July Doldrums-PSA

Muddling through the July Doldrums, I suggest and recommend that you consider a visit to Silvia O Conti NWR (Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge | U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (fws.gov)).

On the upland western slope of the Connecticut River valley bisected by the Nulhagen River, it offers hiking trails and boardwalk trails through northern alpine forests and bogs.  Resident birds include Gray Jay, Black Backed Woodpecker, Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Red Breasted Nuthatch, and Red Crossbill.   There is also currently a wide variety of breeding Wood Warblers, Flycatchers, and Thrush on territory with lots of feeding youngsters.

Check the Moose Bog and Peanut Dam Road hotspots on e-bird for recent checklist sightings.  Its impressive.

It is a bit of a haul, about 4 hrs from Albany, but you could do it in a day.

Happy birding
