White-winged crossbills
Susan
Had about a dozen white-winged crossbills in SNHP before and after stop 6 at the SNHP. They were flying from pine to pine in an easterly direction. The last I saw them they were headed across the fields at Stop 6 towards Stop 7. I did not get great looks at them, but used the flight calls as ID. Red-crossbills were recently reported in the same area. Susan Beaudoin

common redpolls - pine bush preserve
gregg_recer
Cathy Graichen and I walked the yellow trail from the pine bush discovery center this afternoon. We eventually found a group of about 40 common redpolls -- first at the vernal pool overlook and then the segment of trail between markers 6 & 8 along the foot of the capped landfill. Any birch stands with ample catkins would probably be good places there to look.

Saratoga Lake on Wednesday ... there were nine Snow Geese offshore of Brown's Beach. We need snowy and frigid nor-easter in Quebec to get more.

Albino red tailed hawk?
Sue Rokos
Greetings, we were a half mile ish from Young's Rd on RT 7, driving towards Duanesburg, when I noticed a startling white bird behind the silo by little barn on a log. We turned around and drove back, and a large white hawk like bird took off, and flew over the tree line between RT 7 and I 88, very white, with some black spot speckling mid underneath wings. (I of course took my binocs out of car yesterday to keep from freezing), raced home to get binocs and returned, saw him again perched high in tree behind the Joyce Says Pub, driving towards Schoharie county line. We could see some black on the tail, very white bird. My Sibley Bird East says probably an albino red tailed hawk, def. Not a snowy owl, and no black on wing tips, so not a gyrfalcon either. We have had a family of red tailed hawks this past spring and summer at the end of our road, which runs into Young's Road, but all seemed normal variations of red tails. This was special! We will return tomorrow morning, bringing the scope, and hope to see again. Sue and Dennis Rokos Duanesburg

Common Redpolls - Ferry Drive
jhershey2
This morning I was walking the trail between Ferry Drive and the Vischer Ferry Power Plant and found a mixed group of about 15 Common Redpolls and 15 American Goldfinches. They were feeding on cones on the many Alder trees along the path next to the river. They moved around from tree to tree but stayed in the same general area. After turning around at the power plant and going back toward Ferry Drive I saw them again. The light was poor for photos but I attached a few anyway of the redpolls.

ft edward grasslands
gregg_recer
I spent a few hours covering secondary roads on both sides of SR 197 in the FE grasslands this morning, mainly prospecting for redpolls or other finches. Found none, but wintering raptors do seem to be picking up there -- in addition to numerous rt hawks, I found 1 dark-morph rough-legged hawk and 2 n. harriers along Cary rd, a cooper's hawk on Mahaffey rd and an A. kestrel on Townline rd. Also a single large group of roughly 20 A. tree sparrows on Townline.

It is funny, in our last number of outings 5 Rivers, Pascanee, Emma Treadwell we’ve seen sapsuckers (first of year). Also, brown creepers also at Pinebush and all those places.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Surprise
Alan
Spotted a woodpecker on the suet that looked different from the
usual suspects. The bird quickly flew to a nearby true, and
binoculars revealed a female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.
In my years of feeding birds, I've never had a sapsucker visit my feeders. I see 3 percent of New York's Feederwatch reports for the first two 2020-2021 season periods report Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. (Last year it was 3 and 2 percent.) Clear skies, Alan Glenville
