I actually bought it second hand from someone who bought it for a backup rig. It had never been removed from the box when I bought it but it was out of warranty unfortunately..

No, not when using the data port. (6pin)

Hi Steve

Well I was right in thinking no gain adjustment for the 6pin data port!

Ok it's a Cross Country Wireless APRS TNC Digi Tracker with two audio setting ,high and low

I have tried both, on low absolutely no packet audio heard from HT ( 10 m away) or the radios Audio monitor.

On high I can just about hear it, way to low for it to be received, I have also adjusted the trackers potentiometer for max audio out.

I have not tried to reduce the TX power, but will try in 20mins or so.

9600 is off

I will try again but tried everything I can think of apart from reducing TX power. I was hoping to keep away from the 13pin the only other option is to connect it to the mic socket, and swap it out when not using the radio with the aprs.

You didn't mention which TNC your tracker is using -- that might help.

Just to correct some of the previous replies:

The Mic Gain does NOT affect the DATA port audio input level.

Do NOT use the ACC port instead, since it is more sensitive to RFI and also the open mic issue.

The DATA port does NOT have the open mic issue that the ACC port has

I have never needed an impedance matching transformer with any of the TNC's I've used.

Trackers never use 9600 baud.  The 9600 baud setting should be OFF.

0.4 Vpp = 0.141 Vrms  (which should be close enough for a starting point) despite what the manual says on page 116.

If the HT you are monitoring with is too close to the TX antenna, it may be desensing.  Try decreasing the 7K's TX power output.

Lacking an FM deviation meter, increase the TNC audio output level until the tone on the monitoring radio stops increasing in level, then back off a little.  The 7K will limit deviation to 4.5 KHz.  You want about 3 - 3.5 KHz deviation for packet signals.

If you can't adjust the TNC output level loud enough, try using a DVM to measure the audio signal while using the CAL command to send a mark or space signal.  Try for at least 100 - 200 millivolts, then adjust as described above.

I have set the tracker to high audio output, but can barely hear the audio on a HT.

I have had it working 100% on a TS-2000, but just cant get the audio to increase on the Icom

using Pin 1 on the data plug, and as far as I can tell, input audio is not adjustable on the IC-7000 data port.

Any ideas ?

Just out of curiosity, what APRS tracker are you using?

If the mic is plugged in, it is an open mic when transmitting the APRS data.

try a impedance balancing transformer between your audio line and data port. sounds like a mismatch to me.

Hi I've tried 1200 and 9600 to no avail , not sure the audio gain effects the data output pin but tried min to max.

I'm guessing it's a level problem on the data port input pin, the recommended level is 0.4 Vp-p (0.2 Vrms): I will have to check the spec on the TNC.

A couple of scatter shots:

1) are you on 9600 baud or 1200 baud for packet at the IC-7000?

2) what is the transmit audio gain on the IC-7000?

if you are on 9600 vs 1200 buad, the audio can work unreliably.

There is a gain control for transmit audio on the IC-7000 which can allow you to set transmit audio volume.

I did some Googling, and found this warning (which surprised me):

Heil Microphones for the IC-70000

I can believe the FM problem -- I suspect you can't use the COMPressor in FM mode.

I'm surprised that you can't use the TX Bandwidth adjustments on the IC-7000 to get the PR-781 working well.   That's too bad -- it's a nice mic.

Maybe I'm the crazy one, but I sent mine to AB5N and had him perform his microphone mod. Then I did a side-by-side comparison with another factory mic over the air and asked several stations which audio they liked better. I even tried a comparison to a desk mic. Hands down, the AB5N mod-ed mic won, it wasn't even close. Granted, its a hand mic, but it got the best audio reports of all. He still does the mod for about $50. I've had him do 3 for me so far, and I give him five stars every time.
