Queensbury PIGR
Alison Van Keuren
Hello all, Today, Saturday 5 December I visited the Queensbury School Campus to view the Pine Grosbeaks. I parked in the lot between Aviation and the school. Only two other cars were in the lot, and I walked around the campus and viewed the PIGR behind the Middle School, in the short crabapple trees. I also walked to the athletic fields around the other school buildings. There were people jogging and walking with no one in authority paying any attention to us. Alison

More Pine Grosbeaks Salem
Scott Varney
After seeing my first flock of 32 birds, I did a drive around the block and found 3 more PG's on Archibald Street, 2 more behind the old Trustco bank on Main Street, and watched a new wave of approx 25 birds land in a deciduous tree next to the beginning of the driveway of the big white church. 1 very beautiful red Male in this group was observed well. I think this puts the total around 60ish birds. (Yes, I double checked to make sure the first flock was still in the original location) Happy Saturday, Scott Varney Salem, NY

Redpolls- Crescent Power

Just had about 30 Common Redpolls at Crescent Power Plant. Not much else interesting here or at Crescent Park but the lighting and rain sure doesn't help.

Hi Scott, any chance you got photos? Any swallow this late is very unusual and it’s good to rule out some exotic possibilities.

Tree Swallows in Greenwich
Scott Varney
I stumbled upon a group of 8 Tree Swallows this afternoon on McClay Road, roadside to a large field with Bluebird boxes about 1/2 mile west of Hartshorn Road. Kind of odd seeing them this time of year in our area. I'll blame it on our unusually mild weather. Happy December, Scott Varney Salem, NY

I agree with Lindsey, there are no school functions on the weekend, so that should not be a problem for the school, the sheriff or the church.

Soooo...is the school a go on weekends, as there are probably no events or functions due to Covid, or just not worth risking that? It was quiet up there last weekend but I also know how things can change when anybody is on to activity. BTW looking at old records and checking recently, the Red Roof Inn in Queensbury had PIGR in the past and currently has lots of crabapples and those hotels are ghetto enough that nobody pays attention to the lots.

Pine Grosbeaks - Queensbury OFF LIMITS ENTIRELY
scottjstoner
A group of us were in the church parking lot and the pastor explained where his house is and how disturbed he was by photographers outside his windows early in the morning. He politely asked that NO ONE enter the church property at all..Not even the parking lot, not for birding, not for photography. It is private and off limits. Please respect his wishes.-Scott Stoner and Alan Mapes Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

Pine Grosbeaks
Susan
At least ten pine grosbeaks were in the crab apple trees behind Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church across from Queensbury Middle School on Aviation Rd. They took off around 2:00. I also checked behind the middle school, but didn’t find any there. As previously stated, the church parking lot is a much more comfortable spot to view them than the school.

Re: follow up - ebird report and images of Pine Grosbeaks in Queensbury yesterday afternoon
Rob Chapman
Just an FYI to the group ... If you are looking for an abundance of Pine Grosbeaks, there are roughly a dozen or more taking refuge in the ornamental fruit trees behind the Catholic Church on the opposite side of the road as the Middle School. These are behind the building just off the rear of the parking lot. This location is much easier to access than the Middle School. If you spend too much time behind the middle school during the day, you will be greeted by either one of the Sheriff Dept. School Resource Officers or a member of the District staff. Having just retired from the school district (as the Director of Facilities and Operations for 20 years - now able to do more birding!) I can pass along to all of you, that visits to the campus during the school day are seriously frowned upon. Bring binoculars and a camera out and you will certainly be requested to leave. The church on the other hand is very accessible and the priest is aware of the rare birds that are eating his tree berries. I spoke with him when I was there. He enjoys the birds and was interested in finding out what kind they were and why I was interested. Here are a couple of the birds I was able to watch and photograph in these trees yesterday. With less foot traffic here, the birds seemed much more tolerable of humans. Happy Birding! .....Rob

This week's destination: 12/3 - NOTE CHANGE OF TIME
Naomi Lloyd
Hey Thursday Birders! We'll be returning to winter hours as of this week - starting at 9:00am. I don't know how many walks we can get in this season, since our usual carpooling to the Grasslands etc will be untenable. Guess we just have to hope for mild weather! This Thursday does look pleasant with temps above freezing by meeting time and light wind. So let's gather at Vischer Ferry and see what it has to show us. Remember - 9:00am! Meet at the parking lot by the Whipple Bridge. https://www.google.com/maps/dir//42.7930716,-73.7957702/@42.7914458,-73.797723,17z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e0?hl=en&authuser=0 Naomi
