Re: Jaws and PDFs

Glenn / Lenny

I downloaded the file and it opened fine in FireFox.
Since I reinstalled Windows recently, I haven't yet gotten Adobe installed, that is why I read it in FireFox.

Hi Madison,
I hate to tell you this, but you were worried for nothing.
It’s a problem with the file, not your computer.
You might want to let the owners of the site know this.

Hi all,

I’ll send you the link to the PDF:

I was able to read it before, but as of yesterday now I can’t read it. I don’t know why, I haven’t made any changes to my computer. Look forward to hearing back from you guys! Thanks

It sounds as if the online dog grooming course is using image PDF files. I suspect they contain many photos and those creating the PDF files used didn't bother to see that they contained editable text that could be searched and read by screen readers. Glenn has already discussed some of the options for running the pdf files through OCR but if you need someone to confirm that they are image PDFs, send us a link to the site where they are so we can do so.

Hi Glenn and all,

Reading the PDF is the problem though. If it’s one that Jaws will read then interacting with the PDF isn’t a problem. The only thing that I ever do with a PDF is read them anyway, most of the PDFs that I look at I only read once, so I never save them anyway. I think that I already have Adobe DC, is there some way that I can check? Also, Glenn can you email me privately please (about the dog groomer and NFB thing)? My email is:

Look forward to hearing back from you! Thanks

Hi Madison,

If it is based on just your Blindness, then whoever told you that you can't be a dog groomer is totally wrong.

The NFB has a department that connects people in a field that they are working in so that person can help you.

But on your question, there are a lot of ways to read a PDF.

I'd say reading it is the easiest part, but sometimes interacting with a PDF can be tricky with Jaws.

You can use Adobe DC or you can use Open Book on a PDF, or you can use Jaws convenient OCR.  A lot of PDF files can be saved to txt in Adobe's file menu.

Subject: [jaws-users] Jaws and PDFs

Hi all,
I'm really hoping that someone on this list can please help me. This is
something that's been bugging me for a while, but now I'm really hoping that
I can get this fixed. Is there some way to get Jaws to read all PDFs? The
reason that I ask is because my career goal is to become a professional dog
groomer (even though most people don't think that I can), but anyway there's
an online dog grooming course that I really want to take. I was looking at
it again today and there was a link to a sample lesion which once I opened
it Jaws wouldn't read it. I know that this isn't a good sign, if I can't
read the sample lesion then I won't be able to do the course (it's all
online). Part of the problem is that I don't know whether or not Jaws will
read a PDF until I open it. I really hope that someone can help me, I'm
using Jaws 15, Windows 7, and I don't know what version of Adobe I have.
Look forward to hearing back from anyone who can help! Thanks
