The difference is starlings aren't regularly restocked in the wild for hunting. It's not likely that pheasant populations would survive on their own in most, if not all of New York State without this intervention. Tristan Lowery Albany

We don’t raise starlings to be released in the wild for hunters to shoot at.

The Ring-necked Pheasant seems to be a sticker for some as to counting in CBCs.
We count Starlings. Is there a difference?
With fish we count carp.
With trees we count the London plane.
With reptiles we count Red-eared Sliders.
Am I missing something?

Our rule of thumb with pheasants on the NJ World
Series of Birding was to hold a hand out toward it. If the bird
came toward you, don't count it; if it walked away, check
it off. Not terribly scientific!

I found a Ring-Necked Pheasant at the intersection of Fitzgerald Dr. and Blackhouse Rd. last Friday. Maybe the same bird?

Well, all Ring-necked pheasants in North America are descendents of artificially introduced birds, but the species is established and countable in New York. For ABA purposes, this pheasant is probably not countable because it can reasonably be separated from wild, naturally occurring members of its species due to its location at a release site. However, it can and should still be reported to eBird, where researchers can specifically search for introduced and exotic birds.

So, are we not allowed to "count" them? I was pretty excited to see one. I'm embarrassed if everyone knows they are artificially introduced and therefore nothing to get excited about.

Well look what I found, this link shows that the pheasants are released in the Washington County State Forest, which I presume to be that trail on Blackhouse Rd as our hotspot holds that same name, for youth hunts: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9349.html
I swear there used to be a release further up on Rt 41 in Kingsbury/Smith's Basin ages ago as well but that was word-of-mouth.

I believe the state releases them there for hunters. (Or so a ranger told me once when he saw me walking along the new trail and mistook my scope for a firearm.)

I checked this morning and didn't see the bird, but it was early in the day and there was a lot of traffic, so i couldn't stop and was birding at 55 mph.

Snowy Owl - 13 January
Alison Van Keuren
Yesterday, 13 January, at 2:40 PM, I spotted a Snowy Owl at 317-377 Helderberg Trail in East Berne. The bird was on top of a power pole, part of a power line that crosses a large field occupied by a few horses. This is a busy road with barriers on each side of the road so there is limited observation room. Alison Van Keuren

Today I found 9 Common Redpolls in a birch with great views at the Committal Service Shelter #2 at the Saratoga National Cemetery, including some nice rosy males. Earlier I walked the trail from the center of Round Lake, north to Rte 9 and found a few Redpolls, a flyover Red Crossbills, and 3 noisy White-winged Crossbills who were at the top of mature pines on Goldfoot Rd, close to its intersection with the bike trail. Saw at least 9 short-eared owls around 4:45 this afternoon on Plum Rd in Fort Edward, north of the farm theater. They were north of the rise just past the theater and easily visible, calling and flying all around. Others saw even more, 16, about 10 minutes earlier. Susan Beaudoin

I saw a very similar Canada Goose on Columbia Co. Rt. 21 on a cornfield west of Kinderhook yesterday, about 4-4:30 pm. Has extra white on the face but is a good-sized C. Goose.
