Single nighthawk Averill Park

Brian Smith

Saw a single nighthawk last night before nightfall. I've been looking for them lately, but haven't seen them. When I saw the single individual, I went into an open area and watched for about a half hour, until it got dark, without seeing any.

Wilson's Warbler - Swamp Rd.

jhershey2

I spent about 90 minutes this morning walking on Swamp Rd. in the Town of Saratoga looking mostly for butterflies.  I saw only 2 vehicles (pick-up trucks) on the road during this time.  Both drivers were friendly and stopped to talk.  The one gentleman generously allowed me to walk along the stream on his property where I found a beautiful Cardinal Flower (my first).  I just read that Cardinal Flowers are mostly pollinated by Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in the east.

Afterwards I discovered a Wilson's Warbler in the brush along the road.  Songbird migration is definitely in progress.  Other birds along the road that I remember include 2 Green Herons, 1 Great Blue Heron, Gray Catbird, American Goldfinch, Cedar Waxwing.  I posted a photo of the Wilson's Warbler for i.d. purposes and one of the Cardinal Flower on this yahoo group site.

Shorebird habitat

rob snell

After reading a number of reports expressing disappointment with potential shorebird habitat in the area, I went to google maps. I located and visited expansive tidal mudflats over two days to the east of Schodack Island State Park. At low tide on Wednesday from Rt 9J just south of the I90 overpass there are expansive tidal mudflats (Probably 1 square mile). Access is difficult due to Amtrak (which I was asked to leave), but the area looks primo for shorebirds, and I had not seen any reports from the area on eBird. I did see a reasonably sized flock of medium sized shorebirds (10-30), at a distance, but they were too far away to id without a scope. On Thursday I hiked to a blind that overlooks the flats from the State Park. Tide was rising, but flats were still substantially exposed. Only saw a flock of about 20+ semipalmated sandpipers. I submitted a checklist.

Has anyone else visited this site with success?

Thanks.

Rob Snell

Rich Guthrie emailed emailed me that a Red-necked Grebe has been reported in the Stockport Creek so I am deleting the Horned Grebe from my report. I will try to re-find this grebe and get another look.

Tomorrow's destination, 8/24

Naomi Lloyd

Bill is having some computer issues, so he asked me to let you all know that tomorrow's meeting place will be at Clark Street off Ontario in Cohoes, behind the UHaul lot, at 8:00am. There has been some ongoing work to repair the access walk down to the Flats. So if we get there and they're working, we'll move over to the parking lot for Falls View Park. Scopes and waterproof footgear are recommended!

See you there --

Naomi

Counting Common Nighthawks- 8/22

trwdsd

Four birders braved threatening skies on Tuesday evening, looking for migrating nighthawks ahead of the approaching storms. We counted only six, as individuals and two group of two. The best bird swooped in at 7:55pm below tree top level, coursed around the parking lot area just off the ground, and left after a minute in the fading light. We will observe again tomorrow beginning at 6:00pm at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center on New Karner Rd. (Rt. 155) in Albany. Bring a chair and binoculars. The Preserve is hosting their annual "Drop-in Nighthawk Watch" program at 5:30pm, so expect a good group of skywatchers.

Tuesday AM shorebird report

zach schwartz-weinstein

At Cohoes Flats, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs and at least 1 killdeer.  They're doing more work on the path, this time with bigger rocks.

At Falls View, no shorebirds but plenty of habitat.
