Re: Is it worth learning the adaptations for a laptop or instead buy an external keyboard with a numpad?

Oh! Shows how much I know hahaha! Sounds like I had it all backwards. I’ve been so conditioned into thinking it needed a TV.
But, when you think of it, We do this all the time with our cell phones or PC or tablet by plugging the speaker into the headphone jack or via Bluetooth.

Hey Judy, If you use the remote for the box, you don't need a TV at all. The remote changes the box, and the TV is just a dumb receiver. Of course there are now smart TVs that will connect to your router and allow you to do netflix and the like, but you can do that without a TV too. Glenn

This is very interesting.
So, if you had the cable box, for instance, and a speaker hooked into the box, how would you change the channels? I thought the remote had to interact with the TV, and the box was what brought in the signal. This is good education for me.

The screen doesn't even need to work to have Jaws work. On desktops, you can unplug the video cable to the monitor and Jaws will still work. It's like a TV, people think that they need a TV to watch TV if they aren't benefiting from a picture. But with cable/satellite boxes, you can plug in speakers and disconnect the TV, or not have a TV at all. If you are using HDMI, your audio may be going to a monitor with speakers though, in which case, you would get the audio through the sound output on the computer. Glenn

If you turn off the laptop monitor. Or have it to turn itself off after a set amount of minutes, will that effect the performance of the screen reader? Or does the screen readers require the monitor to be on to work satisfactorily. I would love to be able to turn off my lap top monitor, as I use to turn off my desk top monitor. But, should my screen reader not work, when I did this, how would any sighted person assist to turn it back on again. If the Jaws should fail to work.
