Another week, another problem. I've whacked my knee up again, so I won't be doing any walking for a few days. If anyone else wants to take over, feel free. :-(

He tried to convince me he was shooting and shot would come down on my car while i was on the road. I said it wouldn't be the first time. He said he didn't like people parking on the road.

Black-billed Cuckoos, Old Chatham

Naomi Lloyd

I birded the Wilson Powell Sanctuary today with the Alan Devoe bird club. Things were as quiet as one might expect in mid-July, with the day's highlight being two Black-billed Cuckoos calling and moving around through the trees. I tallied 45 species (missed a few) including Blue-winged, Pine, and Chestnut-sided Warblers, Savannah Sparrows, and a flyover pair of Green Herons.

If you've never been there, the Sanctuary is on the south side of Hunt Club Rd. The extensive field across the road are owned by Little Brook Farm, and are open for public use. The landowner has mowed a system of trails to expose spectacular vistas across the Hudson Valley. It's well worth a walk through.

The water level is still high at Cohoes Flats with little exposed rock. A few Spotted Sandpipers and a Least/Semipalm foraged on the spillway and a family of three Ospreys are hanging out there too.

Hi birders!

I won't have a car tomorrow, so there's no "official" trip this week - plus the weather doesn't sound good. See you next week -

Five Rivers: Round up the usual suspects

Naomi Lloyd

For lack of anywhere more exciting, the Thursday birders went to Five Rivers today where we saw the expected birds. A few Prairie Warblers and Field Sparrows still sang, and a persistent trill heard on the Big Pine Trail was probably a Pine Warbler. American Goldfinches gathered thistle fluff to fill their nests and other species were seen carrying food to hidden spots. Even the indefatigable Red-eyed Vireos are starting to go quiet.

Only a few weeks til shorebird migration!
