Denise and I just had about 40 Pine Grosbeaks in Salem, Washington county, feeding in the crabapple trees by the old white church on west Broadway, block west of rt. 22,  including at least two beautiful males with fully pink undersides (and probably full bellies as well). Also had YB Sapsucker and several cedar waxwings, common ravens, and flyover flocks of Canada geese. Scott Stoner, Loudonville

Pine Grosbeaks in Salem, NY

Scott Varney

I met up with a couple friends today and we scanned the trees at the big white church today, as well as some other local Crabapple hotspots in the village of Salem.  There are clearly well over 100 Pine Grosbeaks and include at least 5 males seen in 2 different locations within 1/2 mile. 2 subadult males were found on East Broadway and 2 adult males and 1 subadult male at the church on West Broadway.  We also encountered at least 1 Pine Siskin at the church in the morning and I found 3 of them in the late afternoon.  Its panning out to be a great irruption year in Salem!

I've enclosed a couple of my own photos of male Pine Grosbeaks seen today.

Happy Birding,

Scott Varney

Currently, 32 Pine Grosbeaks in the Crabapple Trees at the big white church on West Broadway, near intersection with Main St. (Rt 22) Salem, NY.  They just arrived today. I've been checking all week.  I'm sure there are more to come. Mostly female type.

Leucistic Red-tailed Hawk

Scott Varney

Driving home to Salem from Queensbury via Rt 196 out of Hudson Falls, I re-found a leucistic (albino?) Red-tailed Hawk that I first observed over 3 years ago (presuming it's the same individual bird).  He was perched in a large deciduous tree overlooking the golf course and on the east side of the open green. Kind of cool to re-find him today!  So beautiful!

Happy Birding,

Queensbury PIGR

Alison Van Keuren

Hello all,

Today, Saturday 5 December I visited the Queensbury School Campus to view the Pine Grosbeaks.  I parked in the lot between Aviation and the school.  Only two other cars were in the lot, and I walked around the campus and viewed the PIGR behind the Middle School, in the short crabapple trees.  I also walked to the athletic fields around the other school buildings.  There were people jogging and walking with no one in authority paying any attention to us.

More Pine Grosbeaks Salem

Scott Varney

After seeing my first flock of 32 birds, I did a drive around the block and found 3 more PG's on Archibald Street, 2 more behind the old Trustco bank on Main Street, and watched a new wave of approx 25 birds land in a deciduous tree next to the beginning of the driveway of the big white church.  1 very beautiful red Male in this group was observed well.

I think this puts the total around  60ish birds. (Yes, I double checked to make sure the first flock was still in the original location)

Happy Saturday,

Just had about 30 Common Redpolls at Crescent Power Plant. Not much else interesting here or at Crescent Park but the lighting and rain sure doesn't help.

Hi Scott, any chance you got photos?  Any swallow this late is very unusual and it’s good to rule out some exotic possibilities.

I agree with Lindsey, there are no school functions on the weekend, so that should not be a problem for the school, the sheriff or the church.
