Hello fellow birders,

A friend sent me these photos today asking what kind of bird this is nesting in the wreath on her front door. It does not look at all like a house finch. To me it looks like a ruffed grouse, but I need your expert opinions.

Thoughts? (PS they are avoiding using that door)

Thanks!

Marne

Looks like a House Finch to me. They’re notorious for nesting in such places.

agreed on house finch
(although I can see where the odd posture does give a superficial sense of a grouse profile)

Well, she had me fooled! She seemed to have such a long neck for a house finch. The nesting site seemed pretty unlikely for a ruffed grouse ;)

Thank you for your responses and assistance!
