Birding suggestions

Catherine Neal <wettsun21@...>

Hi birders. I'm visiting a friend in Valatie and am interested in finding birding hikes in this area. All suggestions are welcome. I'm up for long and arduous or short and sweet.

Thanks all.

Chuck-will's-widow in Warren County eBird Report - Northwest Rd., May 27, 2017

This bird was heard last night by another birder and I just returned from hearing it as well. The pin is dropped right where I heard the bird singing. The location is less than a mile from where a Chuck's was heard last year. Whip-poor-wills calling also.

Extralimital Mourning Warbler in Rupert, VT

Scott Varney

While cycling a 25 mile ride from my home in Salem to Rupert, VT I observed a single Mourning Warbler on East Road in West Rupert. Perhaps even more interesting was my alarming moment of a juvenile Mountain Lion crossing the road right in front of me. I dumped my bike and found the Mountain Lion and showed it to a resident in front of his house. We both observed it well and there was no mistaking it! I used to worry about traffic while cycling! Rupert is about 15 minutes East of Salem by car out Route 153.

HMBC field trip report: Normanskill Farm - 5/27/17

Tristan Lowery

Fourteen birders - including me as leader, as well as a few HMBC first-timers - spent a little over 2 1/2 hours at the City of Albany's Normanskill Farm property this morning. I was there about an hour before the official start, and tallied 56 species for the morning, while the official field trip count was 47 species.

It's getting late for through-migrant songbirds, though we did hear a few Blackpoll Warblers (however, on the way to the farm this morning from my home nearby, I saw singing Black-throated Green and Chestnut-sided Warblers, as well as a silent Swainson's Thrush, in a small city park off Whitehall Road). We had good looks at many crowd-pleasing birds that breed at Normanskill, including both local orioles (including a first-summer male and female Orchard Oriole together), singing Willow Flycatcher and Great Crested Flycatcher, both male and female Bobolinks, a Brown Thrasher, many Yellow Warblers, two Bald Eagles, and a hapless Broad-winged Hawk we saw three times, each time being mercilessly harassed by blackbirds.

Before the walk began officially, I heard an Alder Flycatcher singing in the private property gully north of Normanskill Drive, the first time I've observed this species here in two years.

Complete eBird checklist, with a few photos here.

Good birding - and thanks to all who came out!

Cohoes Flats

Susan

The water at Cohoes Flatts is extremely high so I didn't expect to see much, but on the spillway there are well over 100 shorebirds. Most are least sandpipers, but there are four DUNLIN left. I didn't see any dowitchers.

Re: Dunlin, Dowitchers, Etc. Cohoes Flats

Just counted 52 dowitchers and found another two dunlin and a semipalmated plover. Definitely worth checking shorebird spots tomorrow morning to see if they stick around the area.

Dunlin, Dowitchers, Etc. Cohoes Flats

Jeremy Collison

Easily over a dozen short-billed dowitchers (I'm still counting!) with at least two dunlin and many least and semipalmated sandpipers flying around with at least four dunlin.
Happy birding,
Jeremy Collison

Dowitchers, Phalarope just flew

Craig Driggs

At Staats Island Rd, Deb Shaw and I were able to get good looks at the Red-necked Phalarope and Short-billed Dowitchers in the far pond on the left. The phalarope was swimming in circles and associating closely with the dowitchers. Her scope definitely helped as they were a little distant.

Just as I was leaving, they all took off and flew East.
