I bought mine used 7 years ago and used it mobile for a couple of years on HF as well as for 2 meter repeaters. It is now my backup radio in the shack and still performing perfectly. Judging by how often I've had to repair my primary radio it is used a lot hi. It is set up for FT8 which I seen to use often. I chase DX with it on SSB and CW.

Some one suggested changing the fuses and while I have not don't that it is a good idea.

Going Mobile the only issue was it shutting down on transmit. RF getting into it was causing the problem. I added ferrites to the coax and that stopped that problem. If your s works in the mobile right off the bat, just use it and enjoy it.

Paul,

I wonder after what serial number this fix was applied? I think I bought my 7000 around the second year they were available for purchase.

@Mark the fellow mentions it had a heat modification done years ago by ICOM itself .

Eventually the radio will live under the passenger seat i think .

@OE8UWW , whats wrong with the AM filter? too Narrow? , i'll look into it as those 9KHz wide ceramic filters are cheap enough (if that is what they use in it) , i do heaps of SWL .

cheers Paul

I ran mine mobile for years in Southern California summer heat and the rig never had temp problems. I'd suggest replacing the stock blade fuses with regular barrel types but other than that my 7000 has been bullet proof.

Temperature is the only problem.
Install the fan mod if you put the rig in the car.
I used SSB on the AM broadcasts, select the better sideband.

Last question and thanks , a SWL here , how is the radio on the HF shortwave broadcasts , the AM filter good enough?

It'll be installed in the vehicle eventually .

Re: IC-7000 to TNC-X

Don Rolph

I used to get them from Buckscomm but they have gone out of business.

The following cable looks like the correct cable:

The IC7000 should have the 6 pin mini-din CE standard data connector on the back.

After posting this, things I didn't realized....

1. My RF power was quite low (3).
2. Laptop audio (SDR station on 14.255) was going out to US Navigator.

Can't repeat problem, but I wonder how I'm hearing static where there is a super clear conversation audible when transmitting.

It looks worse than it is.
Remove the components, the connectors,
clean the print, install the 1,5 Ohm resistor,
and the board will work again.

How to install the gate resistor mod is on Youtube.

Re: New to the group and experiencing a problem

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the info. Your setup is pretty much how the setup is here at the CERT station that we have at our HOA clubhouse except we have a different power supply. So far, no problems with that one. The 7000 I have in the car is just connected directly to the vehicle battery with the two automotive type fuses in line located right near the battery. So, the only places that might have started to oxidize would be at the connector on the back of the rig or in the fuse holders. I haven't had a chance to look into it yet. BTW..I use a Samlex SEC-1223 at my station at home and it's been very reliable for a long time. I've even taken on a couple of holiday style DXpeditions because it's not too heavy to carry around.

Al, N3EA

Re: New to the group and experiencing a problem

Hi
I use the 7000 and AH4 and experience the power regularly if SWR is high. The 7000 is designed that way to protect the rig.
Testing on dummy load will confirm this.
Remember the AH4 will not tune everything. The antenna has to be nearly matched at least before the AH4 can do its work
