SOTAbeams contest console for ICOM
Ronald Baran
Hello Fellow 7K-ers,
Page 135 of the manual there is a diagram of an external keypad that activates the contents of voice memories. Saw this: https://www.sotabeams.co.uk/contestconsole-switching-unit-for-icom-radios/ The unite seems to be compatible with most ICOM radios but needs a patch OPC 589 for the 7000. Anybody with experience and/or comments about this console? Punching the F1, CQ memory started to get old during Illinois QSO Party. Seldom work SSB so this feature certainly saved my voice. 73, Ron W9XS

Made my own for a few bucks. Just follow the diagram in the manual. Works like a charm. Only accesses the 4 memories, though.

I also have an IC-765. Does anyone know whether that radio is compatible with the contest console?

Thanks Carl,
My initial plan was exactly what you did but I wasn't clear about how to connected the pad to microphone points 2 and 7. The last time I tried to make a modular mic plug it ended up in a big mess (couldn't seem to get the flimsy ground wire into the plug). Gave up and ordered a cord with an RJ45 one each end.
So how did you wire the unit in? Through the modular mic plug or internally? Via the back mic jack?

Ron

I just cut the end off of a network cable and connected the appropriate wires to the switch pad from mic 2 and 7. I plugged it into the rear mic connector. That's OK because there isn't a mic in the keypad, so no problems with 2 mics. Works like a champ! 73, Carl AB1DD Resistance is futile.
