Thanks to all who have replied. If you can't make it this year, happy holidays and I hope to see you in 2023 on the 23rd!
To all volunteers, thanks so much for your help. No problem if you need to end the day early - any data is good data and I appreciate whatever time you can give the count. Expect parties, map/forms etc by mid month.

No compilation dinner this year - I've only had one person say they were interested.

I still could use more participants. At present there are at best two people per section, and some of those only for part of the day.

Naomi

Hey, SoRensCo crew - it's almost time to gear up for the count! Please let me know your availability. Looks like we may be short-handed so I'm reaching out to some participants from previous years as well as some newbies. If you know people who might be interested in joining field teams, send 'em my way.

I'll leave it up to individual teams to decide how you want to travel - carpool, convoy, or solo like the last two years, based on your own comfort and vaccination status. If your team is split to cover different sections of your territory, I'll need a separate species list and data report for each.

How does everyone feel about resuming our traditional compilation dinner at the Lakeview Inn?

Hope to see you --

Naomi

Monday HMBC Holiday Party and program on Birds of Vischer Ferry preserve

Date and Time: Monday, December 5, 2022, 6:30pm Location: Five Rivers EEC, Delmar, NY Topic: The Birds of Vischer Ferry Preserve Speaker: John Hershey John will talk about some of his experiences birding at the Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve for the last 20 years. He will provide a “tour” of some of the main birding spots and trails in the Preserve. Most importantly, he will share some of his favorite bird photos taken there which illustrate the bird species characteristic of the Preserve and its habitat. These would include ducks, woodpeckers, swallows, warblers, blackbirds, shorebirds, herons, rails, and bitterns. He will be sure to talk about the “mega-rarity” Violet-green Swallow which was discovered there last year, and perhaps a few other lesser rarities as well. John is a former Secretary and Director for HMBC. He has been leading HMBC field trips to Vischer Ferry Preserve, Peebles Island, and Fox Hill Road for many years. Birding has led him to travel throughout North America and more recently to Ecuador, Costa Rica, Panama, and India. He has presented a number of HMBC programs on some of his favorite birding trips. He is semi-retired and works part time as a psychologist in private practice. Feel free to bring a dessert or snack to share. Alcohol not permitted.

Drake Canvasback mixed in with myriad Ring-necked Ducks, a sizable group of Lesser and Greater Scaup and both Hooded and Common Mergansers. I saw the duck down about half way where there is kind of a pull off with a giant puddle to welcome you.

Hey Thursday birders! Winds gusting up to 40 doesn't strike me as good bird-finding weather - little birds will be hunkered down and waterfowl lost in the chop. Better luck next week!

      Tundra Swans, Saratoga lake

the pair of immature Tundra Swans was still present at silver Beach on the west side of Saratoga lake this morning. however they flew toward the south end of the lake just after I arrived at about 9am. they circled around the southern edge of the lake a bit but I couldn't keep them in view from the angle I had. I couldn't relocate them from vantage points on the SW corner of the lake, but that doesn't preclude them being in some hidden bit of shoreline. if they did take off, it would seem plausible to look for them further south like tomhannock reservoir or on the Hudson

Checklist Comments:     I started the loop at Brown’s Beach. The sky was overcast with little to no wind and 43 degrees. Heavy concentrations of Canada Geese and Mallards all around the lake. Silver Beach had the biggest concentrations of Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads and Hooded Mergansers. It also had 9 American Coots.
The birds of the day were two juvenile Tundra Swans seen initially at Manning Cove about 75 feet off the shore. They swam toward Riley Cove where they were much farther out. I saw them again from Solver Beach, seemingly swimming Southward. Very cool after seeing lots of the usual ‘suspects’

Just found two immature Tundra Swans initially at Manning Cove, but they just swam from there to Riley Cove.

I heard a pair of Great Horned Owls just before 6 am this morning. A nice treat while I was still sitting in bed.

      Clear skies, Alan

About 3PM yesterday (Saturday), I was driving near Curtis Lumber on Rt. 67.
Am pretty sure I saw a soaring juvenile Golden with clear white wing patches.
Has anyone heard of other possible sightings?
      Thanks,
      Bob R.
