Initial results for the Schenectady CBC, Saturday, December 18

Larry & Penny Alden

Initial results are in from all field parties from Saturday’s Schenectady CBC.  This count has been held each year since December 1929. This year’s count was held in wet weather, with temperatures hovering around freezing and snow/sleet/rain falling from around 11:00 onward.

Nine field parties found a total of 61 species, with two additional species reported from within the count circle by non-participants.  Highlights include: 2 Wood Ducks, 4 Gadwalls, I Common Goldeneye, 3 Hooded Mergansers, 3 Double-crested Cormorants, 6 Eastern Screech-Owls, 1 Great Horned Owl, 3 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 1 American Kestrel, 9 Brown Creepers, 6 Winter Wrens, 4 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 1 Hermit Thrush, 1 Gray Catbird, 2 Swamp Sparrows, 10 Red-winged Blackbirds, and 2 Brown-headed Cowbirds.  The two additional species were White-crowned Sparrow and Yellow-rumped Warbler.

The 3 cormorants represent a record, with single individuals reported in just five counts prior to this one.  We also topped the previous highs with 95 Black Vultures and 560 Cedar Waxwings.

Stellars Sea Eagle-Chase?

A Stellars Sea Eagle is being seen  near Fall River, Ma./Pawtucket, RI on the Taunton River. Is anyone interested in chasing this bird if seen again today. I'm not online or on social media so, if interested, give me a call (land line) at 518-374-3426.

interesting gull at Lake Rensselaer

gregg_recer

While doing some scouting for the Schen CBC this saturday, Scott Stoner and I came across an interesting gull at Lake Rensselaer in Albany. It was a large gull, clearly bigger than the nearby ring-bills and close in size to nearby common mergs. My overall impression was probably a 2nd cycle bird; it was quite pale with gray in the mantle and some light/fine mottling on the crown and nape, but very little on the chest/front of neck, and some very pale brown wash in the flanks. The bird was mostly swimming and the primaries looked dark all folded up, but I had one brief view of it as it flew a short distance and landed back in the water -- the primary tips and broad tail band were brown, not pure black. The bill pattern was striking as fairly bright pinkish with a very cleanly demarcated black tip, very much like the expected glaucous gull 1st or 2nd cycle pattern. The other oddity was, while most of the plumage looked 2nd/3rd, the primaries were quite pointed and extended well beyond the tail (more typical of juv/1st cycle).

Overall, I'd say the pale mantle color and the lack of heaving mottling around the head, neck, and chest areas seemed off for typical winter herring. This might just be a very pale herring individual, but there were enough intermediate aspects to it that I wonder about a glaucous x herring hybrid. There are some hybrid photos in Howell & Dunn's gull guide (H3.10-12) that are pretty consistent with this individual. It might not be possible to be sure either way.  Nevertheless, I thought I'd share a few photos and see what thoughts people have. It was somewhat distant, but there are a few decent documentation photos here:

no. shrike, Northumberland

gregg_recer

after several attempts, I was finally able to locate the northern shrike previously reported on puritan Rd, Northumberland about 30 minutes ago. same general area: lower/eastern segment of the road a couple hundred yards west of W River Rd. first along sumacs on South edge of the Rd, and then flying across Rd to short line of trees north of the Rd and making several foraging sallies down to the ground. it's an elusive bird not staying out on any conspicuous perch for very long.

the giant flock of Canada geese continue there and I found 2 snow geese among them (1 white morph adult, and 1 immature). the horse corral up the hill had a pair of bh cowbirds.

Hey, SoRensCo crew - it's almost time to gear up for the count! Admit it, by the day after Christmas, you'll be dying for an excuse to get outside. Please let me know your availability. Teams will be pretty much the same as last year but I'm reaching out to some participants from previous years as well as some newbies.

I'll leave it up to individual teams to decide how you want to travel - carpool, convoy, or solo like last year, based on your own comfort and vaccination status. If your team is splits to cover different sections of your territory, I'll need a separate species list and data report for each.

There will not be a compilation dinner this year. I hope we can resume the tradition for the 2022 count on Saturday, 12/24/22!

Hope to see you --

Naomi
