Re: Pheasant

Well look what I found, this link shows that the pheasants are released in the Washington County State Forest, which I presume to be that trail on Blackhouse Rd as our hotspot holds that same name, for youth hunts: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9349.html

I swear there used to be a release further up on Rt 41 in Kingsbury/Smith's Basin ages ago as well but that was word-of-mouth.

I checked this morning and didn't see the bird, but it was early in the day and there was a lot of traffic, so i couldn't stop and was birding at 55 mph.

Today I found 9 Common Redpolls in a birch with great views at the Committal Service Shelter #2 at the Saratoga National Cemetery, including some nice rosy males.

Earlier I walked the trail from the center of Round Lake, north to Rte 9 and found a few Redpolls, a flyover Red Crossbills, and 3 noisy White-winged Crossbills who were at the top of mature pines on Goldfoot Rd, close to its intersection with the bike trail.

Short-eared owls

Saw at least 9 short-eared owls around 4:45 this afternoon on Plum Rd in Fort Edward, north of the farm theater. They were north of the rise just past the theater and easily visible, calling and flying all around. Others saw even more, 16, about 10 minutes earlier.

I saw a very similar Canada Goose on Columbia Co. Rt. 21 on a cornfield west of Kinderhook yesterday, about 4-4:30 pm. Has extra white on the face but is a good-sized C. Goose.

For what it's worth, Barnacle Geese are much smaller than Canada Geese - only slightly larger than a Cackling Goose - and their bodies are a frosty gray - especially on the back - not brown.

I was able to locate a shrike on Fitzpatrick dr; I presume the same one reported here in ebird several days ago. it was on the west side of the road just a few hundred yards from the blackhouse intersection, between the first two houses. it gave a brief view on an exposed perch and then dove out of sight. trying again now to relocate, but nothing yet.

Goose

Steve Mesick

So looking at the pictures I’m thinking this is just a leicistic Canada goose. The pictures are on ebird now but right now the back doesn’t look right for a Barnacle havingseen the pictures on my computer. It is it in under goose species at present. Would welcome opinions.

Barnacle goose?

Steve Mesick

I believe I might have a Barnacle Goose at Staats Island Road in the large flock to the north of the road. I’m going home to put my pictures in because I can’t put them in the field but if anyone’s close by they might wanna go check it out. Feel free to call me for details - 5188590973

Short-eared Owls, Fort Edward grasslands

Tom Anderson reports nine, possibly ten SEOWs flying over the Plum Road fields at 2:35. Good viewing from the Little Theater parking lot.
He also had two Lapland Longspurs perched in a small tree on Stonebridge Rd an hour ago.

Good birding!
