Lesser Black-backed Gulls- 3/2

trwdsd

I birded the Hudson River--Mohawk River corridor between Green Island and Latham this morning. From the Crescent Power Plant I could see a small group of gulls collected on the ice just above the spillway on the Waterford side. Among them was an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. There was also a pair of Lesser Scaup swimming in the Mohawk just downriver from the power plant. I then moved just upriver to the pull-off along Crescent Rd., to where the edge of the ice shelf on the Mohawk has receded. In the large group of gulls at the water's edge there was an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. I couldn't be sure this wasn't the same bird, but only ten minutes time had elapsed between sightings. Subsequently, another birder confirmed that there were indeed two present. The main channel of the Mohawk River appears to be completely ice free now, as far westward as the Niskayuna Train Station area at Lions Park, and perhaps much farther. Expect a lot of movement this week with waterfowl and gulls.

This week's destination: 2/26

Naomi Lloyd

Still apologising for last week's dearth of Short-eared Owls when they have been seen every day before and after... but onwards to a new week.

The weather looks moderately sucky but seems we might get a dryish slot. There was some action on the river around Stillwater today and geese have been on the move, so let's meet at the the Mechanicville Price Chopper at 9:00am and we can check the river up and down from there -- Lock 2, River Rd, etc.

Good birding and stay dry!

Bill and I were the only birders last week and got skunked on grasslands birds, despite others finding good stuff later that day and in the week. So let's try the Washington/Saratoga grasslands again and hope for better luck (and more eyes!)

Meet at Hudson Crossing park at 9:00. I might spend the rest of the day up there and look for SEOW in the afternoon.

Black Vultures

jeffdeal

I had a great sighting of two black vultures flying through my back yard in North Greenbush this morning, just south of HVCC.  The white wingtips were unmistakable!

Turkey Vultures

Ron

Just saw 2 Turkey Vultures soaring near the intersection of Creble Road and 9W, Selkirk.

Crows

Ron

My wife and I went to Troy on Saturday around 5 pm and we noticed hundreds and hundreds of crows that filled the sky and nearly all the trees along the West Bank of the Hudson where Highway 7 crosses were full of crows. Not sure if that is a regular site or not, but we were amazed by the numbers.

This seems to be the first ebird record of this hybrid in region 8.  I haven't checked the kingbird for older records.

Signs of spring!

Heidi

At 10:35 this morning I saw my FOS V of about 25 Canada Geese flying high and NORTH over the Hudson River near Troy.

Also spotted 3 Turkey Vultures circling over Pawling Avenue near Emma Willard School.

And at home in Sycaway.... happy to see my first crocus poking up.

I know we’re not out of the woods yet but I’m encouraged.

Re: Common Grackle South Glens Falls

Barb, Rod and Jill

I too had a Common Grackle yesterday and today. Also, I’ve been seeing two or three red-wing blackbirds off and on for a couple of weeks, but today an entire flock of 30-40 swept through my yard. In Jefferson, Schoharie County.
