Hoary Redpoll behavior

My backyard common redpoll count rose to over 50 yesterday afternoon, but the continued Hoary Redpoll was easy to pick out due to its pure white rump, unmarked undertail coverts, and small bill. More so though was its behavior vs. the other birds. As the common redpolls flew back and forth for cover with any disturbance, the Hoary always remained, alone at times. She always fed on the ground and never on a feeder. She stayed alone in my deck side spruce and not with the other birds. She was also aggressive at times while feeding close to common redpolls. All interesting behavior being observed from my deck. Jeff Nadler

Short-eared Owl - Coxsackie Grasslands and other sightings

A neighbor sent me photos of a Short-eared Owl battling two Northern Harriers at the Coxsackie Grasslands in Greene County today. Also, there were 5 Bald Eagles perched in one backyard tree along the Hudson River in New Baltimore and a Belted Kingfisher in Coxsackie. And a Merling perched on a tree by the barn at the Scenic Hudson Longview Park on the River Road just south of the Hamlet of New Baltimore. The Mute Swan is spending its second winter at the Coeymans Landing Boat Launch site. Richard Guthrie

Chris and I had two belted kingfishers yesterday. One was hanging out in Collins Creek, near Collins Lake (Scotia); a great blue heron flew away from us in that same area. At least 150 crows flew overhead after being disturbed by a red-tailed hawk late in the morning in this general location. The other kingfisher was near Gateway Landing Park in Schenectady. A small area of open water had many mallards and common mergansers. At least 4 bluebirds were seen nearby. Cindy Edwardson

Waterfowl at Crescent Power Plant- 2/7
There was a fairly diverse group of ducks in the limited open water just downriver from the Crescent Power Plant this morning. Three male Redheads, first found by Rich W. yesterday, were still present. They were in loose company with a male Greater Scaup, a female Lesser Scaup, a male Ring-necked Duck, a female Hooded Merganser, and a female Red-breasted Merganser. Also present were larger numbers of Common Mergansers, Common Goldeneyes, Am. Black Ducks, and Mallards. Also notable were five Wild Turkeys at the top of the hillside on the landfill across the road. A gull flock was loafing of the ice shelf above the power plant, but a scan didn't reveal anything beyond Herring and Greater Black-backed Gulls.

Four winter finch species at home today.

The most incredible winter finch irruption at home today . . . 12 female pine grosbeaks, 20 pine siskin, 30 common redpoll, and a stunning hoary redpoll offering all of the positive identification traits. Just an amazing experience having four of the eight winter finches in one morning in the yard.

Hi Scott.... Love your plethora of winter finches.
Lack of eagle on the Battenkill may be the result of ice. (It may be, but we have learned to be careful trying to look inside the motives of eagles.)
Many of the flyway's winter eagles are down here (there was 100 in just a 20-mile reach of the lower Hudson River today).
Climate Change has given us relatively mild winters and during those wintering eagles need not travel so far to find consistently open water.

I came home from work today and in the lower level of deciduous trees along my driveway, I found a group of Red Crossbills flitting between these trees and 2 very tall Eastern White Pine trees. The group of birds made their presence known with continuous vocalizations for about 6 minutes. So nice to be able to list them as a "Yard Bird". Pine Bush winter finches

I stopped at the Albany Pine Bush this afternoon looking for crossbills and was not disappointed. There was a nice group of Red Crossbills hanging around the Madison Ave trailhead calling and giving good looks. I also heard, and briefly saw, a flock of 6-8 finches at Blueberry Hill East, beyond the first fork in the trail. Some were overhead and then they assembled in the upper parts of some bare trees before they flew off. The calls sounded like Common Redpolls or maybe White-winged Crossbills. I attached two short recordings - wind noise is loud in the second one. I'm curious what others think. Craig Driggs

Bluebird sp
This bird was seen today near the Rensselaer Tech park trail near Regeneron about 50 ft in. My friend said it was only white and blue with no brown or rust color.
If anyone would like to go see if it is more than an Eastern bluebird, that would be great! Let me know if you see anything great! I probably won't make it over there until Saturday. Edit: I think it was just an eastern. Despite asking about the colors, I forgot to as if my friend actually saw the front of the bird. I apologize to those who may have gone looking for a Mountain Bluebird. I hope if you did you saw something nice.
