Re: Backing Up External Hard Drive

Hey Jerry.

If you “cut”, it will disappear. If you “copy”, it won’t. If you hit ctrl-x instead of ctrl-c, the window will say “moving _____ items”, and if you hit ctrl-c, it will say “copying”. So, if you want to keep the stuff on the source drive, remember not to use cut!

JM:

Sorry about that. My next question was this.

After doing a cut and paste from one device to another, is the file/folder from the originating device supposed to disappear after the transfer is completed to the destination drive?

Thanks.

Not sure if you can use the classic Windows Backup and Restore programme for exteranl drives – but I wouldn’t be surprised.

See this page for lots of stuff about built-in Windows backup solutions.

Thanks. I know that in some instances, there is an option for backing up data; but I am not certain as to whether this relates only to the hard drive in the device/laptop itself. Thanks again.

Since it’s an external drive, all I’d do is open the drive in file explorer, open the location you want to copy to in another window, go to the external, hit ctrl-a, and then ctrl-c in the other window.

This will copy everything. If you’re looking for an automatic/synchronised/scheduled regular backup though, you’d be best finding another method.

Afternoon all.

Using JAWS 2018 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop, can anyone give me instructions for backing up data from my IOmega external hard drive to another storage device? Thanks in advance, and apologies if I have asked this previously.

Jerry
