Re: JAWS 2019 saying 'blank' when there are words on the screen

Jim Pursley

I too am experiencing some anomalies with J2019.  I am awaiting the next build to see if they are fixed.  Fortunately, I have not had Tom's problem - JAWS not reading text when it's plainly there.  This said, could the text have been scanned images, which of course would not read.  You try JAWS OCR or Open Book?  Sorry if I am repeating a suggestion that is part of this thread.  I came in a bit late.

J2019 seems to have corrected a long standing issue I had with Adobe Reader DC - in most docs skipping to prior lines - or even back to the top.  I solved by copying to notepad but lost links and table heads that way.

JAWS is much more powerful than it was when I first started with JAWS 4 or 5 but so is the internet.

And so, like Adrian recently said, we must be flexible and have other tools on hand, including pprior JAWS versions and multiple browsers.

I agree, in this case calling would only lead to frustration.

I already indicated that others have had my problem.

This is why I'm reluctant to call Jaws Tech support, because the issue apparently is not just unique to me.

Tom, you might forward your earlier message to them with a note that you've heard from me and others on this list that this problem is not unique to you. In my case, the matter has been escalated.

I also find that Jaws 2019does not always read well when I'm composing Outlook e-mails and Word documents.

Sometimes, Jaws skips lines, or repeats the same line.

I filed a formal report to FS about this. They said they couldn't help me directly, and asked me to call FS Tech Support for help.

I simply haven't gotten to call them yet, because I'm now totally involved in setting up a new Windows 10 computer.

Ann, I've just posted a reply to Mike rogers that is what I'd also say to you. I find this kind of problem, especially in Word 2016, extremely disruptive.

Sometimes, certainly not always, when I open a document or enter a new screen, JAWS says 'blank, blank, blank" as I arrow down. I cannot select the text on the screen. Both Narrator and NVDA will read the text, but until I unload/reload JAWS, nada. Is this a problem for anyone else? Is there a setting to change. It has happened with Firefox, with Research It, with Word. But only intermittently, and I do know how to work around it.
Is there a way to prevent this not very interesting event?

Thx,

Ann
