Repeater access

Adrian McGonigle

Not that I use repeaters much but decided to try my IC-7000 on the local repeater tonight, cannot seem to access it,  offset is set correctly, ctcss tone is set correctly but I just cant access it, the repeater is close to me so I can access it even with a handheld but nogo with the 7000, no idea whats going on.

Do you have CTCSS on as ENC/DEC, i.e. on both input and output, not just on input only?

I cant seem to see that option anywhere, I would have presumed it would be default but not sure

Adrian,

Make sure that you are in FM-TONE mode not just FM.

You also have to have the frequency offset correct + - 600 kc for most
What repeater are you trying to access so that we can look up the settings
Perhaps use the Repeater Book app on your phone to check.
You should have a tone set to the correct frequency and the offset as well
If yo push tome and hold it it should let you set the correct frequency, often 100 HZ

As I said in the original post, offset is correct -600 and CTCSS tone is correct for my local repeater 110.9, have tried various filter widths in case it was something there but no go

Hmm looks like the problem wasnt me after all, the local repeater has been having issues, were all good now

Can you access another repeator using tones? If not then maybe the tone output is too low and needs increased. Service manual stuff. GL

hmm.  Stupid question, since I’m sure you’ve tried this - but are you able to reach other repeaters?  When I was having a similar problem none of my repeated access worked, and I ended up putting all the repeaters in memory using CHIRP.

Three questions:

Have you put a watt meter in line with the radio and measured the TX output power and antenna SWR?

Second question, have you tried using another radio and see if you can hit the repeaters your trying to hit?

Third question, have you tried to listen to you radio with a portable or another radio to see if you can hear voice from your radio under test and the CTCSS tone required to open the repeater your trying to hit.  This will require you to listen to the repeater input.

These are the simple tests that will point you in the right direction if the radio is having a problem.

Sorry for the late reply now that you seem to have the repeater keying up.  But it might help you in the future.
