"Lucky" Brant
Richard Guthrie
I just watched two adult Bald Eagles in hot-pursuit of a lone Brant. I don't think I've ever seen Bald Eagles take a bird in flight. (I've seen them take out grounded birds, some as large as Canada Goose now and then). The Brant looked so small in comparison, I first thought it was a tern or a teal. But that was just my perception given the unlikely combination of species. The eagles looked like a tag team cutting off the Brant on each twist and turn. They appear to be a bonded pair that has been around for a few days, occasionally fending off a potential territorial intruder. Although they all flew behind a leafy tree and I could not witness the get-away, I could tell that the eagles came up empty since they soon perched together in a neighbor's yard doing their loud eagle chirping. A small group of Brant flew down river shortly afterwards, and I hope that lone goose joined forces with them to continue on to the coast. Richard Guthrie New Baltimore, The Greene County

Brant - New Baltimore & Coxsackie
Richard Guthrie
Groups of about 30 Brant went down the Hudson River by New Baltimore this morning, Nov 1st, at about 8 AM; then later by Coxsackie at about 3 PM. Separate groups of about the same number, I'm sure. Richard Guthrie

I don't have any CBC's scheduled on Dec 24 or Dec 31, both of which I can understand, but just wondering if there were any. Also hoping for some mid week counts other than Montezuma, Greene Co and Ulster/Dutchess. George

Good reminder George!
slightly "extralimital" CBC's centered down south in Ulster County are the NYML (Mohonk Lake/ Ashokan Reservoir) CBC on Saturday, December 16th (Steve Chorvas compiler 845-246-5900 or
schorvas@... ) and the NYUD (Ulster/Dutchess) CBC on Wednesday, December 27th (Mark DeDea compiler 845-339-1277 or forsythnature@...)
Good Birding,
Mark DeDea

HMBC program - Birding the Rio Grande Valley - Monday November 6 at Five Rivers
scottjstoner
Monday November 6
7:00 PM
Five Rivers Environmental Education Center
56 Game Farm Rd., Delmar, NY
in the new Visitor Center
The Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club presents: Valley of Birds: Birding the Rio Grande Valley from Brownsville to Laredo
The lower Rio Grande Valley of south Texas is one of the top birding areas of the US. With species including Green Jay, Plain Chachalaca, Great Kiskadee and Least Grebe, "The Valley" draws birders searching for birds found nowhere else in the country. This program features some of our favorite birding sites from the Gulf Coast to Laredo, as well as some of the wonderful birds that inhabit them.
Speakers: Scott Stoner and Denise Hackert-Stoner
Scott and Denise are life members and past officers of the Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club and long-time birders and nature photographers. Their photos have been featured on the cover of The Kingbird, and published in National Wildlife magazine, the New York State Conservationist, and several books including the New York Wildlife Viewing Guide. They have won awards at the Hagaman Art Show, the William K Sanford (Colonie) Library
Photo Contest, and exhibited at venues throughout the Capital Region. For the past four years, Scott and Denise have been the been the jurists for the Albany Pine Bush Preserve’s annual photo contest. Many of their photos are featured in the permanent exhibits
at the new Visitor Center at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center and in Albany Pine Bush outreach efforts. Scott and Denise teach birding and nature photography workshops and have given a variety of programs to birding and other groups across New York State. Together, they operate Naturelogues, a small, local
business celebrating the beauty of nature in photos taken all over North
America.
