I believe control windows f4 will close them as well.

Ctrl+windows+d creates an additional desktop, which would number
itself desktop2. Repeating the keystroke would give you desktop3.
Ctrl+windows+left arrow moves to a lower numbered desktop, and
ctrl+windows+right arrow moves to a higher number.

I believe the extra desktops disappear when you reboot, but I'm not sure
about that.
