Hi Nate & All,

Well this original query wasn't about Windows 7 or 10, it was about Windows 8 & Jaws 17!  Here it is:

From: ...

What would prevent me from closing windows, I can not seem to close outlook, or my document or my downloads or any other window I have open?

I probably need to update, running jaws 17 on  a windows 8 machine

Please, can we get back to the original question?  Also, if the original poster would reply to let the list know if any of the keystroke suggestions did any good would help as well!

Hello,

Interesting to see the ongoing dialog surrounding this. I would still like the original posters question to be answered. Neither control/W or alt/F4 seem to be working. I thought that a JAWS repair  could be a possibility, checking for a windows ten update or role back, or even unloading JAWS and trying to close with narrator only. Does anyone else have a possible solution aside of continuing the control/w, debate?

Which folders, Glenn? I wouldn’t care except right now this looks like misinformation. The examples several of us have given you are folders where control-w doesn’t work, so which folders does it work with? I’d be happy to learn that it does work on some folders. The context would help.

Yes, I tried it with WinMail, and it does not work for that, but as someone pointed out, it works for some eMail clients.

It does work for folders too.

I tried it (Control + W) just now on an outlook message and outlook and it did not work. FYI.

Control + W closes almost everything.

Yes, control-w is the Word command to close a document, not the actual program.  An easy way to remember the difference perhaps is to think of the document you’re working on as the active window—hence control-w will close that window.

Control-f4 is yet another way to close a document, not the program.

Dave is correct. For the record, I just confirmed by using control-w to close a Word document, but after that it wouldn’t close the program. Likewise, it won’t close Outlook.

Yes, but does it actually close the window with the program, such as MS-Word, MS-Excel, etc. so as to regain the desktop -- I don't think so. And that's what the original sender was having trouble with.

It closes documents and folders.

It does not close eMail messages though.

Don't bother. It does not close programs. Only use I know is to close tabs in Web browsers.

Nope! Never used Control + W to close Window, speaking of myself of course. I will try it next time when the problem reappears. Thanks Glenn.

Hi Dave,

Yup, sometimes neither ALT + F4 nor Control + F4 works …

Very unlikely JAWS. JAWS would not be preventing access to a document. Check your administrator privileges.

Hi Robert,

What I do when I hear that is shift tab until I hear one of the files in my document.

Patti

Hey y’all yet another question that has been bugging the beejeebers out of me lately.

First thing in the morning, no other time usually, I open outlook to check mail and then documents to start posting stuff.

Many times After retrieving what I need from documents and mailing them off, I return to documents using the alt and tab keys, it says unavailable. I then have to hit alt F4 to shut it down and start again.

This can be very frustrating when you have things to do and need to move quickly…any suggestions or just another thing I have to learn to live with inside of this blindness stuff?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice.

Robert
