Hudson Crossing bird activity
Scott Varney
I promised my dog a little walk today, so I headed over to Hudson Crossing...I gotta get something out of this promise too! Birds were extremely vocal along the upper canal path and I was excited to get 3 warbler species and 3 vireo species...all with great looks. I was hoping for some hummingbirds to photo but they had different plans today. A beautiful sunny day!

Tomorrow's destination, 7/27
Naomi Lloyd
Hi folks!
I suggest tomorrow we meet and explore a spot that's probably new to most of us - the Stillwater Schools Nature Trail. It has an expansive open marsh on one side of the path, more water on the other, and woodlands between the wetland and the Hudson. Rather like a smaller Vischer Ferry. When I was there a few days ago the bugs were not too troublesome in the woods. Recent visitors there have heard and seen Least Bittern, including one feeding young. From there we could go on to the Battlefield. Wright's Loop has been unproductive lately, overgrown and drying up. Turn off Rt 4 in Stillwater at the road to the school complex, and drive to the end. The trail starts at a chainlink gate. See you there at 8am! https://www.google.com/maps/search/stillwat+er+schools/@42.9481663,-73.6386236,778m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en&authuser=0 Naomi

Hi, That's a juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron, distinguishable from Yellow-Crowned by the size of the spots and extent of yellow on the bill. A good find for Albany County. Presumably this is the same bird Curt Morgan reported earlier. Best ZSW

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1sCqdxDiVifwVP1aGImY1AYL-YyY3XvOywQ These aren't the best photos - but he had a bright yellow beak and orange eyes. We watched him fish for an hour or so Sunday afternoon, right down by the pavilion. Is there enough there to say what kind of heron-- or ??. There was also a pair of cormorants thinning the goldfish 'herd' at the other end of the lake. Thanks, Jim

Re: Least Bittern and Barred Owls -- stillwater elementary school trail

We all have Lindsey Duval to thank for finding this special spot. I wish I lived closer because I think this will prove to be a very productive birding place.

Cathy Graichen and I took a walk down there this evening for about an hour. We had glimpses of 2 least bitterns -- one briefly flying across the open marsh, and then one flying out of the marsh on the north side and crossing the trail to the heavier vegetation on the south side. Also of note were a green heron, and many E. pheobes and E. kingbirds. remarkable that we had no idea this trail and marsh area existed. It has the look of a compact version of vischer ferry, with nice forest between the marsh and the river. Look like a good place to check out during migration. gregg recer malta

Least Bittern and Barred Owls
Susan
Thanks to Mona B., I went to the nature trail behind Stillwater Elementary, which is located off of Rt 4, in search of Least Bitterns. I was unsuccessful on my way out, but on my return, with the entrance gate visible, one flew past me headed towards the school. It veered north and landed on the edge of the pond. While I could no longer see it, it began calling and I could still hear it when I reached my car. I was very surprised to learn of the existence of this trail, as it's in my district and certainly wasn't there when my kids went to school. It's lovely. The large pond area to the north is filled with water lilies, small shrubs, large dead trees and the expected bird species. The wetland continues on the south side, but is not as open. The wide trail continues to the Hudson where it then turns left and follows the river through a deciduous forest. I didn't go to the end. Last night around dusk I could hear the high pitched, raspy sound of Barred Owlets in my yard. When I went out it seemed like there were owls flying everywhere. There were at least four and at least two of them were immature. I had good looks as they were perched rather low. They still had some downy feathers on their shoulders, but otherwise looked like adults. I got to watch as a parent delivered dinner of a vole or mole to one of the young while the other continued screeching - very cool!
