eBird Report - Saratoga Lake, Dec 14, 2017

Ronald Harrower

Morning part of Saratoga CBC sector B.

Saratoga Lake, Saratoga, New York, US
Dec 14, 2017 6:35 AM - 11:00 AM
Protocol: Traveling
18.6 mile(s)
Comments: Naomi and I took up the Saratoga Lake (and area to west) sector of the Saratoga CBC. Weather was 11- 22 degrees with moderate wind. Snow flurries in early morning gave way to clearing and plentiful sun by late morning. As I write this report the day after, I realize what a good thing it was that we did the count on the 14th as surface has frozen considerably more and most waterfowl mentioned in this report had gone.
40 species (+3 other taxa)

Snow Goose 2
Canada Goose 1490
Mallard 429
American Black Duck 41
Redhead 2 Mixed in with predominantly scaup raft near East shore, just south of Snake Hill
Ring-necked Duck 6 Probably more, but had limited vantage point at sailing club, suspect that they are from huge raft that has been at nearby Loughberry Lake for 2 months
Greater Scaup 35 In mixed raft on shore just south of Snake Hill. I believe that these ducks are same group that was in much larger raft of Ring-necked Ducks that were on Loughberry Lake until frozen out two-three days ago
Lesser Scaup 80 In mixed raft on shore just south of Snake Hill. I believe that these ducks are same group that was in much larger raft of Ring-necked Ducks that were on Loughberry Lake until frozen out two-three days ago
Greater/Lesser Scaup 35
scoter sp. 8 Way out from Riley cove toward Snake Hill. Shimmer made it hard to identify further than scoter sp.
Long-tailed Duck 2
Bufflehead 57
Common Goldeneye 251
Common Merganser 262
Common Merganser (North American) 115
Red-breasted Merganser 5 Drake and 2 females in large raft of Goldeneyes and Hooded Mergansers off Manning Cove. 2 females off Brown's Beach
Common Loon 2
Northern Harrier 1 Flying over lake by Riley Cove
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Chasing Mourning Dove right down Riley Cove Rd in front of us.
Bald Eagle 2
Red-tailed Hawk 4
Ring-billed Gull 69
Herring Gull 4
Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon) 45
Mourning Dove 5 including the one that escaped Sharp-shinned Hawk
Great Horned Owl 1 Silver Beach Rd
Red-bellied Woodpecker 3
Downy Woodpecker 2
Hairy Woodpecker 3
Peregrine Falcon 1
Blue Jay 16
American Crow 48
Black-capped Chickadee 9
Tufted Titmouse 3
White-breasted Nuthatch 2
Eastern Bluebird 8
American Robin 1
American Tree Sparrow 2
Dark-eyed Junco 14
White-throated Sparrow 2
Northern Cardinal 9
American Goldfinch 2
House Sparrow 10

Rough-legged Hawk in FE Grasslands

Scott Varney

On a quest to find a reported Snowy Owl on Grange Hall Rd in Schuylerville, I extended my search all the way to Fort Edward Grasslands, but came up empty on any owl species. However, I did get 6 Horned Larks on Purinton Road and 1 light morph Rough-legged Hawk on Swamp Road next to the horse track. Im pretty sure a snowy will be reported quite soon here!

Happy Birding Holidays to all,

As an aside, I have 2 Great Horned owls in the back woods. They've been hanging out atop the tree that is just at the fence line. Love seeing and hearing them.
