Hi all, I have always used the updater in jaws for doing updates with no

issues. I also normally wait until I get the CD before installing new versions. By waiting I find the major bugs are normally sorted out before I get my version and it also saves my downloads. I am currently on Jaws 2018 but have downloaded 2019 since I don't think we get the CD's anymore. Just waiting for a time when I don't need my computer to do the upgrade. From Shaz.

I have fast downloads. I don't know if installing the download is like doing the updates in the updates. My friend could scan the thing okay though. -----Original Message----- From: jaws-users-list@groups.io [mailto:jaws-users-list@groups.io] On Behalf Of Mike B Sent: March 19, 2019 8:16 AM To: jaws-users-list@groups.io Subject: Re: [jaws-users] PDF and OCR Hi Cheryl, Consider this for a moment. Depending on your download speed it only takes a few seconds to download the installer and it's yours, but when you try downloading / installing it through the updating feature it can take a minute or 2, maybe more. On another note this could be one of those files that just can't be recognized or OCR'd. If you would like, you could email this file to me and I can try scanning it to see if it's the file or your version of Jaws, then you'll know if you need to call FS to have them fix your problem or not. Okay. I'm just afraid something will go wrong with the installer and if something goes wrong and the situation is worse, then that wouldn't be good. Anyway, just wonder why they have the updates if people don't recommend them. -----Original Message----- From: jaws-users-list@groups.io [mailto:jaws-users-list@groups.io] On Behalf Of Mike B Sent: March 18, 2019 11:27 PM To: jaws-users-list@groups.io Subject: Re: [jaws-users] PDF and OCR Hi Cheryl, I understand your not wanting to try something new, believe me, I truly understand! Many people on this list can attest to this as well as many people on this list can attest to having to repair Jaws after using the updating feature you're using. If you want to hear why call them and ask them. You're having a problem so, what's going to hurt by trying something a little different. When one thing doesn't work in other circumstances don't you try something different? I'm not trying to be argumentative, just suggesting an alternative. If you have Openbook installed you can use Openbook's Freedom Import Printer to scan the file as well. To do it OB trythe following. 1. Open the file in question and press the print command, Control + P. 2. When the print dialogue opens navigate to the, Freedom Import Printer, option and press enter. 3. Give OB a little time to OCR the file and OB will come up talking and processing the file, then you can save it in your format of the choices given. Take care. Mike. Sennt from my iBarstool. Using the update option from within Jaws has caused many others problems and that's why Freedom Scientific recommends updating by downloading the installer executable file and installing it using the downloaded installer. http://jaws2019.vfo.digital/2019.1903.47.400/D641CB0D-C1B9-4E8B-8FCD-7978C33 0F6DD/J2019.1903.47-any.exe Take care. There is no recognize. I tried both F10 and the applications key. I went to the file. There is no recognize. By selecting the file, do you mean just highlighting the file or opening the file? Well, it's still not working. It won't work. If only people would either send stuff in Word or send it as a PDF that is not just a picture, things would be great. -----Original Message----- From: jaws-users-list@groups.io [mailto:jaws-users-list@groups.io] On Behalf Of James Malone Sent: March 18, 2019 7:53 PM To: jaws-users-list@groups.io Subject: Re: [jaws-users] PDF and OCR Hi Cheryl, I posted this on the list last week, because I had the same question. Tec support told me that in order for this to work with Jaws, you have to select the PDF file, then do a applications key or press F10. Arrow down to Recognize with Jaws then press enter. Jaws will give you the "please wait" and your document will load up. Hope this helps. I think there was a message about this, but must have missed it. Anyway, when I get a document and it says empty document and I open OCR, it will say OCR component is not installed. Why does it say that? How do I get OCR to read PDF files? It must be a hard process.
