Re: [IC-7000] Re: Driver Board is smoked

Kjell Karlsen <la2ni@...>

Hello:

As I wrote around 1 week ago, I had a defective Driver board on my 7K. As I received the new boart from my ICOM dealer, I did the replaceing myself and then discowered that there was no heat compound between the copper strip on the driver board and the heatsink. Even worse is that the copper strip is not flat so only the ends are in touch with the sink. The power dissipation in the driver is 14W independent of the output level (class A). I think the problem must be the missing heat transfer from the transistor via the copper strip to the heatsink.
I would advice to make the copper strip flat before installing it by fileing it with a fine file to be sure the heat transfer is as good as possible and also use heat compound.

Hi Chuck - I was quite concerned to see your post on the driver board etc. Well my friend you "ain't alone" as mine has done exactly the same thing twice. The last trip back to Icom Australia from the selling dealer resulted in them contacting Japan for assistance. I heard 2nd hand that an earth loop mod corrected the problem and I have had the 7k back in use now for about a week with no drama so far. The first time it went up in flames and filled the shack with nasty smoke. In fact the dealer smelt the 7K in it'[s box as I took it through his door. The 2nd demise (after 3days back) saw no smoke and flames but a distinct phtttttt was heard. The driver FET is used for HF, VHF and UHF. Apart from those probs which were fixed under W/Ty I guess I was content with the rig!!!!!! BTW., the rig still smells slightly so I hope that may disappear. Hats off to the local dealer UHF Comms. here in Townsville for their W/Ty service on boh occasions. This 7K was one of three purchase!
d in November 2006. Perhaps you could pass on this info to your repairer just in case.

Good luck mate...

Mine went up in smoke today while on 6 Meters!!!!!!
Not too pleased right now!!!!!!

I'll be sending my IC-7000 back after only about 18 months of service.
It was an early production radio so I guess the driver board issue had
not been addressed at that point.
What sucks is I wanted to try to work 3B7C on some other bands this
week and now I'm toast. By the time I get it back, they will be
finished with the DXpedition :( :( :( :(

Maybe time to buy that TS-2000 or PRO III I have been wanting(?)

****If ICOM won't help with the repair issue, I won't be buying any
more of their products again!!!!!!!!!!
We SHALL see............

Announced in Dayton?

I guess this rig will be announced in Dayton assuming it's not an adobe

I've been looking at the IC-706MkIIG as a mobile/portable/backup rig,
but now I think I'll wait and see what potential the IC-7000 might
offer for those purposes. This new reflector is a great idea...

High Sierra Antennas and the IC-7000.

Keith LaBorde - K4KAL <k4kal@...>

Guys,

I have been anxiously waiting for a new Icom Mobile. Every year at Dayton I asked the same question, and they say NO.
I own three 706MKIIg's. I have one in each vehicle, and a spare in the closet for field day, etc.

I exchanged a few emails with High Sierra today to confirm that there I-Box Controller will still plug into the new IC-7000.
Jim must have known about the radio or talked to Icom because he said it would work with no problems.
The IC-7000 has the same plug on the rear as the 706 Series. So there looks to be some compatibility.

I know he sells his antenna's all over the world, so I was glad to here that my 1800/Pro and Sidekick will work with no problems.
I am sure I will get one of these new radio's when they are available.
My big wish is they increased the output power?

I guess we will see it under the glass at Dayton 2005.

Keith, K4KAL

IC-7000 is likely the EU number...

The US Number will likely be IC-7XX where XX is to be determined.

No sign of announcement in Japan yet, but I'm sure the dream will come
true soon!

Wish it had a 1.2G also.

It might give a chance to Yaesu/Kenwood to make something like
FT-817+1.2G or TS-2000 compact etc. More choices for us ;-)

I had been toying with the idea of the 706MkIIG for the truck. Only have a 2M/70cm rig in there now. Now I mna glad I waited. This sounds like the one I will want. I can't wait for more information to be available

Be aware that ICOM has not yet rolled out it's latest version of the 706MKIIG: it has been announced in France. We'll probably see it this summer or fall here in the states.
See Megahertz Magazine, Feb 2005 issue for details.

Re: High Sierra Antennas and the IC-7000.

Keith LaBorde - K4KAL <k4kal@...>

Keep in mind!, The 706MKIIG is a proven rig. I have never heard a bad one on the air.
In my case, I own 3 and have never had any problems with them over the past few years.
I started with the 706MKII and eventually sold on eBay and got all MKIIG's.
This new radio has been over due...
It looks like a "Baby PRO-III" from the picture.

This new transceiver will be an opportunity for you go purchase one of those at a reduced price from someone looking to upgrade.
Amateur Radio Clubs, Schools, etc. use them a lot for Field Day and Emergency Gear, so it may also be a good time to Donate them.
I purchased a new one at Dayton last year for $749.00 as a spare, field day radio.
I can remember when the 706MKII came out it was selling for $1395.00
I waited and got mine for $1195.00, then as time went on the IIG came out, and the price hung in the $995.00 range with rebates, etc.

I look forward to seeing the more detail specs on the radio. What is in the PDF file from the Magazine that is on the web just wasn't enough.
We need to keep an eye on the Icom Japan website for updates. They usually go first, and the US lags behind waiting for FCC Compliance.

Running HF Mobile is a lot of fun. Especially if you sit in traffic for long period of time, or drive long distances.
You quickly program the memories for the 40M Nets, and the DX Nets on 15M and 20M.
I have a Digital Voice Recorder that can hold 4 hours on the visor. So I just push the record button and start talking.
Then later, I go back and update the log and send out QSL Cards.

I frequently travel on extended trips, and carry a small generator with me and large power supply.
That way I can find a park or in some cities a high spot where there is a road going up to a water tower to work DX.

73,
Keith, K4KAL
