected, now tab to, properties, and press enter.
4. Now, Control + Tab, to the, Enhancements page.  If the environment choices are there you should be in a list of 6 checkboxes.  The 1st one being Environment which should be checked and if it isn't then the environment choices aren't activated or don't exist.  If it's there, but not checked, check this box and tab 1 time.  You should be in a list of different sound effects.  Arrow up / down and as you go from one to another you should hear the differences.  I don't like any reverberation so I use the living room sound effect.  After you make your choice tab to, Okay, press the spacebar and you will be back on the, properties button, so tab to, Okay, and press enter to save and close.  If you still have my number you can call.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go Dodgers!

It is called, just read!
Just press the Alt to open the virticle menu, go to more sub menu, and go to extensions.
You can go to the store on that page, and just type in Just Read, and that extension will come right up.
Just have that install to Chrome, go back to the extensions page, and make sure that is activated in your list of extensions that you have on Chrome!
It does indeed work great with CTRL+Shift+L!
I hope that helps.

Hi, in chrome Canary there is a reader mode you have to enable it first.   After this is done is there a keyboard short cut to enable it?    The article is below

The desktop version of Google Chrome’s browser is getting a reader mode, which can be used to strip out a page’s unnecessary background clutter to make an article easier to read. ZDNet notes that the feature launched today in Chrome’s experimental Canary release, and it should make its way to more stable versions of the browser in the future.

Reader modes have become a standard browser feature. Safari added its reader mode in 2010, and Firefox and Microsoft’s Edge browser have had one since at least 2015. All three allow you to change the color of the background of the page and adjust the font size to whatever is most comfortable to read.

The new reader mode isn’t entirely new for Chrome. It’s existed for a while in the Android version of the app where it’s called “Simplified view,” and it can be turned on from the browser’s accessibility menu. The desktop version’s reader mode is a renamed port of this accessibility option, as noted in a bug report that was spotted back in February.

If you want to enable the new functionality, then you’ll need to use an up-to-date version of Chrome’s experimental Canary release. Head over to “chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode” toggle the feature on, and restart your browser. You can then put a page into reader mode by clicking the settings button on the top right of the browser and selecting “Distill page.”

What's the difference between the Cnary and regular versions of Chrome?  Why would the Canary version be chosen over the regular version of Chrome?  How does someone get the Canary version?

No mike that doesn’t help.  In chrome Canary Chrome built in their own reader view.

Hi Dennis,

See if this helps:

From: David Moore

It is called, just read!
Just press the Alt to open the virticle menu, go to more sub menu, and go to extensions.
You can go to the store on that page, and just type in Just Read, and that extension will come right up.
Just have that install to Chrome, go back to the extensions page, and make sure that is activated in your list of extensions that you have on Chrome!
It does indeed work great with CTRL+Shift+L!
I hope that helps.
Please ask again, if that doesn’t work!

Subject: [jaws-users] How to activate Chrome's new reader mode?

Mike:

Is there a way to change the environment sounds?

I’d almost like to try to do that before uninstalling and re-installing everything, since the problem will likely recur with future updates.

If not, I’ll certainly do as you suggest.

Hi Tom,

When you installed the factory driver it could have put Environment sounds like living room, ballpark or padded cell!  LOL  Anyways, in some these environment sounds there's a lot of reverberation.  If the environment setting didn't change you'll probably need to reinstall the driver Mr. Mote provided to you.

I don’t know, but I’d sure like to do that because this issue is getting anoying.

This is something Microsoft really needs to address, in my opinion.

Can you set your windows update to only do critical updates?

I'm not sure if that is an available option in 10.

No, believe me, my power cord is in all the way.

I just got some sighted assistance, and some sort of an intel driver was updated yesterday evening, which is when the problem recurred.

I’m not sure what to do here, short of uninstalling the new driver again, and re-installing the realtech driver.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sometimes when my power cord is not in the socket all the way I get a slurred sound when jaws speaks.

Don’t know if that is what you’re referring to.

Subject: [jaws-users] Jaws Distorted Speech Problem Has Returned
