Deer Mountain Road and Nature Trail, Coeymans
Colleen and I visited Deer Mountain Nature Trail in Coeymans around mid-morning. The roadside into the parking area turned out to have the most bird activity and song. On the way in we heard and saw Worm-eating and Blackburnian Warblers. On the west trail at Deer Mountain, we heard Louisiana Waterthrush (which always seems odd as the habitat is a wooded swamp without fast-moving water) and found a juvenile Barred Owl exchanging calls with a more distant parent. On the road out, we heard or saw Red-eyed Vireo, Nashville Warblers and Black-throated Green Warblers. There hasn't been a big push of migrants yet but individuals are finding their way back to breeding locations. I've attached a couple of images of the Worm-eating Warbler and the owl.

Cape May Warblers, Selkirk
John Kent
In a year when most warblers seem to be arriving behind schedule, I was surprised to see Cape May Warblers in two places in Selkirk this afternoon. It’s a bit on the early side for them. Both were brilliant males. Other FOY birds for me today were Chimney Swift and American Redstart. Yellow-rumped Warblers are still abundant. I also saw eight Blue-gray Gnatcatchers this afternoon, they seem to be everywhere.

Carter's Lake was a whole new world of birds today. The lake was very quiet with scarce birds...but the woods were alive with sound. New migrants included Spotted Sandpiper, Great-crested Flycatcher, Baltimore Oriole, Swamp Sparrow, and Yellow Warbler. Such a nice change of color! Scott Varney Salem, NY

Vischer Ferry Arrivals
jhershey2
I had a pretty good morning at Vischer Ferry Preserve walking the 3.5 mile loop and looking for new arrivals. I had 6 FOY species: Eastern Kingbird, Cedar Waxwing, Yellow-throated Vireo, Common Yellowthroat, Nashville Warbler, and Baltimore Oriole. I walked part of the way with Naomi K. who was looking for Northern Waterthrush. We didn't hear any but after she left I heard two, one in the woods in the back and one right at the Whipple Bridge as I was leaving. (As is often the case, I didn't see them). Other new migrant species that I found this morning and on previous days: Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Yellow Warbler, Gray Catbird, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Warbling Vireo.

at least 4 whip-poor-wills heard last evening (5/3) in the area near the rocket way & luther forest blvd circle. birds were generally doing short bursts of calling and seemed to give up rather early. Also heard several woodcock peenting and doing their display flights in the same area.
