Laptops' USB interfaces tend to be more sensitive to RFI than desktop computers since there is no chassis to AC grounding typically in a laptop.  I have a Lenovo T440S and have no problems with this cable:

  Icom CT-17 USB FTDI Chipset CI-V Cat Control Programming Cable 3 Feet RPC-I17-U

  I certainly wouldn't consider buying another Radio Shack cable.

Other suggestions are:
  1. Use the shortest USB cable possible to minimize RF pick up.
  2. Route the cable away from feed lines, tuners, power meters, etc.
  3. Make sure your station's RF ground is adequate.  Most aren't....
  4. Retighten all coax connectors to prevent leakage of RF onto the shield.
  5. But most important -- Install a good common-mode choke on the feed line before the coax enters the shack.
  6. Some software doesn't like baud rates below 9600.

Perhaps a posting of the issue to the N1MM+ reflector is in order?  I don't have much hair left to pull out!!
