Saratoga Springs: A White-crowned Sparrow was in my yard on the morning of 6 March. The average arrival date in Region 8 for this species is 20 April.

I think I may have actually gotten into this thing! I don't know what happened before, but it appears that I had gotten in to two other eGroups, but not into HMBirds. I was in one called "eGroup-members", probably some kind of catch all, and also into one called "OldJokes" which I thought was, all things considered, pretty doggone snide. But, either you will all see this posting, or . . . Well, maybe somebody, somewhere, will see it! Now if only I could see a bird! I was out testing my new scope today and saw hooded and common
mergansers on the Mohawk River and the crows seem to have taken the place of the starlings at the power plant across from the Colonie Landfill. Gansevoort: American ketrel Stone Bridge Rd (T of Northumberland): 29 red-tailed hawks, 2 rough-legged hwak, 2 unidentified buteos Rte 113 (Washington county) south of Schuylerville: 50 american black duck, 18 northern pintail, 17 wild turkey Fort Edward: 12 rough-legged hawks (and I didn't go on Mafaffy Rd!), 6 red-tailed hawk, 3 RAVEN (Cary Road), 6 horned lark, 2 bluebirds. I saw some other birders who said they had horned larks, lapland longspurs, and snow buntings on East rd (I didn't go over there). Rough -legged Hawks and Test Post

This is my 3rd attempt at posting, but I think I have it right this time.
We'll find out soon. This Sunday, I saw a dark morph and a light morph Rough-legged Hawk in adjacent trees on Millers Corners Road, Duanesburg, SCHE county. Prior to this winter I had not seen Rough-leggeds in the county (of course, they do occur, occasionally, they have simply eluded my best efforts). But this winter I have seen them in SCHE on 4-5 separate occasions including 7 in a single day. Are others seeing more Rough-leggeds this winter, especially away from their usual haunts? My Bird Monitor (*) was working great last night! Every time I rolled over
(or something), I heard calls from migrating flocks, mostly of Geese. One time, it was a different call, which I thought might have been Loons, but I'm not really familiar with their migrational conversational habits. Since, having slept quite soundly, I was getting just spot samples, I must assume that the sky was full of fliers all night. And I'm not under any particularly heavily travelled flyway! (*) My "Bird Monitor" is a Fisher-Price baby monitor with the "baby" end stuck outside of one of my too-soundproof triple-glazed windows and the "noisy" end stuck on the bookshelf next to my sleeping ear zone.
