I hear audio in the speaker when transmitting
notcoldenough
I just purchased a used IC 7000. When I transmit, I hear my voice in the speaker or headphones. It is a faint crackly reproduction of my voice. The speaker monitor menu is set to "off", so in theory at least, there should be no sound during transmitting.
The problem occurs in all bands, on both my antennas, and even while using my dummy load. The only way I have been able to stop it is to reduce the transmit power to 10%. I cleaned the fuses, and even tried the power cable from my Kenwood. No difference. I removed the tuner from the antenna circuit. No change. Added split core ferrites to all leads on the radio. no change. One odd thing I noticed is that when I lightly touch the headphone plug, the radio amplifies the sound of my touching the plug and outputs that sound into the speaker. And yes, I verified that headphone was plugged into the correct jack on the radio. I have run out of things to check, so I plan on returning the used IC 7000 to the vendor. I am considering buying a new 7000, but I wanted to ask this group if other users hear audio while transmitting. Thanks in advance for your responses. John KC0UUT |

That isn't a problem I've encountered before, given what you've done to eliminate the usual causes.

One possiblity perhaps is someone has had the case off and some of the grounding spring fingers and pink RF absorbers aren't positioned correctly. There's a document with pictures of how they should look in this Group's Files section. Look for '7K Grounding Fingers.doc'. Just to be safe, I would check the DC supply voltage as seen inside the radio while transmitting into a dummy load at 100 watts in CW or FM mode. Measure across pins 3 & 4 of the TUNER connector. You should have at least 13.0 VDC there, assuming your power supply is set for 13.8 VDC. If you have a high resistance in the power path somewhere that results in several volts drop under dynamic loads, it can cause various problems. Poor shield connections (or slightly loose shells) on the PL-259 connectors can result in a lot of RF leakage right at the back panel, that really mess up the rear mic and speaker cable signals. Lots of luck finding the problem or returning the unit. Steve, W3AHL --- In ic7000@..., "notcoldenough" wrote:

I built a simple circuit to mute the external headphone or speaker during transmitting. The speaker is also muted when the Icom is tuning via an external tuner such as the LDG IT 100. The circuit has a 4 second time delay so the annoying "power on" speaker click is no more. Unfortunately, it is not able to eliminate the "power off" click. A pdf of the circuit has been uploaded in the files section. File name is IC7000 Mute switch.pdf. Hope this can help others. John KC0UUT --- In ic7000@..., wb0m wrote:

Hi everyone,
i am having the same problem with my icom 706mk2g. The problem of the audio emitted by the speaker in TX occurs on all bands, mainly in AM and a little in SSB, and grows by increasing the RF power. However, it does not appear on FM. Tried checking grounds on all boards (loosening and tightening screws and securing contact points with outer case), but no fix. Is the only way to mute the speaker? Also I noticed that toroidal inductor L174 makes a loud hum on AM.
Thank you. |

Hi try putting a 50ohm dummy load on the radio and see if it still is happening, if it is not it is RF getting back into the radio, Try a common mode choke on the coax at the antenna and if you still have it one at the radio end, Dave On Wed, 28 Dec 2022, 19:25 , <marco.lafranca@...> wrote:

Hi,
Thank you davebb123456 for your hint. Today I was able to test the radio with a dummy load. The problem manifests itself the same way as the antennas I tested. I am attaching an example video. So can it be ruled out that it is RF getting back into the radio?
Any other ideas?

Excuse me, try again.

I can see it now, thanks. It sounds very like the MONITOR feature (as in the IC-7000) but I don't think that is a feature in the IC-706 line. Very weird. Hi Marco This is very loud and clear I would now say it is not RF getting back to the radio, You do not hear FM because of the way it is modulated, Try and have a look at the TX/RX switching, what happens if you use the data socket, also have you asked in the 706 forums? Hi, Do you have the "monitor function" on? PG 87 & 1228 of the manual. If you can hear yourself talk through the speaker you might want to check it. 73 Hugh KL7HM

My suggestion is to open the radio and snug, not over tighten, the circuit board mounting board screws and check all ribbon cables for full and square insertion. I took the extra step and used exact size star washers for a proper “bite”. This step will certainly not hurt anything if done carefully. It helped a audio problem I had with my 706MK2G that I ran mobile. On Fri, Jan 6, 2023 at 2:41 PM davebb123456 <davidbrowne76@...> wrote:

Even though this is an IC-7000 group, the radio in question is an IC-706MKiiG so it can't be that. Hi guys, thank you all for your replies.
@Hugh: My radio is a 706mkiig, it shouldn't have the monitor functionality. @davebb: I haven't tried the data socket yet. Now I also write in the other forum. @Brian, @davebb Regarding the T/R relay (RL1 on the filter board?), what kind of checks should I do on the circuit? do you check the welds? check its driver Q1? or other? thank you @Rick Robinson: I've already done some checks on the screws, masses and cables. Which card in particular should I check? |

That is no welds
Check that the circuit is blocking the rec.

i'm using the original ic706 mic, i haven't tried another mic. I tried plugging it into the back connector as well but it's the same. Was your problem inside the microphone or on the connector? thanks
