Pack Forest Preserve
Scott Varney
Hiked a 6.7 miler today at Pack Forest Preserve in Warrensburg, NY. The trail basically follows along the perimeter of the lake. Highlights included a pair of Broad-winged Hawks, loads of singing Winter Wrens, Purple Finches, 1 Great Blue Heron, 3 Bufflehead, and one breeding-plumaged Common Loon. Fantastic day! Finally found a pair of Wilson’s Snipe this morning when atlasing, accompanied by my first Lesser Yellowlegs of the year and a Killdeer. All on the edges of a very small pond in a wet meadow in Gansevoort.

Slightly Extralimital Virginia Rail family on Rail Trail in Rupert, Vermont
Scott Varney
While hiking next to a small pond and marsh area today, my sister and I stumbled across a group of at least 3 adult Virginia Rails with several little babies. The adults began kiddicking and grunting at about 6 pm and we got lots of photos. Best looks I've ever had at this species! The baby birds were clumsy little black balls of "fur"! Rupert, VT is literally just across the border from Salem, NY on County Route 153. Scott Varney Salem, NY

Re: Robin on suet feeder
ConserveBirds
Thank you to all who replied. Since many replied to me privately that they had never seen a robin feeding this way I took a couple photos when the bird returned this evening. They are attached.

influx of robins in snow squall
scottjstoner
i know they are common birds but the number is unusual in our yard. during a brief snow squall we had 8 together foraging in a small flower garden, with a total of 11 in the yard. we've also had a continuing presence of 21 American Goldfinches the past several days. Re: Robin on suet feeder
James Elbrecht
Not a Robin- but I have a male Goldfinch that likes suet. And a
pair of Goldfinches that seem to prefer sunflower seed to niger
seed. I had the upside-down niger feeder for a while, and a Chickadee
figured it out and used it. Then, a couple years later, all the
finches started ignoring it. No amount of cleaning/replacing
could entice the current crop of birds. So I went back the the
right-side-up tube feeder. Sometimes the birds don't read the manuals. Jim Niskayuna

Robin on suet feeder

This morning I observed for the first time in my memory an American Robin perched on and feeding from a suet feeder. Has anyone else ever seen this?

Re: anchor diamond park - t. of ballston
Hi Gregg, that would be me. I moved the pin about 500m to the west of the current location. It may take 24 hrs. or so for the position to update. Let me know if that doesn't happen, please. I'll try to look at it tomorrow evening as well.

anchor diamond park - t. of ballston
gregg_recer
I explored a new (at least to me) Saratoga Plan preserve today; anchor diamond park on middle line rd in the town of ballston, saratoga county. It's recently donated to the town, and Saratoga Plan manages the conservation easement. It's mainly forest, some swampy hardwoods, white pine, and hemlock stands. Trails were mucky in a few spots, but easy to work around and there are good boardwalks and bridges in several locations.
Highlights included a FOY blue-headed vireo, multiple drumming and calling yellow-bellied sapsuckers (presumed migrants), multiple singing pine warblers and brown creepers, and singing winter wren. I noted that while the entire trail system after the first few yards is within on atlas block (burnt hills CE), the preserve ebird hotspot is placed near the parking area and just over the boundary in round lake CW. I'd suggest revising the hotspot pin location if someone can tell me who the appropriate hotspot reviewer is. thanks -- gregg recer malta NY

Averill Park - Burden Lake - Bonaparte's gull
Brian Smith
Saw a bonaparte's gull today on Burden Lake off Second Dyke road. I can't remember having seen them here before. Also still seeing bufflehead. Had a pair of blue winged teal late last week as well. Osprey and bald eagle are around. I didn't see a rusty blackbird
this year year around.
Gorgeous day, especially at the end when the wind died down.

rt loon & rn grebe - round lake
gregg_recer
cathy graichen and I did some water birding around central saratoga county today. In addition to the caspian tern at the saratoga lake marine park (reported there also by naomi 2 days ago -- presumed same bird?), highlights were at round lake where we had a basic-plumage red-throated loon and an impressive group of 9 alternate-plumage red-necked grebes. Also present at RL, an osprey pair seeming to stake claim to a nest there. We were able to dig out a few wilson's snipe at wright's loop, including hearing a calling bird doing what sibley calls the grinding-ticks call.

Carter's Lake Birding
Scott Varney
Relatively quiet with birds with cold temps and blustery winds. Highlights included a male Northern Harrier, 8 Great Blue Herons all on nests, 3 Pine Warblers, and about 50 Ring-necked Ducks. Brown Creeper songs are the most vocal in the woods here. Lots of Swamp Sparrows singing on the other side of the lake as I travelled Ferguson Road. Also had another Eastern Towhee on Kilburn Road on my way home. Happy Birding, Scott Varney Salem NY

Vischer Ferry Ducks
jhershey2
I walked around the ponds at Vischer Ferry Preserve this afternoon. The overall number of ducks there has dwindled quite a bit from a few weeks ago, but there are still a pretty good variety of species. I counted 3 Northern Shovelers, 6 Blue-winged Teal, 6 American Wigeon, 5 Wood Ducks, 2 Ring-necked Ducks, 1 Hooded Merganser, and 1 Pied-billed Grebe. The main entrance parking lot was pretty full but it's possible to walk the trails without passing many people at all. The migrant songbirds should be arriving in big numbers soon.
