Increased shorebird activity at Cohoes Flats
zach schwartz-weinstein
Lots of least sandpipers and semipalmated plovers, a very obliging pectoral sandpiper, and plenty of both yellowlegs and killdeer. Also a larger calidrid that I couldn't refund after spotting it far away. Might have been the pectoral. ZSW -- Zach Schwartz-Weinstein 203 500 7774

Shorebirds starting to move - Cohoes and Tomhannock
Naomi Lloyd
The Thursday group checked out Cohoes Flats this morning. Lots of open rock, but the water levels continue to fluctuate. We found at least 10 Lesser Yellowlegs who flew and landed within feet of us. Further away we saw Semipalmated Plovers, Least Sandpipers, and numerous Killdeer. Three Osprey peeped overhead. Fromm there we went to the Falls which had Ring-necked Gulls and not much else. An attempted stop at the Crescent power plant was thwarted by road closure.
Later I swung by the Tomhannock. Water levels are still high but some mud is exposed at the north end by Otter Creek. I saw a family of Killdeer, a bunch of Leasties, and a scattering of Spotted and Lesser Yellowlegs. I also had a Yellow Warbler, the first one I've heard singing in a while. Fw: Destination This Week
Naomi Lloyd
Hi, All,
Almost no reports to follow up this week, so we'll have to find some birds on our own. Shorebird migration should be picking up, and while the water level at Cohoes Flats is unknown, we can move elsewhere if water level is too high. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the end of Clark Ave. behind the U-Haul on Ontario St. Hope to see you there. Bill Lee

Birding location on the Hudson River
Louis J. Suarato
I've discovered a very convenient location right on the Hudson in Albany. It's called Springers Marina at 5 Broadway. The marina is south of the Albany Yacht Club, on the opposite shore. There's parking along the river, public restrooms and a breakfast and lunch food stand called H&L on the Hudson. I've seen the usual Hudson River birds, so far, including eagles, cormorants, gulls, terns, various ducks. It's also a perfect location for sunrises and moonrises. https://instagram.com/p/BXigirUnH27/ Louis J. Suarato

Great egret at Five Rivers
Louis J. Suarato
Here's the great egret flying into a tree high above the Goose Pond. I saw it later perched in the Sunfish Pond. It remained there for about an hour.

Sunfish Pond at Five Rivers

The Sunfish Pond at Five Rivers is featuring two green herons, a belted kingfisher, and a great egret. There's also a great blue heron on the edge of the north side of the Goose Pond.

Re: Cohoes Flats -Snowy Egret
zach schwartz-weinstein
There are no white Egrets at Cohoes Flats this morning, and the only shorebirds present are 4-5 lesser yellowlegs and a single least Sandpiper. Perhaps more birds will come in if the water level drops.

Tom W, Lindsey D, and I all looked for the egret/heron at Lock 2 this morning without success. Great egret numbers seem down a bit, so it may have moved elsewhere, or it could be hiding somewhere. Probably worth looking some more. -- Zach Schwartz-Weinstein 203 500 7774

Updated eBird Report - Lock 2 Mechanicville, Aug 1, 2017 mistaken ID on Immature Little Blue Hero
Ronald Harrower
Rich's call for more detail made me look more closely at photos that I took of the bird in flight. Though not as clearly focused, I couldn't miss the yellow feet and must change my identification to Snowy Egret. I hope it is still a bird worth pursuing.

Heron/Egret(s)
Richard Guthrie
Can anyone get a good series of photos of this (these)bird(s)? Immature Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret appear very similar. There are inconsistencies that would rule out Little Blue Heron in the photos I've seen. Or there may be two birds, one of each species present. Either way, some tasking by one or more of our very talented photographers would be much appreciated. -- Richard Guthrie
