Red Crossbills at Madison Avenue Pinelands, with images from yesterday

scottjstoner

Folks, this is a great opportunity to view and photograph this irruptive species from fairly close range...they continue (as of yesterday afternoon) to frequent the area of Trailhead #7, the Madison Avenue Pinelands, of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, often heard from the end of the paved road (Madison Ave. Extension, which is a continuation of Washington Ave. Extension) in the City of Albany. The crossbills intermittently come down to drink at the large puddle at the end of the road, near the trailhead kiosk. Our ebird report from yesterday is below; the link includes some of Denise's images from yesterday. - Scott Stoner and Denise Hackert-Stoner, Loudonville NY

Hi all,

A Golden-crowned Kinglet just graced my back yard!  Some years I don't see one at all, but on April 2 at 2:45 p.m., just because I happened to be out filling feeders and looking in the right direction at the right moment?  WOW!  What a thrill!

Vischer Ferry Ducks

I checked out several of the ponds at Vischer Ferry Preserve this morning for ducks.  As usual most of them were in the pond west of the Whipple Bridge. I saw the following: Blue-winged Teal (5), Gadwall (3), American Wigeon (10), Ring-necked Duck (27), Wood Duck (14), Hooded Merganser (2).  I also had 7 Northern Rough-winged Swallows (FOY) and a Winter Wren (FOY).  I attached 2 photos below both taken in the small pond directly across the road from the main parking lot.

Fox Sparrows are moving through, heard two singing (saw one) near the tour road (now open), about 1 mile south of the office. Had one singing on the north end of Wrights Loop yesterday as well.

Other good birds on the tour road today have been Sapsucker and some new Cedar Waxwings.

Re: Chukars

There was one running around the Lark street area in downtown Albany a couple of years ago.

In non-exotic news, I had 34 species before AM this morning at five rivers.  Highlights were a male
Rusty Blackbird at the Skeeter Bowl, a FOY Field Sparrow by the Vlomankill Pavilion, and a singing Brown Creeper (Larch Lane).  Yesterday morning I had 30 species there, but the highlight was the pair of North American River Otters (see photo.)
