Re: Need help wiping out a laptop

David Ferrin

I have an external USB 3.5 floppy drive in the other room. Even these days it comes in handy once in a while.

I don't recall the brand or anything, but it does work on all of my systems.

Matthew, you are dating yourself my friend. LOL.
3.5 floppies. I don't 'think you can get a drive for those things anymore,
can you?
I have a few floppies that I'd like to copy onto my hard drive, but I don't
know if external 3.5's exist.

Not to start an off topic here, but do you remember the
died-before-they-got-off-the-table 2.88 floppies?
Just like the Digital Cassettes they never stood a chance.

Hi, Jeff. DBAN can be obtained for free from (I think). Been a while since I downloaded a copy. Otherwise, Google it, and you should find it. You will need some sighted assistance at boot-up; you need to burn a CD and copy files to it, or use a floppy 3.5-inch. I did this with two computers I needed to dispose of, and even the operating system went away. Good stuff. Cleans according to military/DOD specs.--Matthew Chao

What is DBAN and where can one get it? I have a couple of old laptops that I want to retire and dispose of, but I want to be sure all personal data has been removed from them. Both laptops run Vista.

Can I accomplish this data cleansing without sighted assistance using JAWS?

Like the subject says, I need to set up this other laptop like some what new again and have it as a backup laptop.

Once, I install jaws the rest is no worries!

But, Im not sure on how to completely wipe it out correctly cause jaws is not working?

Im also trying to avoid a trip to best buy geek squad.

Thank you

There is no better symbol for the purpose we serve than the emblem every Marine earns: the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. The eagle represents the proud nation we defend. It stands at the ready with our coastlines in sight and the entire world within reach of its outstretched wings. The globe represents our worldwide presence. The anchor points both to the Marine Corps' naval heritage and its ability to access any coastline in the world. Together, the eagle, globe and anchor symbolize our commitment to defend our nationin the air, on land and at sea.
